Dragon Seafood Restaurant is a popular destination for seafood about 15 minutes away from Miri. I went there with with a couple of friends to check out the famous seafood restaurant in Miri. There is a huge neon sign at the eating establishment, prominently located beside the road, so you won’t miss it.

The actual restaurant itself is about 100 meters into the turning. The proprietor had the audacity to call it Dragon Seafood Paradise. πŸ˜‰ It’s surrounded by palm trees and the structure is made of timber products which makes it very inviting. There was a bit of a cool breeze when we went there that night too.

This is the signature aquariums popular in seafood establishments where the marine life is kept alive until the customer picks one. The chef then uses a net to haul the one you want before it’s cooked straight in the kitchen. There are various fishes, mussels, oysters, clams, crabs, lobsters and prawns on offer at Dragon Seafood Restaurant.

The interior of Dragon consists of a large hall dining area which can easily accommodate 300 people. There is no air conditioning at the restaurant, but ample fans bring down the temperature and the breeze coming in from the sea cools the place down significantly. There’s a lovely beach view due to the locality of the establishment too.

Dragon Seafood Restaurant also has several private dining alcoves which contains a single table and a wooden walkway leading to the hut. I noticed that this is one of the more popular options – probably coz the people wouldn’t want to mix with the proles at the hall dining area. πŸ˜‰ There are wooden Venetian blinds on all sides of the wooden huts for additional privacy.

This is our waitress of the day. She recommended a couple of their signature dishes and was kind enough to pose for a photo for the blog. I was a little surprised when she mentioned that she blogs too (in Chinese). Interesting..

I think that seafood is best paired with beer (or stout) and I ordered Danish Royal Stout Ginseng which is manufactured under the Carlsberg group. Carlsberg sponsored the neon billboard of Dragon Seafood Restaurant – it’s in the first photo. This stout is rich and goes well with seafood. The addition of ginseng is a great idea as it contributes to the rich flavor of the stout.

The first dish that came out was the Dragon Garlic Rice with Seafood. It’s customary for Chinese restaurants to divide the dish on another table into smaller bowls before serving it. This only applies to soup and rice though. The remaining rice is left at the center of the table for second helpings.

The Dragon Garlic Rice with Seafood tastes good. This is one of their flagship dishes that the waitress recommended in place of plain steamed rice. There are bits of seafood inside the rice and the garlic rice is done just right – perceptible, but not overpowering. It’ll still wreck all sorts of havoc with your breath though. This dish would give you some serious halitosis problems but it tastes great! πŸ˜‰

The next dish was the Seafood Soup. It was also divided on the adjescent table and divided into four (4) equal servings before the bowls were passed to us.

The Seafood Soup had clams, abalone and fish pieces. It’s more like a broth – the liquid is clear and infused with flavors from the seafood ingredients.

This is a clam dish cooked with a variety of herbs and spices. The clams are huge and different from the ones we get over here. It’s surprisingly tender and juicy too. The best thing about the clams is that it’s fresh, unlike the ones we get over in Sibu which tend to have a bit of an odor associated with it.

The next dish is Faye’s favorite seafood order – prawns steamed with eggs. The implementation at Dragon Seafood Restaurant is nice and the presentation is better than the regular restaurants. The prawns were tender enough to be eaten wholesale together with the shell. Well, at least that’s how I eat it, but then again, I’ve been told I have a cast iron stomach. πŸ˜‰

The final dish was butter crabs. The crabs we eat over here tend to be cooked with eggs or chilli but there is now an increasing trend of ordering butter crabs. The crabs are deep fried with butter to create fluffy buttery pieces. I love this dish, and I could also eat the shell (except for the huge ones) which surprised my dining companions.

pecializes in seafood. The seafood is fresh and the service is attentive. It can be a little far from Miri town but it’s worth the drive.

  1. You forget the mention the price for each food. I been to one of these restaurant but different one I think, its a branch from KK where variety of rare seafood is being served. Not bad even a chinese blogger also know you, you are bloody famous hor ;p

  2. Since the owner change, i never been there again. It used to be very very expensive, how much was your meal tat nite?
    Anyway, u should try ulumulu. A new restaurant with a great ambient ,err, no aircon but fresh sea breeze at marina bay.
    But its quite pricey also.. πŸ™‚

  3. The Prawns look amazing, I like the presentation, and without a doubt, the CRAB taste so good. I’ve gotta gulp down a mouthful of saliva when visiting ur blog. U gotta bring me around for FOOD and its ur treat! Hehe!

