Waddap cuz

My cousin is here on a business trip and I had dinner with him to catch up. I actually just met him in Singapore a couple of weeks back, but that was just to pass him some stuff from my sister’s condo. It was about to rain so we didn’t have much time to talk.

poh poh
L-R: Mr. Poh, Mr. Poh.

Interesting fact:
My dad is the oldest son of my grandfather and I’m his youngest son.
My cousin’s dad is the youngest son of my granddad and he’s the oldest son.

Guess how far apart our ages are?

It’s surprisingly not far apart. He’s only older than me by *one year*.

…..

…….

………

…………

I wish!

I’m kidding. He’s 24 and I’m 31. That makes it a 7 year difference. My grandfather also beget 7 offspring, which is totally coincidental and has nothing to do with this at all.

Chirashi-Jyu
This is what I usually order when I have Japanese food nowadays. I’m a huge fan of unagi (eel) but due to my unhealthy diet I’ve taken to ordering this pretty consistently when I’m out. It’s assorted sashimi on sushi rice for RM 30.

chirashi jyu

I actually like this version – best I’ve had so far. The selling point was the fatty raw salmon – it’s creamy and delicious! They don’t serve coffee (boo) but however this place has a 4sq special where you can get a green tea ice cream for free when you check-in.

BTW, my cousin is single and available. Heh.

…and that concludes the Book of Numbers in my family scripture for now. πŸ˜‰

    • Haha! Thanks Kellie! πŸ™‚

Yeah, I’m really 31, born April 1981, during Cheng Beng (the day of cleaning graves and paying respects to the deceased for Chinese).

Heh! I get that a lot, people always say I look younger, guess it’s partly genetic coz my mom looks very young compared to her actual age. πŸ˜€

    • Heh! I thought it would be good as an appetizer of sorts before you head out to lunch bro. πŸ™‚

This was at Senjyu at BVII – my cousin was staying at Boulevard Hotel in Midvalley and he’s never been to the Bangsar/Telawi area so I brought him over.

      Cheers bro! πŸ™‚

  1. Well, if it’s any consolation, you don’t look older…and I would say that you may look younger even. Oh? He’s single and available? Hmmm… is he rich? LOL!!! Well, you are single too – and still available, aren’t you? Wink! Wink! LOL!!!!

Thanks Arthur, but I seriously doubt that. I’m starting to catch up with my age but good thing is the genetic predisposition, at least I have that on my side (plus side being this, negative ones being cancer prone – both my maternal and paternal grandfathers died of lung cancer and some others).

Oh well, C’est la vie! πŸ™‚

Yeah, my cousin is single AND available – nice guy, we used to play together as kids and we’re not that different age-wise – once you hit the 20’s most of it becomes the same anyway.

Haha! He works in Singapore so he’s earning a stronger currency, but you’ll have to ask him yourself about that. πŸ˜‰

LOL! Well, haha can I go for the “It’s Complicated” option? πŸ˜‰

Cheers buddy and have a great weekend! πŸ˜€

    • Heh! He’s a really nice guy, seriously, one of the cousins I’m closer with. Good looking too! πŸ˜‰

We have a couple of shared interests – I have quite a lot of cousins, one is living her dream of going to NZ on a work visa (how I wish I could do that too), we all meet up during Chinese New Year back in Sibu at my grandma’s place.

      It’s all good! πŸ™‚

      Have an awesome weekend buddy!

    • Heh! Yeah, being in the 30’s isn’t too bad, better than the chaotic live I had when I was in my early 20’s.

Yup, I usually order chirashi nowadays when I’m eating Japanese food too! I love sashimi and sushi and I don’t normally eat a lot of fish so I reckon it’ll be a healthy and delicious choice.

I used to eat a lot of unagi but nowadays I prefer something lighter on the palate.

      Cheers bro! πŸ™‚

  3. Not only does your cousin look young for his age, HB, you also look young for your age. Wouldn’t have guessed that you’re 31. =D

The best kick one can get from the Japanese cuisine is, I believe, the fresh, succulent sashimi. It’s alright if they don’t serve coffee since they already have the 4sq special. =)I didn’t know you fancied Japanese cuisine. Trust me, I’d have advised you to Kampachi’s Sunday brunch buffet before Equatorial KL closed down.

