Shark Fin Noodle

shark fin noodle stall

This has gotta be one of the more decadent dishes you can afford to eat every day. Weighing in at a relatively easy-on-the-wallet price tag of RM 5.50, it’s practically a steal! This Shark Fin Noodles is located at Ming Tien food court, and I feel obliged to proclaim the goodness of this particular dish to all and sunder.

The Shark’s Fin Noodle stall serves up shark fin soup and shark fin noodles. Imagine noodles dumped into shark’s fin soup and you’ll have an idea about what this dish is all about. It’s almost criminal that most places do not serve this – it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that chucking some good ol’ noodles into leftover shark fin soup would make a tasty dish.

Granted, at the price you’re forking out (RM 5.50) you shouldn’t expect prime fin from a 3,000 kg shark inside your dish…my agaration tells me that there’s only a sliver (or two) of real shark fin inside the dish.

However, the texture is authentic enough, and the crab sticks and other miscellaneous ingredients coupled with the starchy and vinegar-ish soup fabricates a more-than-passable approximation of shark’s fins soup (with noodles).

I am actually quite intrigued about shark’s fin noodles. It’s almost a no-brainer to create something like this. Leftover soup? No worries! Just reheat and dump in some noodles for a meal. It’s the first time I’ve sampled this dish and it has already engendered a craving, nay, a hunger for shark fin noodles with a healthy dash of vinegar.

It’s a bargain at RM 5.50!

  1. Ive never had shark fin soup, or shark fin at all. Does the fin really give it flavor or is it a gimmicky thing that is used just to describe that kind of soup?

  5. Hey, have u tried the Shihlin oyster mee sua? it taste like the shark fin soup but without shark fin of course – since its oyster mee sua. It had that thick starchy soup and i think mee sua is more suitable for a soup of thicker consistency.. mee is a lil too thick and heavy for starchy soups. πŸ˜›

  6. The sharkfin noodles at Asia Cafe is around RM6, but the portion is much bigger than the one at Asia Cafe. It’s also more flavourful. πŸ˜›

  7. mike: Shark’s fin is tasteless…it has completely no taste at all. It’s all about the texture and the taste comes from the sauce(s) uses to cook it. πŸ™‚
PJ Old Towner: Hey, thanks for the tip! There’s a Sarawak kolo mee over here in SS6 too but it’s not authentic at all. Tastes more like pan mee. πŸ™‚
PinkPorkChop: Yeah, you too! Good luck in Genting. πŸ™‚
Jan: How can shark’s fin soup be vegetarian? πŸ™‚
Shark is a kind of meat right? On another note sea cucumbers…is it considered “vegetarian”? πŸ™‚
I like sea cucumber soup too, in general, starchy soups go down well with me.
Shirley Snow: Me too! It’s the first time I’ve eaten shark fin noodles as well. I’ve only had shark’s fin soup before. πŸ™‚
    chefmel: Yup, I have! πŸ™‚
I love Shihlin’s oyster mee sua. It’s great stuff, very awesome indeed.
Kun: The good thing about Mien Tian is that it’s open till late and you can go after a drinking session for Chinese food late at night. πŸ™‚
maggot: Hmm…good question. There’s no pork in it, chicken pieces are inside, but I don’t know if it’s halal or not.
Naoko: Okay, let’s go try someday! πŸ™‚
Justin: Shark’s fin made from pork gelatin?
Interesting, I never heard of anything like that before. πŸ™‚

  10. HB, shark fin soup is something of a debate for animal rights groups and Chinese people. Here in San Francisco some restaurants serve shark meats which is not bad tasting at all. If you’re going to take the fin might as well take the whole sharks instead letting it bleed to death back in the water.
Mom is researching on a mock shark fin soup recipe which will be out soon.

  11. HB, I eaten shark fin in many parties in San Francisco. Animal Rights Groups have been trying to stop many foods serve in fine restaurants due to cruel treatments. Some restaurants serve shark meats and it is very tasty.
If fishermen getting the sharks fins might as well the whole sharks instead of letting it bleed to death in the water after cutting off their fins. Mom is researching on a mock shark fin soup recipe and it will be out soon.

  12. Jan: You know, some of the vegetarian stuff is good. I had an AWESOME vegetarian drumstick once – looks like meat, tastes like meat, but it’s not meat.
Sea cucumbers? Looks okay to me. You scared of worms? πŸ™‚
    xes: Haha! πŸ™‚
Vickie: Yup, I’ve eaten shark meat too, that we caught while deep sea fishing off Sabah. It has a very grainy (sandy, almost) texture but rather good stuff.
Trey: It’s probably coz we’re close to the sea. πŸ™‚
However, the lobsters and such is quite expensive here though.
annant: Yup, and the soup is great too! πŸ™‚
Marlboro Guy: I only found one or two STRANDS of shark’s fin inside though…it’s more for the taste of the soup. πŸ™‚

  13. Actually I doubt there’s any shark fin in this bowl of noodle, but hey, so long as it tastes good, I’m all for it. Killing sharks for some tasteless cartilage isn’t exactly a great thing to do anyway.

  14. What is the point of sharkfin soup? You could try a fake one and you wouldn’t know the difference (taste-wise).
Killing sharks for their fin seems utterly foolish. Anyone who believes in its medicinal properties are misleaded. You’re more likely to get diseases from eating shark especially with the mercury content.

  15. Nicole: You have a good point there. I don’t believe in the medicinal properties (my faith lies in stuff that ends with -zolam -zepam -codone – all synthetic pharmaceuticals). I just eat it coz it tastes good. πŸ™‚
