How I won SGD 1 in Singapore

singapore pools

Heh! I did this during my first trip to Singapore to see my mom, there’s a supermarket near my sister’s place that has an outlet for legalized state betting *right inside*, of particular interest being football and motorsports.

This is different from the common lotteries that most countries have, with much lower odds compared to online betting sites as a form of taxation. I found the top online slots developers here, and have loved playing the online casino games. It was the start of BPL and I bought SGD 10 for West Ham to win at 2.10 odds. I won this one, getting me SGD 11 nett (after deducting the original SGD 10 – the total winnings was SGD 21). It’s basically winning a pack of smokes, just did it for fun.

I went for a random K-League match after collecting my winnings the next day while grocery shopping, also with a SGD 10 bet for a return of SGD 28.50.

There are various permutations possible – total goals, HT/FT, etc with corresponding odds (highest I’ve seen is 300 – which will net you SGD 3,000 with SGD 10). The minimum bet is SGD 5.

I lost this one, and stopped playing – the queue was wayyyyy too long and I just wanted to see how Singapore Pools works.

…and that is how I won SGD 1 in Singapore. 🙂

    • No worries bro, you just have to factor in the buy-in. 🙂

I only bet twice so here’s the breakdown:

      West Ham
SGD 10 bet, won SGD 21. Nett win is SGD 11 coz the initial SGD 10 bet is out of my pocket.

      Winnings: SGD 11.

      K League match
      SGD 10 bet, lost.

      Thus SGD 11 – SGD 10 = SGD 1.

      Cheers mate! 😀

  1. Gee! Looks like that prim and proper no-nonsense communist-like republic is Las Vegas in the making! Hmmm…you always lose at the end like it’s some kind of jinx. Don’t swing while you’re winning – quit while you’re ahead.

    • Heh! Well, I reckon it’s a good thing to drive out organized crime, keeping the syndicates out of the game and earning taxes from it.

I only bet twice coz I wanted to have a feel of how it goes – they use scratch pads much like Sports Toto over here.

Yup, that’s basically what I did, stopped after the second bet and was content with the SGD 1 win, it’s for fun anyway.

      Cheers buddy! 😀

It was the start of BPL so I reckon I’ll try out the Singapore Pools sports betting. I think they’ve legalized it for quite a long time already, just never had the chance to check it out.

This was *inside* a supermarket, there’s a long line of people, mostly for lottery though.

Heh! Cheers, I was just doing it for fun, SGD 1 is better than nothing. 😀

  2. lol singapore has legalised football betting since i started working way back in ’99 for s-league. i remember it was big news. it used to be called score, unsure if it’s operated by sp in those early days. i’ve been playing off and on but the odds are lower, you noticed that too huh. i think i broke even over the years. anyway ‘grats man.

    • Wow, it’s been around for so long? I didn’t know that! I thought it was introduced in the last couple of years. Thanks for the info bro! 🙂

Yup, the odds are noticeably lower compared to online betting sites, thought that’s one of the ways Singapore Pools taxes punters, but that can’t be all, since they’ve got to stay reasonably competitive so I’m guessing it’s the difference and the numbers game e.g. the traditional way, payouts has gotta be less than earnings.

      Thanks mate! 😀

    • Haha! Indeed, I just didn’t want to queue up for this, you wouldn’t believe the line at this outlet, plenty of (mostly) older pensioner types thronging the place for the lottery, although one uncle did ask me what I was planning to bet on since I was looking at the various permutations they allow on an interactive kiosk. 🙂

Oh yeah, I still remember those ice cream sandwiched in a slice of bread on Orchard Road right after office hours, that was a good decade ago though, are they still around?

      Cheers bro! 😀

  3. yes.. Yes, that is how you do it, feed the Devil just bit by bit, little by little. Don’t feed it too much. Resist the temptation. Control the temptation. Yes, goto Fraser Hill instead of the other ‘highland’. And oh, don’t forget to pickup some deodorant again during the next grocery shopping trip…

  4. Aahh… the convenience of legalized football betting. I ‘donated’ quite a bit of cash my self during the last Euro tournament. There was an outlet just 5 mins walk from where i stayed. Lol

    • Yeah, it’s a long queue but I must admit, it’s very convenient to have legalized football betting…let’s the government tax the punters too.

Heh! Sorry to hear that bro. It’s the rules of the game, win some, lose some.

      Cheers bro! 🙂

    • I’m actually RM 2.51 richer, that’s the exchange rate I got. Haha!

Hmm…yeah, there’s no sure win situations, there’s always a joker in the deck, so to speak. There was a Brazil – China friendly that is pretty much a sure win though but the odds are 1.01.

