Laksa Utara @ The Middle of Nowhere

shah alam laksa stall

I was driving yesterday afternoon when I realized I haven’t had breakfast or lunch and I was really early so I decided to stop by this roadside stall.

shah alam stall

Now, when I say roadside stall, I mean the REAL kind – the ones that can pack up and leave without a trace…

shah alam chairs

…with plastic chairs for you to sit on, arranged nicely in clusters under the shade of trees.

shah alam laksa

I only had RM 4 in my wallet and I ordered their Laksa Utara (RM 3). It tasted pretty good, probably coz I was very hungry. It had all the right stuff inside – boiled egg, fish pieces and shallots. Laksa Utara (Northern Laksa) is asam laksa, sorta, kinda.

shah alam chendol

This was washed down by a bowl of nice cold chendol (RM 1). The patrons of this place seem to be predominantly blue collar workers and truckers as can be seen here:

shah alam people

You’re supposed to throw the bowl and spoon in one place and there’s a bucket of water for you to wash your hands in.

shah alam rubbish

Now tell me this isn’t authentic street food!

shah alam wash

Alas, I think I used my right hand to wash though. smirk

All photos taken using the Sony Cyber-shot TX-5. You know the best thing about these outlets? I only had RM 4 and pulled it out (all of the cash in the wallet) and the dude said, it’s okay, we’ll just make it RM 3 (so to not leave my wallet empty). *touched*

  1. mamasuri: Yeah, I can imagine! The cool weather and the hot laksa. I’ve never had laksa in Tanah Rata though – gotta make CAMERON instead of GENTING the highlands destination of choice now. πŸ™‚

  2. That’s pretty generous of the bloke, he probably loss money selling to you. So you should go back and bring Eiling.

  3. Ah! Cendol pulut! I had that in Sg Petani (Kedah) – not bad at all. As for the laksa, I think I remain loyal to our own Sarawak version. Laksa Utara – Those guys probably came from those parts – Kedah or roundabout there.

  4. rocket: Yeah, the hospitality of these people manning stores never cease to amaze me. I was surprised as well! πŸ™‚
Jeff: It’s not exactly peaceful, considering it’s located beside a highway but the foliage gives the illusion of being in an oasis. πŸ˜‰
suituapui: Alas! I should have gone for that instead. I went for the tapai version, pretty good.
Yeah, looks like they come from the North, not that I can tell, but from the stuff they sell. πŸ™‚
KY: Yup, it’s mixed into your cendol. You can have either tapai or pulut. I had the tapai, pretty good! πŸ™‚

This one is located in Shah Alam. How’s the one in Ipoh?
eiling: Heh! Yeah, and it’s in Shah Alam too – near the sports stadium.
Your taste to atas for this though. Haha! πŸ™‚
kom: I can’t see the characters. Chinese? πŸ™‚
Ryan: Yup, only in stalls like this. πŸ™‚
I eat chicken rice almost every day at this place near my workplace and the most they give me is a 10 cent discount every 7 times I go or something like that. My bill comes up to RM 8.10 so it’s annoying to have 90 cents jingling around most times when I’m a regular there.

  7. first off, Im sorry, Hb, for the shit I caused. over and done. i did not mean to offend. but thats a good looking trailer. kind of like the barbeque places or hot dog stands. you know whats good and whats not. like bele chere in my home town. or hagis, or ramps, or cressy greenns ( they smell like… the greens and ramps both). like chitlens. I dislike them. but I like ribs and shrimp. everybodies different. like snails and oysters. I like fried oysters (not raw) but the thought of snails… I can eat dove, shoot off a tree or powerline, in fact very good, but pigion.. not so much. why is that? calamri is great. like onion rings. or prosutio grosses me out, but I cook country ham slices barlely done, and thats ok. thanks hb. after all this, I dont want meat, fish or fowl. Ill just have a some milk and and egg sandwich.. wait. wtf… Im truly sorry if
I made anybody mad. though shit. I like those little places.

    Chen: Hello Chen! πŸ™‚
Heh! I didn’t get diarrhea (can never spell this word), and I eat all sorts of crap. πŸ™‚
steph: You know, I’ve never had a laksa craving before. At least I don’t remember it. It’s not one of my favorite foods but I’ll eat it. πŸ™‚
Yeah, authentic Malaysian food is hard to find down under. It’s usually fusion HK food. πŸ™‚

  12. one thing this recall has done is show people that egg farms aren’t like that cozy home farm with Foghorn Leghorn romancing the lady hens, they are basically forced labor camps for chickens and it’s amazing we don’t have more of these recalls

  16. Found your blog in the Google how to flatten abs directory, very nice job, thanks. My positive reinforcement is based on self expectations. I have goals and expectations like anyone else. These goals or expectations keep me focused, in the sense that if I don’t live up to them, there will be a greater consequence. So, I’ll do my best to keep up, that way I don’t have to suffer whatever the consequence is.

  17. I have been out of work for longer than 2 years. I lost the house, my cars and I am not able to find work anywhere, not really for minimum wage. I did plenty of digging and research for online jobs and located many didn’t pay perfectly. Then I came across this amazing site advertising Mystery Shopper Employment Agency and wow it’s changed my entire life. I now make more money than I did before and collect an inspection every couple of weeks. I just thought I’d share this with anyone that could be inside a similar situation. Sincerely.

  23. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  24. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  26. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
