Tower Chocolate Double Cheesecake

tower chocolate double cheesecake

Before Secret Recipe opened up a branch in Sibu, the place to get quality cakes for birthdays and other celebrations was at Tanahmas Hotel. They have pretty good cheesecakes in Peppers Cafe (the hotel’s cafe) and I revisited the place with Anthea right before flying back.

jelly pisang sibu

I was here a couple of days ago to explore the mythical Sibu Famous Jelly Pisang. I had the exact same thing this time around. Heh! I noticed that the entire bottom is made out of jelly – probably a good 1/3 of it, and I really liked how the entire shaved ice dessert goes.

This time around I also ordered one of the cakes that caught my eye from the glass display counter.

This is the Tower Chocolate Double Cheese. It’s a tiny cake about the size of two stacked Tiffany boxes – half of it contains their famous cheesecake and it’s topped with a layer of chocolate mousse. The entire shebang is then drizzled with chocolate sauce, a piece of their kitchen-made chocolate and a maraschino cherry.

It’s really quite good and reminds me of why Peppers Cafe used to be the king of cakes – if you wanted one, that’s where you go in Sibu. πŸ™‚

  1. Loved the cheesecakes here till I go sick of them – students would always buy for me whatever the occasion was. But these look great – must drop by and try one of these days.

I did not like the jelly pisang here – too sour for my liking. Maybe they used strawberry jelly – perhaps they should try cherry. In the old coffee shop days, we called it cherry pisang…and not jelly, so I don’t know whether they used cherry-flavoured jelly…or it was just a case of bad pronunciation. LOL!!!!

      • Heh! There was a point in time when I used to help my mom make cheesecakes – a very creamy version using Philadelphia cheese with a cookie crust bottom to hold it together.

I loved that so much that I ate a huge chunk daily and I got sick of it too. πŸ™‚

          • Haha! I know what you mean…but after some time has passed, it’ll taste great again.

I also remember eating this “pie” made with layers of cream crackers and luncheon meat.

I got really sick of it at one point but I’m craving for it right now. πŸ™‚

          • Oh, the new place?

            I haven’t been there before! πŸ™‚

I have heard mixed reviews about it though – some people say it’s good, some say it’s mediocre, some say it’s downright awful.

I’ll see for myself when I go back home next time. Cheers! πŸ˜€

    • Yeah, it was the only place to get a proper cheesecake before Secret Recipe opened up.

Either that or make one yourself. Coz the other local bakeries can’t make it as creamy and soft. The other place would be Premier Hotel, that’s the alternate option.Heh.

Oh, that’s coz you already tried the REAL jelly pisang back in the days. I wished I could have tried that. πŸ™‚

    • Yup, I loved to cook when I was a kid too. I would help my mom in the kitchen, making a proper cheesecake and pretend to have a picnic in the backyard where there are trees. Heh! πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, it’s the only place for good cheesecakes back before Secret Recipe opened this year. πŸ™‚

The other local bakeries make the crumbly “cheesecake” that doesn’t require refrigeration. Tanahmas makes the proper creamy ones you need to chuck in the fridge. πŸ˜€

However, a lot of people are going to Secret Recipe for their cakes now since it opened.

    • Heh! Yup, it affects a wide range of neurotransmitters – from dopamine to serotonin and even some anandamide, which is a cannabinoid similar to THC.

However, I have never felt that kind of “good feelings” from eating chocolate…not even with the higher cacao content chocolates (50% and above).

I’m glad it works for you though! πŸ™‚

I love eating cheesecake too! πŸ˜€

    • Heh! Nice one bro! πŸ™‚

I bet it would taste even better fresh from the oven, but then you have to time your visit just right…before they cool it and chuck it in the fridge.

I can imagine it being a hot instead of cold cake. πŸ˜€

    • Hello there Jit Ming!

Yup, I really liked the presentation too – it’s what caught my eye in the first place. πŸ™‚

I was there only for drinks but when I saw it, I decided to eat it and see how it tastes like. Heh.

    • Yup, it’s delicious! You remember those KFC dessert cups that they used to sell?

I can’t remember when they discontinued it but it was still available when I was a teenager.

It’s jelly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

That’s kinda what this tastes like but much better – the shaved ice, the evaporated milk, the banana. πŸ™‚

Haha! Yeah, I cropped it really short and spiked it up. Try next time and see if it hurts? πŸ˜‰

Yup, there’s several places that’s really good. I personally like Aho mee sapi, and a kampua stall in Pedada (everyone has their favorite).

Ruby Restaurant is great too – Arthur will bring you around for all the awesome food! πŸ˜€

      • Haha! Yeah, actually if there’s cheap flights around that time I might come back too. I’m heading to Bali for Christmas but I’m thinking of going back before that. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, you won’t go wrong with Tanahmas cakes and desserts. Peppers Cafe is the place people get cakes before Secret Recipe opened up a branch earlier this year in Sibu.

However, Peppers Cafe has been around for decades and their cheesecakes is still as good as I remember eating as a teenager. I still love their cheesecakes. Heh!

Buzz me if you’re headed down to Sibu, I don’t mind going back again. πŸ˜€
