Sarawak Laksa @ Madam Tang’s Cafe, Kuching

madam tangs

You know how I always say I prefer Asam Laksa to Sarawak Laksa? Well, I don’t know if it was the rather intense workout this morning but I just had lunch with the Project Alpha Season 1 bloggers at Madam Tang’s Cafe in Petanak and it was fucking good.

The Sarawak Laksa Special (RM 10.80) comes with a lot of huge, juicy prawns. It is as good as the one in Golden Arch Garden Laksa which was a favorite haunt of mine when I was working in Kuching due to the proximity to my office back then.

sarawak laksa

Sarawak Laksa is a bit different from the other santan (coconut milk) laced concoctions and it was refreshing (not sure if this is the correct adjective but it feels right to me) to get reacquainted with this superb specialty from my hometown again.

A squeeze of lime into the belacan paste mixed into the Sarawak laksa is a ritual I haven’t done in a long time. Heavenly.

beef noodles

The Beef Noodle Special is pretty awesome too! We had a taste of it and ended up ordering a bowl to share.

I also managed to meet up with a lot of Kuching bloggers and good friends today – that was another highlight of the trip! πŸ™‚

Next up is dinner at Topspot @ Permata Carpark which is really famous for their seafood. I’m still full from lunch though so I’m not sure if I can handle a lot of that tonight. >.<

Golden Arch and this one is good in Kuching.
Cyril: Hey, it’s good to meet up with you too! Have a great weekend mate! πŸ™‚
ah nel: Ya, there’s just too many new places opening up in Kuching. A lot has changed. Did Somerset Gateway turn into a new hotel? Permata Carpark is now just called Medan Kereta. Lots of new malls too. πŸ™‚
The Slog: Yeah, Permata Carpark is near the waterfront but I’ve never heard of it being refered to as Cat’s Eye Place.
It’s the one on top of the multi storey carpark near Somerset Gateway, the open air seafood place with loads of people. πŸ™‚
DYMM Tuanku: Haha! Nah, it’s Photoshopped, those are actually tree trunks chopped into stools. πŸ˜‰
Yup, you should try Sarawak Laksa at least once. It’s quite different from the other laksa varients coz we don’t use santan. πŸ™‚

  8. chefmel: Wow! That’s hardcore. Heh! I can do it too…with chicken rice. I love chicken rice (steamed). πŸ™‚
Erica: Nope, Sarawak Laksa does not have coconut milk in it. πŸ™‚
gypsy-on-the-move: Yeah, you should, it’s a nice place. Something for everyone – Miri has its charms, Kuching is nice, Sibu is quiet, plus lots of rural areas to explore. πŸ™‚
jg: We ate there two days in a row! I had the beef noodles special today + Sarawak laksa special again. Haha!
Kuching bloggers meet? Hmm…you’ll have to ask the Kuching bloggers.
    Rose? Anna?
ah nel: Somerset Gateway? Yeah, I used to stay VERY OFTEN there despite the fact that I have my own place. πŸ˜‰
It’s nice – spent a memorable NYE there once, a bit of a hazy NYE, but still memorable. πŸ™‚
annna: Oh, I didn’t know it was a chain! Their Sarawak Laksa and beef noodles is good. I love it! πŸ™‚
ahlost: It has a lot of prawns in it – reasonable by KL standards though, my lunch costs about that here. Probably coz of the place where I work – only a few choices around. πŸ™‚

  9. why can’t my town get food like this? we have 3 Chinese restaurants, 2 Mexican restaurants, and one Japanese restaurant.
i want food like this! NOW! and at the same low price.
that’s why all the foreign people move to the Midwest so they are not as easily caught for being illegal immigrants.
BTW none of the restaurants i named can speak English, but their food is good.
it’s ironic that these illegal immigrants come to America to work and make a living yet you got lazy Americans that refuse to work and live off the government.
so my hat goes off to all you illegal immigrants, thank you.

  10. WEEN: Haha! You have a very oblique way of giving compliments.
Well, social security in my opinion makes people lazy. We have a variant of that in our country as well. The people who have to work hard (we are immigrants, technically) learn values and tenacity which is much more beneficial to us om the long run as a race, so I’m not complaining. πŸ™‚
matt: It was RM 10.80 coz of the huge shrimp. πŸ™‚
Sure thing, more coming up after I’m done with work. Cheers! πŸ™‚

  11. That has got to be a kick arse laksa, for 10.80. The prawns look excellent. I hope it was peeled.
Did Ah So come with you or you left her in the hotel room while you pig out?

  12. rocket: Yeah, there are generous portions of prawns in there – large ones too! It’s unpeeled – best way to eat it is to slurp the gravy from the head of the prawn. πŸ™‚
Haha! No la, it’s a video shoot trip, didn’t bring anyone. πŸ™‚
KY: Yeah, the beef noodles is good too! Wanted to go Open Air but heard the quality has dropped. πŸ™‚

  14. im not talking about ss. im talking about Americans that refuse to work so the government sends them free checks in the mail to pay for their rent and send them link cards so they can by food.
ever see that Simpsons episode were the immigrant passes the constitutional test to become an American and after he passes the test he tells the judge “now which way to the welfare office?”

  15. Darren: Yeah, very awesome beef noodles – we have a good one in Sibu too called Aho. Halal to boot. πŸ™‚
Christine: Sarawak Laksa is pretty good if you don’t eat it often. πŸ™‚
Yeah, you should head down to Kuching.
I’ve eaten at Ahwa many times coz it’s quite close to where I used to live, but this Ah Wah is a new place that I haven’t tried. πŸ™‚
Charles: Hey sorry to hear that mate…but on the bright side, at least you can hit on the Kuching chicks.
eddy: Jestina? She wasn’t in Kuching. πŸ™‚
Eriku: Heh! Yeah this place is a great place to eat!
No worries, we’re all cool here, just having fun! πŸ™‚
WEEN: Yeah, I’m not talking about SS too, I’m talking about a similar situation here. πŸ˜‰
We have something like social security over here too, but only to certain races.
No food stamps though, but lots of perks everywhere.
Yeah, I saw that Simpsons episode, love the show!
Kelly: It’s awesome stuff! You should drop by Kuching sometime to eat it. πŸ™‚

More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
