Yip Chee May Big Bun and other interesting night market food

Yip Chee May Big Bun (RM 6)

yip chee may bao

Yap Chee May is a huge adult film star in Hong Kong back when I was a kid. She’s famous for her big boobs and this absurdly huge bun is named after her. Ong Kee Yap Chee May Big Bun is made in Taman Connaught, Cheras and pays tribute to the Category III Hong Kong star.

It’s a pau (Chinese meat filled bun) that’s supposed to be the size of the DDD breasts of Yip Chee May. At least, that’s the marketing spiel, I don’t know anyone who actually went up to measure her assets to make sure this conforms to the exact dimensions but it’s ginormous!

I found this at the local pasar malam and it’s a dinner plate sized egg and chicken filled bun that’s actually really yummy! There’s a lot of prime meat inside but one downside is that it also has the chicken bones attached so you have to eat it carefully.

This RM 6 big bao is so huge it’s a meal unto itself!

Chicken Floss Bread with Dried Meat + Egg (RM 3.50)

ba kua bun

It was a dinner cum stroll along the night market and we also found a stall selling Chinese burgers. I call them that coz everything is Asian – from Chinese style bakery bread to the strips of ba kua (pork jerky) and chicken floss inside.

I was a but puzzled as to how they’re going to put the egg into the fried bread…

…it turns out that it’s cooked on the same flat top surface before ba kua, cucumber slices and chicken floss is layered onto it.

It’s a Ramly burger, Chinese style! πŸ™‚

Taiwan style pancakes with sweet and savory fillings

taiwan crepe

You can choose everything from Taiwan sausage, slices of luncheon meat, pork floss etc from an array in front of you for a customized crispy pancake that you can eat while walking.

Golden Swallow durian

durians

It’s durian season again! Ling hasn’t tried the Golden Swallow durian that I like so much so I got one for her to try.

golden swallow

It’s RM 18/kg which is a bit steep and the durian I chose cost RM 30 for the beautiful single-seed-per-segment fruit. I can only find this from independent sellers at night markets and not from the durian buffet chains.

It tastes sweet and creamy – we shared one seed when it was opened and bought the rest back. There’s only a few but it’s a quality over quantity thing – if you want cheap durians with a lot of seeds and flesh, D24 is the way to go.

apricots

It was a good trip where we got RM 10 apricots (the same ones sell for RM 12.99 at supermarkets) but the best bit was still the Yip Chee May big bun.

It comes with a small sachet of chilli sauce too! The second largest pau I’ve ever seen – Sin Kwang Foochow Big Pau looks like a airplane landing strip compared to it. πŸ˜‰

It’s delicious and can be more than a handful for someone to finish in one sitting. smirk

    • Haha! Both of us managed to finish it! πŸ™‚

It’s really surprisingly good though – lots of meat inside, just not a big fan of the bones. You can’t eat it the traditional way e.g. biting into it.

  1. Walau Eh! So damn big pau! You are Hamsap Boy! (HB) Muahahahahahaha
I would suffocate myself if I stuff with this big boob pau. Was it yummilicious?
The current Raja Musang durians are getting hot and selling over RM60 each!
I tasted it and thumbs up!

    • Haha! Yup, the pau is gigantic! It’s ridiculous, a meal unto itself! πŸ™‚

It’s delicious though, very flavorful, although I wish they’ll take out the chicken bones.

It’s good meat though – drums and thigh meat.

Yeah, MSK is coming out, even seen it at out of the way places. Let’s see how this year’s crop fares. πŸ˜€

  2. wow, can you finish the bun by yourself? haha, i’ve seen that too during my last trip to KL and Rm6 is quite a good buy considering the size should be good enough for a meal πŸ˜›

    • I couldn’t! πŸ™‚

I finished it with my gf – we both ate it together, although I had most of it.

Yup, it’s *definitely* a meal – it’s large enough to make most people really full and there’s lot of meat inside.

      I reckon it’s a good buy too. πŸ˜€

  3. The Chinese burger looks really interesting.

I make bak kwa sandwiches after Chinese new year with left over bak kwa. I also make pork floss sandwiches for my kids. But never thought of combining the two with an egg! I gotta try this.

    • Yup, and it’s really quite delicious too! πŸ™‚

Nice! The first time I saw someone make ba kua sandwiches was when I was studying in Christchurch. I was 15 then and had to stay in a homestay – there were a Taiwanese brother-sister group taking up one room.

We made our own sandwiches with the provided bread on Sundays and they made me one with ba kua and pork floss from Taiwan! πŸ˜€

  4. I’ve always loved the big pao and, if I have a KitchenAid mixer at home, certainly wouldn’t mind having a shot doing it. But Yip Chee May? Did the boss, like, tell you why he named the bun as such?

Like Dead Cockroach, I’ve had such a meal before when I was with a friend in Subang Parade last year, and gosh, my stomach was about to explode at any minute. =/

    • I already knew who Yip Chee May is when I was a little kid. πŸ™‚

She’s the equivalent of Dolly Parton (who is more famed for her assets than her talent here) in Asia.

I think I watched one of her Category III films when I was 13 or so – there’s a place outside our high school that rents videotapes (VHS was the only option then – LD was available but VCD was a couple of years away, not to mention DVD) to high school kids.

The big bun itself it quite good though – well deserving of the moniker but more than just a nifty name to sell paos it actually tastes good! πŸ˜€

    • Yup! It’s surprisingly cheap for so much meat! πŸ™‚

Haha! Yeah, she was very famous back in the days. I was a teenager when I first heard of her.

I only heard of this big bun when I went to pasar malam though.

  5. What part Malaysia this place is located? Would like to try those big buns for sure. Big boobs are not big deal in states where lot of women have it for sure even my teachers also in schools. Ha Ha.

    • It’s in Cheras but you can get it at night markets like SS2 also. πŸ™‚

Yeah, it’s not a big deal it’s just marketing and brand recognition.

Yip Chee May was famous back then for that, just like Dolly Parton. Heh!

    • It’s amazing, the size! πŸ™‚

It can be larger or smaller though, there’s not a lot of quality control.

I like pasar malam for the same reasons too! A lot of fun! πŸ˜€

  7. When i was in college, Yip Chee May used to be our favourite. We would buy that and share with my dorm mates. Those were the days.. Now I realised I have not had that for ages!!

    • Nice! I think I can eat a whole big bun if I’m hungry though. πŸ™‚

The chicken filling is very nice. I’ll love to have it again.

It’s actually quite delicious, though it would be just a marketing gimmick. πŸ˜€
