    • Heh! Cheers Michelle! πŸ™‚

It tastes nothing close to what a dai chow place would come out with…

      …but hey, it’s really fast. πŸ˜‰

  1. They usually dip the fish fillet in batter and fry first and then they cook the sweet and sour sauce and pour over the fish. Serve immediately…or the fish will become soggy, not so nice anymore.

    • Yeah, I imagine that would taste better! πŸ™‚

I think using real fish would too – I only buy store brand pre-packaged dory fillets coz it’s cheap. However, it’s also 50% fish and 50% fillers so it’s not “real fish” per se.

Well, it’s supposed to be a quick and easy dish to whack up anyway. πŸ˜€

    • Yup, I love the fillets although I know it’s not real fish per se. Heh. It’s only about 50% fish but it tastes so good! πŸ™‚

No bones too, gotta love it.

    • Interesting read! Thanks for the link bro!

However, I seriously doubt some of the points brought up in the article – injected with pregnant women’s urine? That sounds troublesome and expensive to me. πŸ™‚

I’m sure it’s not the healthiest thing around – these fillets are only about 50% fish, but I don’t think it’s that bad either.

      …and hey, it’s cheap and delicious. πŸ˜€

    • Well, I just banged this dish up really quickly so I reckon it tasted pretty good for the time I put in it. Heh.

The dory fillets are cheap and delicious – very easy to work with since it has no bones. It’s kinda like surimi though – it’s not exactly real fish meat and there are health concerns raised by DC in the link above, but personally, I like these things.

I also love eating unhealthy stuff like century eggs, crab sticks etc. πŸ˜€

  2. HB, great recipe for that dish. I use rice flour batter for rice flour make it crispy. Family like sweet and sour sauce with pineapple and bell pepper some slice up onion. I sometime make Northern Chinese style with rice vinegar, sugar and water, cornstarch add dice up whatever you like vegetable in it

    • Yeah, some pineapple and peppers would go very well in a proper sweet and sour dish! πŸ™‚

I only used onions coz I didn’t have any pineapples around and I wanted to make something really quickly. πŸ˜€

    • Indeed bro, the onions weren’t even chopped properly.

Just wanted to get a quick meal done and I didn’t have tomatoes to boot. πŸ™‚

    • Yup, this is very fast cooking indeed. Heh! It’s almost as fast as cooking Indomee with fried eggs.

These fillets tastes good to me coz it doesn’t have bones and I have a feeling it’s pre-seasoned to boot. It’s salty. πŸ˜€

    • Heh! I wasn’t dicing it per se bro.

I just chopped it up so I could have an entire onion in the dish. I was craving for onions that day. πŸ™‚

    • Yup, a proper sweet and sour dish would have at least real tomatoes. πŸ™‚

I didn’t have any at home though and I wanted to make something quick. I was craving for onions so I put an entire onion in. Heh.

    • Hey there Darren!

Nope, these fish fillets are HEAVILY processed. πŸ˜‰

It’s not even real fish fillets – there’s only about 50% fish meat inside.

You won’t find an offensive smell or taste, the highly processed nature of the fillets just presents you with a pre-seasoned (kinda like crab sticks) fillet without bones. It’s just moulded to look like a fillet, but it’s delicious. πŸ˜€

    • Kids love the stuff! πŸ™‚

It’s nice as in fast food “nice” e.g. it appeals to a broad category of palates. It’s what it’s DESIGNED e.g. engineered to do. The Dory fish fillets are only 50% fish, the rest are “fillers” so a lot of artificial flavoring goes into it.

A lot of SCIENCE went into it to make sure it tastes good. Haha.

We can say it doesn’t taste good now coz we’ve trained ourselves to recognize excessive sodium and flavorings but you have to admit, to the general palate, it does taste good coz that’s what it’s meant to taste like. This is an engineered product, not an organic, fresh one, with all the flaws.
