Microdermal implants – my third nipple

microdermal implant instruments

Microdermal implants uses surgical grade titanium to anchor an interchangeable stud under your skin. It’s done by creating a “pocket” under your skin and it’s a lot easier to heal than the previous surface bar piercing that I have. I shall do a quick n00b drawing to show how it works.

microdermal diagram

Basically, it needs to be anchored towards something, in this case, my ribcage. There is a long titanium anchor that goes up and a shorter one that goes down. The first time you do it, it’s best to have a flat stud so it won’t rub too much against your clothes.

It’s a lot easier to get piercings in high school and university coz you don’t have to give considerations about work. However, now that I’m working, piercings (except for the usual orthodox ones) have to be concealable under office attire.

microdermal implant measuring

Michelle calls it my third nipple. smirk

Fresh says it looks like someone just hammered a nail in my heart but it’s actually straight in the middle of my body. Frankie of Zoo Body Piercing measured it so it would be right in the center of my body.

The procedure is fairly simple – a small gauge needle (which is a large needle – the higher the gauge, the thinner it is) is used to make 4 incisions under your skin. The top part of the anchor is pushed in followed by the bottom part.

I didn’t find it painful but then again your mileage may vary since everyone has different pain thresholds. I actually like pain so it was quite enjoyable for me.

Microdermal implants takes only 3 months to heal and costs RM 250. You have to really take care of it during the first few days though. However, my approach towards body modification is always LITHA (Leave It The Hell Alone) and it usually works for me.

Thanks to bff Lainey for the recommendation! Zoo Body Piercing also does branding – my next project! =D

  1. Katie: Heh! My wrist piercings were doomed to fail from the start. Let’s hope this one lasts! :)
    Thanks for the tip!
Yours look great btw, pity it got rejected. :)

  2. Kathy: Me too! I’m planning to do some branding next. :)
P/S – Sorry, accidentally removed your comment just now, putting it back.

  3. Wow this is a great site! I like how you like Huai Bin, just that the silly spam in the comments can be off putting at times.

  4. Huai Bin,
I like the honesty you put into your posts. I found your site last month and have been pouring through your past posts!
The only down side I find is the silly spam in the comments. Kinda off putting at times.

  5. kopiko: Thanks for reading kopiko! :)
Yeah, I did a site migration and lost all the comments from the previous posts. Sorry about the spam, fixing that issues.
There’s also someone pretending to be me so unless you see the blug spanner authentication beside my name, it’s not me. :)
    Cheers again for reading!
On another note, I took a shower just now and realized I bought the wrong kind of cotton – bits of it were sticking to my microdermal piercing so I took a good 5 minutes to pluck it out while holding the implant in place. It started bleeding again FML.

  6. eiling: It didn’t hurt that much at all. I swear to God.
None of that macho bullshit, it just feels like an injection, which I used to have a lot of experience with *shifty eyed
It’s not that bad, depends on your pain tolerance though. Lainey thought the industrial was painful but I didn’t. *shrugs
    Come try it! :)

  7. ALEX: Heh! I’m not even good in Photoshop (can do resize, gamma correction, etc) much less AutoCAD. ;)
Thanks bro! Yeah, wanted to do something different. :)

  8. Frankie’s great. he did my branding too, and just abit of a precaution for you, for branding to look great – it’s a bitch to take care of! :) But past the healing stage, it looks beautiful

  9. victer: HAHAHA! Oh man, I don’t think I can survive that kind of body modification. ;)
    Iron Man’s heart. Heh!
tipsyx: Hey thanks for sharing! I’m still looking for a design for branding, but I have to admit, I’m not so good in the “aftercare” department. :(
    Thanks tipsyx! :)
sirei/rei: It just looks painful but it’s not really. Just a few incisions with a needle and the implant goes in. It’s like…getting an injection, no big deal. :)
hun lei: HAHAHAHA! No, I would have posted pictures if I had. ;)

  10. I think the person in the background of the first photo looks like they’re having second thoughts about getting a piercing!
…or just got lip ring ;-)

  11. Jeff: HAHAHAHA! Good observational skillz mate. ;)
He was getting a tattoo I believe and just watching us. :)
xes: Heh! My thoughts exactly. When I did my first septum piercing back in NZ, my bros were like wtf, if I didn’t protect my nose, I’ll be in a lot of pain. =D

  12. Sorry to tell you dude… But your procedure had ZERO sterility!
No proper skin prep… Tattoo guy touching nonsterile surfaces… Gloves not sterile et cetera…I wonder why he bothered to change gloves at all!
Just pray you don’t get infected implant… MRSA is a b*tch!

