I broke my tooth!

broken teeth

I’ve been having trouble with one of my molars for a while now – it really hurts to chew but the pain suddenly went away one day so I thought it was fine.

intramuros

I was eating dinner at a local fast food restaurant in Intramuros, Manila where we had spent the day when I suddenly felt something crack inside my mouth. (!)

My initial thought was that it’s probably a stray bone, and I didn’t feel any pain so I ponderously chewed while attempting to spit the foreign object out. It looked harmless enough at first sight, until I ran my tongue along my left lower jaw and felt a hole with sharp jagged edges.

I have chipped my tooth! πŸ™

I thought I’ll just get it fixed and since there wasn’t any pain, I figured I’ll just use the right side of my teeth to do the usual job of grinding food into manageable mush to swallow.

Unfortunately, about half an hour later, I felt a tingling sensation – the nerve endings in my gums are exposed!

That’s not too bad either, but later as we caught a cab back to the hotel I started to feel the onset of a headache of epic proportions. I used to suffer from migraines but it doesn’t have the characteristic warning signs of an impending one – it’s sensitivity to light for me.

I didn’t think much of it until I got a better look at my teeth. I was complaining about a headache of mysterious origin and suddenly it occurred to us that it could be due to the broken tooth. I don’t know if it’s infected or the massive migraine that I’m currently having is due to the exposed raw nerve endings on my gum but I’ve never had one this bad before.I just feel like puking, crawling into bed and curling up in a fetal position.

I am very thankful to Maestro Smiles of Cinnaminson that they cured both my teeth and pain. They are focused and dedicated for providing exceptional family and cosmetic dentistry services. They provide both restorative and preventive maintenance dentistry services for their patients.

    • Thanks Jess! πŸ™‚

My teeth are already very messed up, I think I’ll just wait for a bit, a dentist is a bit low on my priority of stuff to do now – I have much more important financial commitments, and I’m already used to living with a lot of messed up organs.

I’ll probably go back home to do fix it if the migraines don’t go away, two birds with one stone thing, visit my dad and grandma as well. πŸ˜€

  1. I agreed with Jess. That happened to me last year and I waited a while to seek treatment. It lead me to a severe gum infection and developed a TMD problem. My jaw was locked for more than 6 months along with the pain and a swollen face. It took me a whole year to get that tooth fixed (I had a root canal treatment after the infection is gone and installed a crown). I lost a total of 15 lbs and many sleepless nights.

    • Lockjaw! Wow that sounds serious. 😑

I don’t have dental though, and right about now, it’s very low on my list of things to do.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience man.

I’m actually quite used to living with stuff like this so I guess I’ll let it slide for a while…too many commitments this month.

      Cheers mate! πŸ™‚

  2. Oh dear! I hope you’re all right now. If it’s causing any pain, massage the back of your hand in between the knuckles. That will relieve the pain…but you need to go and see a dentist to have a look at it soonest. Come back to Sibu? I can take you to a good one. I hear it is very very expensive in KL. Hope your migraine’s gone now… Take care there, buddy.

    • Yeah, it’s expensive in Singapore and KL too – the migraine still comes and goes but I’m okay with it, I hear people can get used to just about anything. I can anyway.

The Sibu idea sounds good. I’ll do that if it gets worse.

      Cheers buddy! πŸ™‚

    • Indeed it is, it’s years of smoking meth that caused this massive tooth problems. My teeth are unsightly.

Oh well, I’m used to it, this has been going on for several months and I’m still alive. πŸ™‚

I’ll probably wait for a while and get it fixed if it gets worse, there’s a lot of commitments I need to meet this month and next, so I’ll let it slide for a while.

    • Heh! It has nothing to do with the fast food – it’s just the straw that broke the camels back, that teeth has been giving me huge problems for a long time. πŸ™‚

  3. You better drop everything and pay a visit to the dentist. My second molar tooth had chipped off once and trust me, it was no joke handling the pain; it only went off after the doctor refilled it.

So, yeah, I agree with everyone. Make a trip to the dentist to prevent unnecessary problems later on. =)

    • Thanks for the kind comments Ciana! πŸ™‚

The chances of me seeing a dentist this month or next is pretty low, have a lot of commitments right about now. This is nothing, I’ve lived with worse.

I hope these are not famous last words. Haha!

  4. Dude, knowing you, your sadistic side really enjoy the bone chilling pain, I know it. But a couple days is good enough, get it fixed bro.

    • Well, I like the pain of the tooth but I don’t like the migraines that comes with it.

Heh! You know me well bro.

I’ll just wait on the fixing part, probably do it when I go back to Sibu, it’s not a big deal.

…except for the migraines, but I have meds for that. πŸ™‚

    • Hey bro, I was about to! πŸ™‚

Haha! However, I couldn’t take a good shot though, totally forgot about it during the day when I was out and it isn’t clear in incandescent light.

I’ll take a shot when I go back home in a couple of days and post it up on the sixthseal.com FB page – make it an exclusive there, that FB page is supposed to contain “extras” to supplement this blog.

    • Yeah, unfortunate, that it happened during a holiday but it isn’t that bad until the migraines comes on.

Thanks for the support bro! πŸ™‚

  5. better buy a local analgesic pain reliever an off the counter medication like i am taking now should do wonders until you get to a dentist. buy some PONSTAN mefenemic 500 mg. take it once a day till you get to a docotr. you dont need a prescription for this you can buy it over the counter.

welcome to the phlippines brother, so sorry to hear about your tooth. hope this makes everything well for you until you get to see treatment for the actual cause of pain.

    • Thanks for the suggestion mate! πŸ™‚

I don’t take Ponstan, it’s a little weak for me in terms of pain relief. I have more effective prescription pain killers.

Cheers for the help though bro! I appreciate that but I’ll just wait until I go back to my hometown to do it, I can visit my family and grandma at the same time.

No worries mate and thanks again for everything and the welcome! πŸ˜€

My teeth is horrible, especially now that I have a chunk missing and it’s exposing my nerve endings. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, my dSLR ran out of battery so I used my phone instead, which was also running low on battery – this was the Intramuros day, haven’t charged both for a looong time. πŸ™‚

  7. I had to have my whole tooth removed when this happened to me. I made the mistake of waiting too long before seeing a dentist. He said severe tooth infections can and do spread to the brain and cause severe headaches and even coma or death if you’re unlucky so PLEASE go get it looked at ASAP. (or at least take some goddamn antibiotics)

    Reply
    • Crap! It can spread to the brain?

Okay, I’ll go get it checked out as soon as I can. 😑

      That’s really scary.

I’m taking antibiotics, though it’s for the flu and not for this. πŸ™‚
