My new dSLR – Sony alpha 350 14.2 MP

sony alpha dslr

I went to 1U with Zoe yesterday to get a new digicam. I figured I would be better off getting a dSLR this time, despite the bulkiness. Correct that – it is because of the bulkiness. It would be really hard to lose a dSLR and the neck strap offers some level of protection against water hazards – I dropped a digicam into a waterfall last year.

I got the Sony a350 package with a double zoom lens kit – DT18-70mm F3.5-5.6 / DT55-200 mm F4-5.6. No, I don’t know what the numbers mean either. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The salesperson also offered a Sony bag for RM 160 or a Sony bag + extra battery for RM 350, of which I took the latter. He then proceeded to go on about screen protectors:

Sales guy: The Sony alpha LCD can be easily scratched. You should probably get a screen protector for it.
HB: You’re trying to sell me more stuff right? Is this your third pitch now?
Sales guy: Er…well we can give you a discount…
Sales girl (interjecting): No, we’ll give it to you for free.
Sales guy: She’s such a nice person.
HB: Yes, she is. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

It cost me about RM 3,800 for everything. I am officially broke for the entire month of January. The first shot of Zoe above is the first ever shot by the sixthseal.com Sony alpha 350.

alpha zoe me

This is the second. Heh!

Props to Suanie for your generous offer to teman me when I was down.

Cheers Eiling for driving 45 minutes down to teman me.

zoe extra hot

Thanks Zoe for teman-ing me!

You three get an unlimited lifetime voucher redeemable 5 times, anytime, anywhere, anything (within reason – terms and conditions apply). ๐Ÿ˜‰

P/S – Zoe, your heart will not stop beating unless you have a cardiac arrest. It’s really painful when that happens so you won’t be able to talk. The medulla oblongata ensures that our hearts (and breathing) is regulated automagically. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. purefaith: Yeah, at least I’ll be very careful with it this time. No roller coaster rides for it.
KY: Rich? My credit card won’t even swipe! I’m paying by installments. 0% interest, thanks to the economy right now. Haha!
andrew: Yeah, see ya at the MDG 2 auditions!
Tan Yee Hou: Zoe always damn cute one. ๐Ÿ™‚
Myhorng: No lar, Nando we shared the meal coz we both weren’t really hungry. I just wanted the Extra Hot thing but the photo didn’t come out right. Zoe is gonna pay for my movie tickets next time so come, let’s go watch a movie. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. You’re welcome. I don’t need your voucher with so many terms and conditions. You can have it yourself. If you want to give, give an unconditional one. I don’t wanna drive anymore. Next time you will drive.

  3. Good choice, the original Zeiss lenses are hideously expensive but as the Sony has a stabiliser built into the body (SSS – Super Steady Shot) you can use cheaper lenses and still get the benefit of stabilised pictures!
Can check out stuff from Sigma and Tamron and older K/M lenses.
Alberts blog (Glaring Notebook) is a great resource for Sony owners.

  6. Congrats on the purchase. You’ll like the liveview for sure. by the way the number of the lenses indicates the focal length of the lens.
generally, the bigger number, the longer the focal length, enables you to have further reach.
if not, just google it and you’ll get whole lots of info. oh by the way, join the sony alpha user forum.

  11. Very nice! And a pleasant change from all the Canikon cameras that predominate the market. Always good to go against the flow, and the Sony is a very nice choice. Great, albeit expensive, lenses available, and the in-body stabilization is worth it’s weight in functionality.

  12. ahmike: Will do. The Sony alpha community is quite strong eh?
hitomi: Er…one of them dropped into a waterfall. It’s just statistics. I bring my digicam everywhere, so I have a higher chance of dropping it. It’s just like if you drive more often you have a higher chance of accidents compared to someone who doesn’t drive. ๐Ÿ™‚
clement: Nope, the tickets are too expensive and I’m already broke this month. Spending CNY in KL. Unfortunate. Can’t watch the fireworks display by the fine citizens of Sibu.
Yatz: I am like that one. I’m going all Sony for my digicams. I used to go all Nikon. Brand loyalty. ๐Ÿ™‚
Gin: Sony has good marketing and the alpha feels very solid. ๐Ÿ™‚
ShaolinTiger: Thanks ST! I wanted to call you but didn’t have your number so I called Kim, who didn’t return my call. :p
I asked for your number from Suanie but it came in some format my cell phone can’t read. I wanted to go to the place you adviced in an email you sent me not long ago.
It’s quite expensive from the Sony Centre.
Chriso: Yeah, she is eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰
YingYang: For sure, my friend. ๐Ÿ™‚
FranZ: I’m going all Sony this year for digicams. Besides, the alpha has a large fanbase.
The Bull: Yeah, and she’s also a minor. ๐Ÿ˜‰
No worries, full explaination will be up soon when work clears up a bit.
Z0E: Embaressing? That word does not exist in my dictionary. ๐Ÿ˜‰
hOcmun: Yeah, I’ve been playing with it yesterday, shooting random shots. It’s pretty good. Cheers for the clarification! ๐Ÿ™‚
Reta: Yup, it’s gonna be up soon in full 14.2 MP dSLR glory. ๐Ÿ˜‰
    eiling: Yeah, unconditional. ๐Ÿ™‚
Lisa Lee: Really? Thank you, but I look nothing like him. ๐Ÿ™‚
Cheers for the compliment though. ๐Ÿ™‚
goolooloo: Nope, I actually lost weight. I’m 63 kg now I believe.
    David: Greetings! ๐Ÿ™‚
    Strong community eh?

calvin: I have brand loyalty. I don’t know, I used to be all Nikon until rehab and then I went all Sony.
    Will do, bro.
Jeff: Insurance? I don’t know, never thought about that. If there’s insurance I sure would love to hear about it. I keep losing digicams.
chyan: Yeah, it is kinda expensive but at least it’s not RM 9,999 like the Sony alpha 700. ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m not going home for CNY.
Vickie: Yeah, or I’ll just not eat supper. ๐Ÿ™‚
Na: You obviously missed the part where I mentioned it’s not my results. She’s not pregnant. I’m shooting blanks.
Simon Seow: Well, gotta have a digicam, so it’s a necessity. ๐Ÿ™‚
breadpitt: I’m not rich, I’m paying by installments. ๐Ÿ™‚
Yeah, it’s intentional, but it didn’t come out right for some reason – this was not taken using the new dSLR but the old backup digicam so it’s hard to focus on two things at once.
seth.frostheart: Yeah, and worse still I’m not going back for CNY so no ang pow for me. ๐Ÿ™‚
Will do, here at sixthseal.com, we always aim to please. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Michale (Mike): There’s no pregnant woman.
Trey: Hey, you remembered. Cheers for that. ๐Ÿ™‚
    bongkersz: I definately will. ๐Ÿ™‚
Paul: The same package with two lens? It costs RM 2,999 here for the package alone.
thlun: Rm3.8k for that plus extras (battery, bag, CF cards etc)
    KY: Haha!
Grant (Intensecure): Sony has a very solid feel about it, and I like the moulded frame with warts on it. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Feels a bit scratch proof and the orange dot for screwing in the lenses is great too. It’s branding Sony is good at. The alpha has great branding and marketing and I love the steady shot feature. Very nifty for shaky hands like mine. ๐Ÿ™‚
