Hash run @ The road in the middle of nowhere

road to nowhere

I went to a hash run at 4 pm yesterday to get my mind off things and to do some Healthy Stuff (TM). The HHH (Hash House Harriers) are a group of hardcore runners who loves to go trailblazing based on the concept of a paper chase.

intro

It’s not the paper chase you’re familiar with and definitely not what African American rappers mean when they say “outlaws on a paper chase, can you relate” or “Cash Rules Everything Around Me, CREAM, get the money, dollar dollar bills, yo”. This is a traditional paper chase with a “hare” dropping shredded paper as a trail and the rest of us “harriers” following the trail.

To do this, you need:

trainers

Running shoes (or just trainers)

sunblock

Sunblock (which I later found out was a Bad Idea (TM))

trail

The trail goes through hilly terrain and some intimidating foliage. Steep inclines and sharp descents were not uncommon and I was told that this was one of the easier trails.

descent

It wasn’t sunny enough for the sunblock to be really necessary, and after a while, you realize why it’s a Bad Idea (TM) – the sweat dripping from your brows gets mixed with the sunblock and starts stinging your eyes.

paper trail

The group soon separated into a less orderly fashion and the paper trails was all that is left for the harriers. There were constant calls of “On On” – a HHH tradition and a sweeper at the back to collect the paper trail.

bamboo

There were bamboo trees that looked like a scene from a Chinese wu xia (martial arts) movie…

pitcher plant

…and even miniature pitcher plants!

vistas

Stunning vistas marked the end of the trail. It was indeed invigorating to go on the run. I managed to make pretty good time despite being relatively unfit.

bushed

I must admit that I was totally bushed when I got out though. Heh!

chiller

The Sibu HHH were experienced enough to bring a chiller with plenty of bottled water and isotonic drinks…

watermelon

…and watermelon!

watermelon eat

Nothing beats a cold, juice slice of watermelon after some exertion. Mmm…

sandwiches

Sandwiches were also available for those who want a bite to eat.

However, one question still bugs me though…

sibu hhh

…what happened to “The drinking club with a running problem”?

Amber fluid, amber fluid, where art thou? ;)

  1. Running does not relax me, and the only time im running is when I about to miss a bus. Heh, your run must have seemed peaceful, being in the nature and what not. The setting reminds me of Tarzan.

  2. Hi HB,
It’s been a while since I last read your post. I just gone through a rough patch and now trying to put things back in perspective and carry on with life.
I did read about your write-up by Nicole in The Star yesterday morning and I thought it took a brave & determined person like you to share your past. Your HR or your company should be proud of you instead of worrying about the negative publicity or consequences. We are only human and we all make mistakes in some points of our life. We should be given a chance to make things right.
While I was in Kuching for a short stint, I also joined a couple of Kuching hash house to keep myself occupied. It was really an amazing experience and I particularly enjoyed the untouched beauty of the nature. Trust you had a good time and will continue to do more and share with us those beautiful scenery.
    Cheers mate!

  3. What? No Heineken? I know some HHHs elsewhere, after the run, head straight for the pub and booze away! Wah! Sunblock, eh? Must take care of ur smooth, fair and glowing complexion hor? LOL!!!

  4. Wow…how was the feeling about the activity?
I bet you gained a lot of fun and experiences right? but how come your face become so red? I’m like that when I’m drink some alcohol or liquor… Lol.

  5. Rufus: I went swimming just now for a change and it does relax me. Endorphines and all that. Runner’s high. I did 3 km in the swimming pool just now which was a bit of an overkill. Boy, am I going to be sore tomorrow.
Anak Pak Lah: Thanks for the support, my friend. I will survive. I hope that everything is okay on your side too. Take care!
suituapui: Ya lor, next time I ask Heineken to sponsor HHH events. ;)
Yeah, gotta take care of my most important asset, right? Haha!
nkwai: It’s a fun thing to be doing actually. I went swimming just now, caught the exercise bug.
I get VERY red when I exercise, thus the photo with the watermelon. I forgot to add the witty reference to the similarity between the colors. :)

  6. I just read about the Sibu HHH this morning in one of the Chinese Newspaper. I heard about HHH and I tot it mostly join by rich and pension ppl. Oh yes… the last time got one group of them (mostly ang mohs), after their activities, due to too much booze, they all went naked. A tazi driver in KL told me that story.

  7. hey, glad that you’re doing something (healthy) to keep your mind off things. maybe you should go on a holiday or smtg ;p i’m currently in kedah which is not a good place to travel but it’s only 2 hours bus ride to penang. so if u’re thinking to relax your mind and go for holiday ( of which i suggested penang ), i would love to bring you around :)

  8. Dude, I remember HHH running Ang moh during my primary school days…before the days of paper shredded, the “paper chase” was bigger, the mainframe computer program punch card ( you computer geek know what I am talking about). Me and the boys used to pick the paper up and fuck with them.
Exactly, not beer ? L.A. Hush even set up a beer booth at mile 20th during a full marathon
Speaking of which, HB, if you run and complete a Full 26.2mile/40km K.L/Penang/SG/Saeberkas marathon, I’ll send you RM100, are you up to the challenge like Kenny did ?

  9. Dude, wtf, if you complete a 26.2 mile full marathon, I’ll send you USD 100. You can train for a few months that takes dedication and will power or you can finish a marathon without training like I did this year.

  10. Yippiee!! My fav blogger is back!
HB, we miss u dude so very very much… u’re our blogger idol, seriously and it was too sad to find one day that you’re no longer running 6thseal. Then one day, that is today, this morning I saw u in Nuffnang. Thanks to Lord who brought us back our HB. May You always guide him and lead him to Your right path. Amen.
It’s good to have you back HB. *wink.

“The lady who saw you at Star Cineplex last year but didn’t dare to say Hi to you. LOL”

  11. Wow,
Next time you should try joining the Miri’s HHH. They do serve beer after the run. Normally after the run they will organize a gathering or dinner at any chosen restaurant or coffeshop… Its a lot of fun… U might want to try it out with the Miri HHH someday… Take Care….

  12. Choonie: Yeah, I’ve always thought of the HHH as having a reputation of knowing how to Party Hearty (TM). I guess it varies chapter by chapter. It’s a little more family oriented here.
Secret Admire: I just went swimming again. No more beer, I promise. :p
melanie: Yeah, I should be away this weekend. :)
I’ll know who to call when I go to Penang. You can be my official tour guide. ;)
e: There’s one in KK coming up end of the year. I’ll be participating. :)
I shall collect that USD 100. Muahahaha!
    Full marathon!
Cokelatrawkz: OMG! It’s so good to see you here! I’m so glad the old readers are coming back. :)
I remember your nick from ages ago.
BTW, which Star Cineplex? Kuching or Sibu? Last year? Which month?
Anyway, thanks for the support, my dear! :)
Bubble7866: Hmm…I would be up to it if I were in Miri. HHH seems like a fun concept…WITH the beer after the run. I read that it’s one of the tenets is to get rid of the excesses of the previous weekend. Interesting history, the harriers.
julian: Cheers! Like Chinese kung fu flick like that. ;)

  13. Wahh…. ‘old readers’ make me feel like from Chey Chey to Tai Tai liao.hahahahahah…
ages ago huh? Wah.. some1 actually is remembering me, ohh that is so sweet. well, i saw u at Star Kuching. You were so sober, man. Funny though.

  14. Cokelatrawkz: Heh! Yeah, you were one of the third wave of readers. :)
Star Kuching eh…and sober somemore. Somehow I doubt it. I was drinking heavily then and on prescription meds. ;)
