Restoran Ikan Bakar Fend

ikan bakar fend

Restauran Ikan Bakar Fend is a very popular ikan bakar (BBQ fish) place at SS6 in Petaling Jaya. It’s my second time there – it’s always packed with the lunchtime crowd but for some strange reason the planets aligned and our entire floor in the office converged at the place at 12:30 pm, taking up approximately 8 tables.

The place has a very simple setup – the BBQ pit is located outside and churns out an impressive array of stingray, various fishes and assorted marine life for the rapid clientele turnover.

ikan bakar interior

Restauran Ikan Bakar Fend works on a trust system – you pick and choose what you want. You recite what you ate at the counter after the meal and they charge you accordingly. The place is remarkably clean for such a messy meal.

ikan bakar ulam

The place also serves ulam for a touch of authenticity.

ikan bakar mine

The meal comes in a set – there’s steamed rice and two sauces and you pick the type of fish you want to add on to it. I had ikan kembung (some kind of local fish) and ikan pari (stingray) as well as two different types of ulam.

ikan bakar ttl

TTL shows us how ulam is meant to be eaten. There are no complicated rituals or arcane incantations, just some dexterous finger action.

ulam folded

The stalk of the vegetable is supposed to be twisted and folded into a compact and neat bite-sized structure.

ulam dip

It is then dipped into sauce…

…and eaten. I still can’t do the folding thing right so I’m going to get TTL to fold it for me when I go again. 😉

ikan bakar us

Restauran Ikan Bakar Fend is a great place to head to if you’re hankering for some ikan bakar. It’s a testament to the popularity of the place that they don’t require a proper signboard – the place uses a canvas signboard tied down with rope, and it’s been in operation for over a year!

It’s not very easy to find though so here’s Google Maps to the rescue!

  3. your map is wrong lah. it is somewhere at glomac square there, behind subway, behind the alladin restaurant.
but the ikan bakar is really superb. last time they used to sell their ikan bakar using a van underneath a tree. and the queue was damn long, and their ikan bakar finished damn fast.
now that they have a shop, it is great because they have more supplies of ikan already. hehehe.

  6. wow! this is really cool! grill/bbq fish, eh?
I haven’t have this for ages!
We do lotsa bbq steak, sausage in general, not seafood.
I realise they store the fish in a big tub without any ice brings down the temperature… interesting..

  7. Chingy: Yeah it’s around the Taman Bahagia area near Giant LDP. 🙂
KY: It’s close to the SS6 area, that’s all I know. I know we walked away from the Giant LDP so it should be around there. 🙂
Yatz: It’s a great place for lunch. Ventilation could do with a bit of work though.
Cheryl: I prefer ikan pari. Stingray is better than fish any day. 🙂
mat: Hello old reader! Welcome back! 🙂
It’s great to have you back. Cheers!
    Chriso: It’s good stuff indeed!
seth.frostheart: No worries. It’s somewhere around there. My direction a big tragic but it’s definitely around there. 🙂
    vantuz: Thanks for the correction!
The history is much appreciated too. Cheers! 🙂
hitomi: Ya it’s a bit unorthodox having comment on the top. Or you meant it didn’t load? It happens sometimes, it’s coz of the massive database entries that’s going on now coz I got someone to do the old entries.
It’s about RM 12.50 for the meal. 🙂
Simon Seow: Yeah this one is really good. I love the ikan pari. Can be a bit inconsistent though. First time it was great. Second time it was just alright.
purefaith: Hmm…I’ll ask tomorrow. A co-worker has a GPS unit.
YingYang: You should, it’s really good. 🙂
    Erica: Thanks Erica! 🙂
Paul: Pretty good ikan pari eh? 🙂
suituapui: They have really good ulam too. It doesn’t take much to make good ulam since it’s like…raw veggies. But it’s the sauce that’s good. 🙂
eiling: Yeah mine too! I prefer stingray to fish. I can even eat the bones (cartilage actually).
Ju Ann: Hello there, Ju Ann! Hmm…I can’t actually remember much of that night. 😉
I shall be in Singapore again, with my memory intact this time. 🙂
    Meet again, yes?
Mike: Well, I’ve been in rehab. Thanks for checking back and thanks for reading! The old posts will be up real soon. 🙂
I have someone doing the data entry.
Steven: Hmm…that I’m not sure. I shall ask.
cynthia: Quick defrost, Malaysian style. 😉
miu miu: It does, tastes good too. 🙂
Jade Zheng: Haha! I have neither the time nor the talent to draw, Google Maps comes in handy here. 😉
Edi神: Er…those are my coworkers. 🙂

  10. Brother, your google map is pointing to the totally wrong place laaaa… It is at another side of the road, not at the place u point “Somewhere here”… I went to find this place according to ur “Somewhere here” and i ended up circling around that area for half an hour la bro! If you have time, pls correct the photo of google map. It is actually directly behind Giant Mall (in ur google map, its the empty area under Jalan ss6/12 at the bottom). But i think the google map is not updated.. so in there it doesnt show any roads there.
