Williams Mamak @ Taman Mayang

mamak

Williams Mamak is a rodent infested roadside stall with seating arrangements precariously set in a hazardous manner beside, nay, on the roadside. It’s also pretty expensive even for restaurant standards. Why do people still throng to this place like flies to…er, butter?

williams mamak

Well, Williams claim to fame is its unique concept of Italian food in a mamak stall. Nowhere else can you find a mamak serving Italian food – it’s exotic. It’s also located near the old LimKokWing building and you just can’t beat the ambience of having cute little rats scurrying about while you eat.

ribena lychee

The penultimate drink in William’s Mamak is undisputedly the Ribena Lychee (RM 6). It’s a huge concoction of purple goodness that you can see on almost every table. Patrons are indulging in this 1 liter monstrosity with a fervor previously unseen to my eyes. It also sets a precedence for the rest of Williams meals – the portions of the dishes are huge!

tuna rice

It should be noted that Williams is a firm believer in The First Baptist Church of No Menu but the waiters possess the admirable ability to rattle off the dishes they serve in a very well rehearsed spiel. I can only hear bits and pieces – risotto, spaghetti etc. I asked for a recommendation and was given the Tuna Rice.

fried rice tuna

The Tuna Rice came in a huge portion with a hidden gem which I nearly missed due to the poor lighting conditions. Williams is also a member of the Dim Lighting Appreciation Society. The tuna fried rice is served with tuna pieces swimming in gravy on the side. I was complaining about the canned tuna to my dining companion…until I saw a HUGE fillet of grilled tuna underneath all the gravy. Delicious! The waiter overheard me and told me that’s the best part.

chicken pasta

Huei Juin went for the Pasta with Chicken. It was repeated as “Pasta Ayam” by the waiter – I just love the fusion of our national language with Italian food. It sounds so wrong, yet so right. Heh!

pasta ayam

It’s quite good though, it’s made with Bolognese sauce instead of Carbonara, which I usually prefer. Williams is generous with the chicken pieces and the entire dish was practically drowned in the sauce, which I’m told is how it’s done over here. I ended up eating more of this than my own. The portions were huge though and we didn’t manage to finish either one of the orders.

williams us

The bill came up to about RM 64 for two – not exactly cheap for a mamak. This is my second visit – the first time was with Yee Hou and I went again last night with Huei Juin.

The litmus test: Would I go again? Definitely! Despite of the dodgy hygiene standards, I am intrigued by the constantly updated menu items and the concept of an Italian mamak in Malaysia. There are a lot of interesting dishes I have yet to try and I can’t wait to go again.

Jom, mamak!

Williams Mamak is located at Jalan SS 26/9, Taman Mayang.

  2. the food may be good, but it’s definitely not worth the price of a restaurant IMHO, given the hygiene standards (and yes, I do go to mamaks where there are rats scurrying around)

  3. pricey yes… but yummy! must have the mango with lychee/longan too! i love the indomie with pandan chicken, and mee raja with chicken and/or beef, and the ham + cheese naan 🙂 and William makes some kickass sambal concoction.

  4. I wonder if Murni SS2 has the same price tag on its menu. The food is quite similar.
And one more thing. A mamak restaurant is either own, run, operated by a mamak fella.
William is a mamak? Definetly not,

btw, i have stayed in tmn mayang for almost 2 years and have only been to williams 3x, simply becoz they have too much of food varieties there till i could not decide what to go for. but the last time i had their mee raja, and it was awesome with the fried chicken and all. and, i think there is no dishes that the kitchen cnt make.

  6. the tuna dish looks like sardine from the can, pasta chicken looks like the ol mee goreng mamak…..64 bucks is pretty expensive. especially when our financials are not up to par. 🙂

All comments later ya, going AGAIN to Williams now. If you see me, say hello. I’ll be the one playing with my new HTC.

  9. Dude, try Nasi Goreng Ketam man, beats any dish there FLAT! And for the drinks try Ribena Special or Ribena Longan, Ribena Lychee IMO not as nice as Longan.
And I’ll never go back to Murni anymore, its packed all the time and food quality has dropped over the years.
Oh and do try their Roti Naan Mozarella Cheese with Turkey Ham. And if you’re not so hungry, try Triple H(no, not the wrestler!) daging.

  12. RM64 is too expensive for mamak. Especially with a complete ensemble of rats, roaches and night bugs… But with the right company, anywhere is great I guess. Loved the tattoos… 🙂

  17. I’m always going there at midnight, having food such as mee raja seafood, nasi goreng ketam, and antipesto ayam. Their food are mouth watering, but the cleanliness of the stall, somewhat disappoint me.
William is popular among students, who is rarely going to Chillies or TGI friday for an itallian food. The price is reasonable for me, the most expensive is only Rm15/plate. Basicaly, the price is depending on which of food you ordered.
By the way, Willian is not a mamak. I can’t see any mamak at their stall, in fact when one of my chinese friends scream out ‘Mamak’ word at William, he denied.
And, most people loves William, simply because he is so funny, and respect their customers. He knows to suggest food to the newcomers.
One of his funny sentences that I remembered, “Jangan main belakang”. (Don’t do anal sex. haha).

  18. I concur with Pixeldoll. Msians tend to use the word “mamak” to describe practically all road side stalls. Mamak stalls/shops are shops that are owned/operated by mamaks, i.e. Indian Muslim folks.
Also, many people use the word “mamak” loosely to describe Indian makan shops that are NOT Indian Muslim, case in point, Kanna Curry House, Raju’s, Sri Paandi’s. Those are NOT mamaks. Those are Indian makan shops. There, I’ve said it 😛

  19. William’s owner is the brother (or related) to SS2 Murni, if I am not mistaken. The food is good, big portion but hygiene standards a bit off. Well, we don’t fear thing we don’t know or don’t see hehe!
ps: William is not mamak eh.

  26. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