That means…if you bet SGD 10, you will have a nett winning of SGD 0.10. 10 cents for 10 dollars, gotta bet a huge amount to see any significant winnings but there’s also a possibility of losing coz it’s a friendly. 🙂

That was the oddest match I’ve seen though. Results 8-0 to Brazil.

      Cheers Constance! 😀

  5. Bro I bet online…. no need to queue.. lol
there are many options as well..(eg. asian handicap)
I play on the safe side like double chance but the return rate is 0.2
the winning ratio is less but it almost guarantee 80% win……

    • Heh! Yeah, I used to bet online too, stopped dy.

The Singapore Pools has a surprising number of options too, they do Asian Handicap also, total goals, Over/Under etc.

Yup, that’s like the Brazil – PRC friendly that was on – the odds are 1.01 meaning if you bet SGD 100, you’ll only get SGD 1 in return. Haha. It’s a pretty solid bet though (results were 8-0) but the odds are crap and there’s always the chance of unexpected results in friendlies.

      Good luck bro! 😀

  6. I don’t do betting but bookies here pay out including your initial payment. So Instead of SGD 21 you could have got SGD 31,lol but I guess each county has it’s own style.

    • Interesting! Where are you based at bro?

I’ve never heard of a system like that – returning the buy-in (initial payment), it’s a rather unusual way of going about things.

      Thanks for the information! 🙂

      • oh yeah… those ‘bookies’ Hah! The payout is great, but if you lose, they will take your car, house, wife and along with a couple of your fingers…..

        • You mean they’re here in Malaysia too?

I’ve never heard of this system e.g. returning your buy-in. I remember using a local bookie when I was working in Kuching, Asian Handicap, I don’t remember them using this system of paying back your initial bet.

I don’t know how it works in KL though, never used a local bookie, it’s always online when I used to play. 🙂

    • Heh! Well, it’s a numbers game, I usually win if I bet small amounts. 🙂

      It’s 50:50 anyway, or around that…

Oh, not for football though, some people can get much higher winning percentages if they study the game. I couldn’t be bothered, was just doing it for fun.

      Cheers! 😀

    • Heh! Yeah, SGD 1 is better than nothing.

…although technically I used the original SGD 11 to buy cigarettes.

Those are expensive in Singapore if you convert. Heh.

      Cheers! 🙂

  7. nah..singapore pools’ odds are deemed as `sucker odds’, serious punters would never go to them. Any online bookmakers offer much better odds

    Reply
    • Yeah, that’s what I figured too – the odds are wayyyyy lower than what it should be, compared to online betting odds.

True that, but I wasn’t betting seriously, was just doing it for fun, seeing how Singapore Pools does it.

I must agree, the odds are horrible.

      Cheers mate! 🙂

  8. Hahaha. This one is the one inside Fair Price in Eastpoint Mall. I buy my bet often here too when I go Singapore kekeke. I remembered I once won on scoring betting 2-1 on Man Utd vs Liverpool, which got me like 5.0 odd.

    • Yup, that’s the one! It’s near my sister’s place, I go here to buy groceries and the outlet is just located inside the supermarket, which I found unusual. 🙂

Nice! I wanted to go for total goals 8 and 9+ on the Brazil – China friendly when I was there the second time but I didn’t bet in the end. The odds for that was 90, and they really got 8 goals in, so for a SGD 10 bet, you’ll get SGD 900.

I would prefer to go for total goals than score prediction, the former allows more margin for error. Heh!

      Cheers mate! 🙂

  9. Haha, at least you won yourself a pack of smokes. I do not have such lucks in betting or gambling, hence refraining myself from such activities. Only gamble for fun during CNY 🙂

    • Heh! Yeah, it’s a numbers game, if I bet small amounts, chances are I’ll win e.g. in a casino. The trick is not to be greedy and stop when you’ve won, even if it’s a little.

I gamble for fun during CNY too, since I’m the oldest now I’m the dealer (used to be my uncle) and would occasionally give bonuses like “double payouts” to my younger cousins. It’s family after all. 🙂

      Cheers mate!

  10. all this betting seems pretty cool i had a college roommate that made supplement allowance from online BPL betting. But all this odds and numbers seem to perplex me. care to shed some light? heh

    Reply
    • Nice! Your roommate managed to actually win enough to supplement his income? That’s quite extraordinary! 🙂

Well, basically over here, Asian Handicap is the common variant – you choose one team and goals are “conceded” to the superior team (how many depends on how strong the playing teams are).

Anyway, for the bets I made above, they’re Team-Draw-Team bets, so it’s a 33% chance, if you discount other factors like research etc.

      The odds are calculated thus:

      West Ham @ 2.10

It means if you put down SGD 10, you win SGD 21. Just multiply your bet with the odds e.g. SGD 10 x 2.10 = SGD 21.

      Cheers bro! 😀