  13. Dude, before your free AirAsia ticket runs out, you gotta go to Taiwan and get a genitalia bead implant. Very popular among the Taiwanese taikos.

  14. Barefoot: Well…it was better than my previous one, you should take a look at that. :)
I noticed that too. Oh well.
I’m not too worried about the implant, it’s doing well (or seems to be). It’s the industrial that kept on bleeding last night but it’s okay now.
    Cheers for the input! :)
e: They do that in prisons over here too – genital beeding. It’s very popular in jails and prisons in certain countries, definately Yakuza inspired from our side.
It’s a good idea though bro, but I’ll prefer not to before I have kids. ;)
Kaixiang: Nice! Yeah, this was a recommendation from Lainey, she did an industrial there a couple of weeks ago too. :)

  15. These things can ruin the elasticity of the swimsuit, which can be a problem, so you need to rinse them out. Some fabrics break down because of chemicals or sweat. Rinsing out the swimsuit each time will help you make sure it holds up throughout the season.

  16. ciki: Heh! Yeah, I know, it was a rather impromptu thing I had only wanted to do an industrial at first. :)
    I’m a very impulsive person. =D
ah loon: Haha! No worries there mate. I don’t plan to do anything to my genitalia before I have kids. :)

  17. damn. I have no tats or piercings of any kind. except… lots. at age 50, it is a wonder I am alive. really . but please be careful, HB. transdermal metal implants cannot be removed that easily. like heart stents or metal joints. next time you need an mri, in an emergency, who is is there to say, hey wait a min… thats a bad idea .joints, stents etc.. are neccesarry to many to live.transdemal plates are not. how are you gonna clear airport security? or any secutity. Oh this?… I just put this in there cause I wanted to. Next… ( got 100 in line behind you, waiting to board, and they are not gonna be enamored of you.) plus its an infection waiting to happen, right over your heart and lungs. get rid of it, please, hb. as a friend, half a world away. I know it is a subculture and thats fine, I dont care or judge. to each their own. but unlike tats, subdural things dont show, when you are unconsious after an accident. Tom

  18. Hi bro, that is one killer piercing!! Is this shop in sg wang? If so, i think I managed to stumble upon it by mistake sometime last yr and was so close to getting multiple microdermal implants right there and then, below the collarbone from shoulder to shoulder until he told me the exorbitant cost of that endeavor which put me off that idea immediately (I naively assumed the price would be the standard body piercing price). I finally felt ready to get those implants so I went back to sg wang 2mths ago but I cant locate the shop!!! Its like the Twilight Zone, walking around in circles from floor to floor and unable to find it. If u remember the location, can u be so kind as to tell me what floor is it on and is it near any easy to remember landmarks? Cheers :)

  19. debbie: I love it too! :)
geston: Nice! It won’t last long though eh? Just like tattoos on the fingers. :)
tom robinson: Hey, thanks for your concern my friend. You are always listened to and heard.
Well, I don’t think it will trigger airport security coz my other piercings never did. However, understand your concern about infection and complications if I get into an accident.
I promise I’ll remove it the first time it shows signs of infection.
Thank you Tom. You’re like my friend/mentor from miles away. :)
dogbone: Yeah me too bro…I wonder what would happen. I’ve been through one before when I was in ICU but they took off all my peircings. This one might be a tad harder to take off though coz it’s an implant. :S
vertigo: Heh! I know what you mean mate. All shopping malls are like mazes to me.
Anyway, Zoo Body Art is located at Lot F138, 1st Floor of Sg Wang Plaza. :)
The landmark would be the exit to Lot 10 – walk straight in from there and you’ll see the place. Hope that helps!

  20. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  21. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  27. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
