Budget travel in Kuching

irene travel

I had to get something done in Kuching during the weekend and took a bus after work on Saturday (RM 40) and arrived late evening. The bus ticket costs RM 40 and it takes about 7 hours for the journey. Irene picked me up and we did the photo shoot in about an hour or so before heading for dinner.

transit point

I stayed at Transit Point, the latest competitor to the Singgahsana Lodge and it only cost RM 35 nett for a room with WiFi (!) and a queen sized bed. The Singgahsana Lodge on the other hand costs RM 30 nett for dormitory style accommodations sleeping 10 people in a room.

clubbing travel

Irene called me at around 11 pm and it was decided that we were to do some clubbing and meet up with some old friends since I was already here. I was a little dubious since I have to wake up at 6 am in the morning to take the 8:30 am express boat back to Sibu but I figured I haven’t gone clubbing in a while so I went for it.

travel heineken draft

I also drink Heineken draft during my regular sessions, not just for advertorials, okay. :p

irene drink

I was sitting at the bar with Irene and I suddenly had an ethanol inspired idea to pass my blogger name card to random people. Pimp my blog and all that. πŸ˜‰

michelle

I walked over to two girls beside to our left and passed out my name card to them, and one of them recognized my name. Michelle (pictured above) has read my blog before and was introduced to it by…

wendy

…Wendy! Thanks for reading! πŸ™‚

azza burger

We stayed until 2 am and went over to Azza Burger to eat the famous Azza Burger with everything inside (my favorite post drinking session meal when I was in Kuching). We also partook in the famous Chinese amber fluid (Tsingtao in cans) and I ended up sleeping at 4 am, which is a really bad idea when you have to wake up 2 hours later.

Snooze Alarms is an anagram for Alas! No more Z’s !

express back

I was supposed to wake up at 6 am but I overslept and woke up at 7:40 am, rushed to pack my bags and called a taxi to bring me to the wharf in Pending where the express boat departs at 8:30 am (RM 45). The express boat takes about 5 hours, which is a little faster than taking a bus. I made it in time and after a bit of expense tabulation:

Sibu – Kuching bus: RM 40
Accommodation: RM 35
Kuching – Sibu express boat: RM 45
Total: RM 120
(Price not inclusive of dinner and drinking session)

It is possible to travel on a budget if you don’t mind the long journeys by non-aviation means of transportation. You can always sleep on the bus/express boat and I arrived in Sibu at around 2 pm on Sunday. πŸ™‚

Total time spent in Kuching: Less than 12 hours.

  1. I think I met Irene at Ipanema that night. Is she a part-time whore? The way she holds the cigarette and the type of dress she wears… Speechless. Shouldn’t be called creativeBitch. Cheap bitch maybe…
Holding that kind of handbag somemore… Gosh! Must be full of condoms and KY gel. Ha ha.
Up to you whether to delete this comment or not, but I guess she doesn’t much care. Dare to do, dare to let people know.

  2. Dude, I love express boats, enjoyed the ride back in the days of Sarikei to Sibu, stopped at Binatang (at the time), tangerine selling vendor jumped on board. Loved it when two express boat crosses path, that is the only roller coasted experience available at the time.
Later , sea going express from Kuching to Sibu was even more trill, bigger craft, dolphins…I’d spend the 5 hr trip at the captain’s cabin or just stood outside the craft enjoying the sea breeze and salt water.
I believe I partied with Wendy once in Kuching many years ago (6 hrs after a funeral) she’s a sweet girl, No matter what people say, Irene is one sexy girl with nice pair of legs. You are living the good life, dog.

  3. LOL HB, you are truly business minded. Dont give away all. You promised me one premium quality punya.
12 hr is a bit too short considering 1/2 of it you went to a club and ate burger. πŸ˜›
I tried plane, boat even laoyar van to Sibu, but never bus yet.

  6. (=’.’=): It used to be just RM 25. The sea isn’t rough but it can be during monsoon season. There’s only one plying the Sibu – Kuching – Sibu route now though – Express Bahagia 2. Sea Jet 2 has suspended it’s operations.
goolooloo: Yeah, I was craving for a Slurpee so I went in search of one 400+ kms away.
    Very the keng, right? πŸ˜‰
Clare: I had to get someone to do some scouting first what. It would have been a waste of an entire weekend if I went down and the Slurpee I wanted wasn’t available. :p
Thanks for driving around Kuching in search of the elusive Slurpee. πŸ™‚
SOHO hunter: No, she’s a student and one of my good friends. I can assure you that the handbag contains just a cell phone, cigarettes, and a lighter. No KY jelly or condoms to be found there.
What’s your problem with her anyway? Irene is a really nice person.
Irene: Thanks for helping me out with everything! Cheers! Appreciate your hospitality. πŸ™‚
XOXOXO: Well, I have no problem with it. I wear what I want, and I don’t really care if people have a problem with it. Why all the animosity against Irene?
joe: Word, my friend. I second that statement. πŸ™‚
e: The vendors still comes on board during the various stops. They sell snacks nowadays though. I was sleeping during most of the voyage so I didn’t experience the roller coaster effect. It would have been fun.
Yeah, it’s fun to be on the upper deck where you can smoke (if you want to) and have the sea breeze blowing against you. Very relaxing.
Wendy is a really nice person too, met her at Ipanema. πŸ™‚
fish fish: I’m really on a very tight budget this month due to a couple of reasons which cannot be detailed on the blog.
Of course, this is the Sibu printed ones, I’ll definately give you at least one premium quality blogger name card. Reserved already. πŸ™‚
clementwpy: Yeah, I would prefer taking a plane too but I had to calculate the expenses for this trip since I didn’t go there for a vacation, just to do something.
Movable Type? It’s very straightfoward, just follow the instructions in the manual online.
Darren: Yeah! It has private rooms with a queen bed, and WiFi! The WiFi was the one that sold me, and RM 5 extra for WiFi and the privacy of your own room is something I would gladly pay. The place is clean and decent too. Photos up after I finish writing about KL trip stuff.
dreckker: Yeah, I was at Ipanema last Saturday. I nearly missed the express boat back to Sibu due to staying out too late. Heh!
Emeric…I believe he had some tequila and a Flaming Lambourgini. Oh, and beer too. Quite a few drinks.
Yeah, it’ll be great to meet up, I’ll email you when I go to Kuching again. Cheers!
M: Yeah, we get all sorts over here. Sorry mate.

  8. Do you have the website for Transit Point? Where is the location for this new accomodation? I am a regular customer to Singgahsana coz it is in the heart of the city.
    Thanks

  9. Cokelatrawkz: It’s Kuching. There’s lots of cats. πŸ˜‰
    Sorry, couldn’t resist. Heh!
Yeah, I had some stuff to do so I came over.
wendy: Hello Wendy! It was great to bump into you that day. πŸ™‚
Anyway, e is Eddie, he’s from Kuching as well but currently working in the US.
tze: Hmm…I don’t even know if they have a website. The place is located opposite that Chinese primary school at the hilly place before going into town. It’s quite near Ting & Ting and the neon lok lok place is Kuching.
Sorry, my directions are a bit vague coz I don’t really know the road name or how to describe it. I no sense of direction one.
It’s closer to Shan curry and such than Singgahsana (to give you a sense of direction) and still in the middle of the city. RM 5 more for WiFi and a private room (and free usage of towels) compared to Singgahsana.