    Is suituapui’s hinting on something?

Yeah, I’m 31, it’s just genetics that makes me look younger – my mom doesn’t look her age at all, she could easily pass for 10 years younger. I guess I inherited that genome set from her.

My cousin seems to have similar genetic traits too – he looks younger than his age. I think it’s a great thing, I personally love looking younger than my age, I used to be a bit annoyed coz of the hassle in getting into raves, buying cigarettes and entering casinos but on the plus side looking younger is always good. πŸ™‚

Indeed! I love sashimi and I’ve switched from eating unagi don to chirashi since last year – it’s a great and healthy alternative that’s lighter on the palate and you can taste the raw fish instead of the overwhelming sauce they put on unagi. I still like eel though and I’ll certainly eat it sometimes when I go to a Japanese restaurant, but I’m in a phase where I almost consistently order chirasi now – sashimi on top of rice, I love the subtle yet rich texture of thickly sliced sashimi.

Yeah, I love Japanese food too, alas, too bad it closed down or it’ll be nice to head there for brunch! πŸ™‚

I was pleasantly surprised at the 4sq check-in special too, didn’t know they have that until I took a photo with my cousin and checked in.

Haha! suituapui is a good old friend from Sibu, he’s just kidding. He’s a really nice guy, I see him when I go back home, we live quite close together there – walking distance!

Have an awesome weekend Ciana! Cheers! πŸ˜€

      • Yeah, I agree with Ciana! πŸ™‚

Facebook keeps everyone together and it’s easier to communicate there despite everyone being in different places and countries.

Skype works great too if everyone has broadband – my parents use that to talk to my sis last time, and I think they still do, to get video feeds of my nephew and niece – their grandchildren. πŸ™‚

Supplemented with Whatsapp, where you can share photos, my sis sends the progress of my nephew growing up to my dad.

There’s a lot of ways to keep in touch, it doesn’t need to be physical, although that would be optimal, but it can always wait till Chinese New Year. πŸ˜€

Yeah, it’s hard to keep in touch sometimes. I must admit, there were a couple of times when I couldn’t make it, I’m still due for drinks with this cousin.

A lot of my cousins are scattered around so it’s difficult to catch up except over Chinese New Year – that’s when everyone meets up at my grandma’s place.

I would like to start meeting up more often though – it’s my deceased granddad that kept us all together, and now my grandma, God bless her.

We’re the new generation now, all adults from the early 20’s to early 30’s and it’s about time we start to make a tradition of catching up, the new extended family. πŸ™‚

Yeah, I understand, it can be hard sometimes due to everyone working in different places and countries, but hey, there’s always Chinese New Year!

Have an awesome weekend Eunice! πŸ˜€

    • Hello Charmaine! πŸ™‚

Yup, unagi is good for health too, eel has a very high high nutritional value – protein, vitamins and minerals, and the all important DHA. I love it too, and I’ll still order it once in a while.

It’s used to be my usual order every single time I go to a Japanese restaurant – I’ll look for unagi don! πŸ˜€

However, I started eating more sashimi and in turn chirasi don became my usual choice every time I go nowadays.

I love the lighter note on the palate, and it makes me think I’m eating healthier. HAHAHA

Of course, I love to experiment and try every dish on the menu to see if it’s good but when I’m feeling like I need a healthier meal, I’ll go for chirasi. I was tempted by a couple of the dishes that I don’t usually order on the menu, but I was full after the meal so I didn’t order more.

Haha! Yup, my cousin is good looking and he’s a nice guy to boot! πŸ˜€

I’ll introduce you next time he comes to Malaysia. πŸ˜‰

Cheers Charmaine and have a great weekend!

    • Heh! Thanks Eiling! πŸ™‚

Well, you never know, I could always introduce you two the next time he comes over. πŸ˜‰

It would be quite a feat he was really 1 year older than me coz between my dad and his dad, there are 5 other children than my deceased grandfather begat (unless I counted it wrong, but I’m pretty sure the total is 7).

I attribute it all to genes coz it certainly can’t be my lifestyle that makes me look young. If I had kept to a healthier lifestyle I guess I would be like my mom – looking a good decade younger than what I really am even at her age.

      Cheers Eiling! πŸ˜€
