Running around like a headless chicken

running around like a headless chicken

This idiom is actually quite accurate. My aunt was slaughtering chickens yesterday and I thought it was pretty interesting so I wanted to try it out myself. However, when I slit the chicken’s throat, I did it rather enthusiastically and nearly took off my own thumb with it. -_-

how to kill a chicken

Basically, you’re supposed to dump the chicken into a bucket after you kill it coz it thrashes around quite violently. I didn’t manage to coz my hands were slick with blood and I accidentally let the chicken go. I swear, I didn’t do that just to see if it would run around like a headless chicken. smirk

plucking chickens

Anyway, the chicken sorta flapped around all over the place when I *unintentionally* let it go. It was messy. I damn near decapitated the chicken with a very eager hand behind the knife but it still lived. It lives! Well, kinda. I finally caught it and dropped it into the bucket where it was soaked in hot water and plucked of its feathers.

I didn’t do much after seeing if the idiom was true though.

My mom said: Stop clucking around – if you’re not going to help and you’re just going to make a mess, go away.

I went away. action

    • Haha! That *is* how they kill chickens.

…at least in non large commercial breeding farms.

This was done coz with CNY approaching, people don’t actually want to prepare dressed chicken coz of the high demand so it’s DIY. πŸ™‚

    • It was quite interesting actually.

Okay, at the risk of sounding like that sociopath, it was quite funny.

I did not know that a chicken would have so much energy after it was practically decapitated. πŸ˜€

  1. Lols something happened at my brothers CHRISTIAN camp by the beach! ppl must have thought it was some witch craft camp >_<" I've killed and plucked a chicken before. Home grown. Funny that I never felt too attached to them but it was fun while it lasted and they had a good life so time for me to have a full tummy^^

    • Interesting!

Hey, but Christians eat chickens unless you’re Catholic then you don’t eat meat on Fridays.

Yeah, it is quite interesting eh?

Funny thing was one of the chickens was pregnant and there were egg yolks (mini eggs) inside her. πŸ˜€

  2. Dude, I did that to a pigeon once, back in the old days. It took off and never came back… I was hoping it would fly and dropped like a rock, but it kept on going, needless to say, mom was pretty upset, that goes the dinner.

    • You slit a pigeon’s throat?

They’re pretty hard to catch right? I know people shoot them with BB guns.

Not sure how commercial pigeons are done in though.

      Well, interesting experiement. πŸ˜€

    • I still maintain that my original idea was much better.

I have a lot of the original “thunder king” – 1″ diameter, about half a foot long – a real firecracker, so to speak.

I figured if you’re going to kill the chicken anyway, why not tie the firecracker to the throat and let it go. It’s no less inhumane coz those things (not chai lei, these are like M-80s) will decapitate the chicken.

…at least I think it would coz some kid was playing with it and it blew up in his hand – took several fingers off and a chicken’s neck ain’t that much bigger than that.

I was totally outvoted. Coz of the mess and you wouldn’t know where the chicken will go.

Fair enough. PETA will have *my* head for that. πŸ˜‰

    • I still maintain that it was slippery and blood got all over my hands and I couldn’t put it in the bucket in time. πŸ˜‰

Hey, now that I come to think of it…puts a totally new spin on the term “bucket list”. πŸ˜€

    • …but that’s how you kill a chicken if you’re not a huge commercial breeder.

The people who sell the chickens do it the same way, but they wouldn’t do it this time coz they’re busy coz it’s CNY. πŸ˜€

The free range organic dressed chicken you see probably goes through the same process.

    • I thought it was interesting coz I had *another* idea for the chickens.

Messier, but more entertaining than just slitting the chicken’s neck.

Aside to PETA types: Please direct hate mail to /dev/null

      It was fun.

      …and educational. πŸ˜€