    I have read all the post on the “new” sixthseal, and I noticed something is missing from your blog, as i recall, you used to put up reviews on alcoholic products as well as tabacco products, being a Marlboro smoker myself and an occasional drinker, I would like to know whats new in the market and how it fared amongst the public, I’m also sure that many of your readers would like some valuble information before indulging in the products themselves. I, myself had tried a few of your recommended products last time, and I must say, I generally agreed with what you thought about them.
    So, all these while, I trusted your choice and I look forward to the days where you reviewed new products which are out in the market. Thanks and welcome back.

    As a mirian i also never dine at this seafood restaurant because it was famous with the price….last time it used to be Ocean(a branch from KK)like someone commented.

  9. Something different for me on the way they cooked some of the dishes. Guess I have been away from Malaysia for too long. (Not counting the 5 months I goyang kaki.) LOL
    HB, next time ask the chef to cook salty egg crab. I had one in Johor, pretty nice.

  11. Roland: I didn’t have the receipt with me – KJ paid for the food since he wanted to treat us to this place. Anyway, she didn’t know me, and I know she doesn’t read the blog, she just has come across my blog at some point and recognized me. It’s strange huh, English bloggers don’t read Chinese blogs and vice versa. Language barrier.
    goolooloo: It was quite expensive. It was around RM 500 for the four of us. Faye wanted to go to this place so KJ brought her there. It’s supposed to be famous for the delicious seafood and the extravagent prices they charge.
    I went to ulumulu with Kim, Mark and Darren the next day. πŸ™‚
    Is that what it’s called? The sign beside it says Marina Bay Seafood Restaurant. There’s no signage with ulumulu anyplace at that restaurant.

    There’s always a first time for everything. Well, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant despite the food (which is good) since the price is really astronomical. It’s famous for being expensive.
    fish fish: Salty egg crab? Hmm…never had that before but it sounds good. I’ll try it the next time I eat crabs. They’re about RM 18 per kg over here (cooked) at this restaurant that specializes in crabs. Bring you there if you come to Sibu.
    Faye is a big fan of young shrimp. πŸ˜‰

  13. how did you turn out like this? this is ment in the best way, as i was one of the people who never really doubted you. you didn’t go mad, look healthy, quit a 7 year benzodiazepine habit, and have a successful job. the fact you carry on writing an interesting blog means you seem to be your old self. well done.

  15. fish fish: Hmm…good or bad, it’s all relative. πŸ˜‰
    I’m not certain myself what kind of influence she is…but the mature woman part is true. It’s said that women reach their sexual peak in their 30’s. I noticed that it seems to be true. πŸ˜‰
    jessy: There’s this local fish we have over here called empulau that goes for RM 2,000 per fish – and it’s not a big fish, probably a size of a medium cod. The flesh is tender and there’s not a lot of bones though. Very popular with fish afficionados.
    William: The most important issue with me was my benzodiazepine problem. Rehab took care of that cold turkey. I still like benzos but the problem with benzos is that they fuck up your short term memory so you never really “learn” important things and that snowballs into a life of excess and decadence. I still have very occasional cravings for opiates but NONE for methamphetamine anymore, since meth really messed up my life, my liver, my kidneys and I think lowered my IQ by at least 100 points. πŸ˜‰
    Anyway, I look healthy but I’m actually not. I’ll show you my full medical report – will post it up. Blood work shows deformed white and red blood cells and other damage. Liver and kidney function tests are seriously messed up. Extremally high cholestrol and hypertension (but the last two are genetic, not drug related).
    The most important thing is to reintegrate yourself into society, get a bunch of non-user friends and get back to a normal life with a normal job. πŸ™‚
    Hope this helps, my friend. Do try it if you’re trying to get out, I would recommend rehab first (perhaps investing in a 28 day program cold turkey).
    bbface: Nope, we didn’t eat lobster. I think the crabs and the clams were the more expensive items. You should check it out and see how much they charge locals since they don’t list the prices in the menu. Don’t eat lobster though, that would set you back at least RM 200 each for each person. πŸ˜‰

  16. You didn’t eat lobster!!!!! How come those five dishes cost you until RM500. Unbelieveable!!!!!! i just been to dragon seafood too on the 9th june,2008. I still can remember some of the price like the crabs, a kg is Rm30.i like to eat crabs too but i like the crabs cook with the wet butter. It taste nice and yummy. For the clam which you say is cook with the spicy and herb, the captain says that there is no herb inside o.. i think what you mean is cook with the curry powder and curry leafs and bla bla bla…i like the small clam, i think per kg is RM20. For the calm with the soup, the captain over there says is a herb soup, there is no abalone or fish pieces inside ler?????? Those clam per kg is RM25.I like the prawns which with just only boiled . that half kg is RM35.I think you have given everbody wrong information.because when i ask the captain and tell him the cooking that u had mention some, they say don have. And yet there are seven of us eating le.But the price only cost us around Rm350.
