I found Finnish fireworks for sale in KL!

jewel of the nile

This is the first fireworks post of Chinese New Year! Well, it’s close to CNY anyway. I found this fountain / cake hybrid at the local market at a list price of RM 28 each. It’s called Niilin Jalokivet (Jewel of the Nile) and the quality of the packaging is like none I’ve seen before!

The wrap details the optimal viewing distance (30 meters), minimum viewing distance (10 meters) and even how long it lasts! It says to *expect 20 seconds* of fireworks from this tall fountain and aerial repeater from Finland. I found the amount of information very impressive.

I got this at the local market. I’ve always found KL to be a bit dry in terms of fireworks and firecrackers compared to my hometown of Sibu. I managed to get 2 of this for RM 30, making it RM 15 each. There are firework cakes (multi-shot aerial barrages) listed for RM 780 (!!!) which I can get for RM 250 in Sibu.

I also saw the cheap generic 8888 Chinese firecrackers (usually RM 8 – got some during CNY eve) which doesn’t have the finish and sheer girth of the RM 200+ premium Chinese firecrackers selling for RM 25 here. The stuff here is 3x the price of what we pay in Sibu retail stalls (comparing apples to apples).

I just wanted to let it off for my better half though, since CNY is coming soon, so I lit one across the road and another one closer to the house, which toppled. Luckily the Niilin Jalokivet doesn’t shoot up very high – 12 feet at it’s max.

There’s a center tube acting as a fountain and 8 + 2 tubes surrounding it which shoots up balls of flaming fire and whistling sparks respectively. It reminds me of the smaller version of the popular old perennial Desert at Night.

It’s not too bad, but we’re used to paying much lower prices. It was still a good find though, the fireworks display was pretty awesome, especially the first one I let off, which didn’t topple over halfway. Haha!

I just let it off last night after dinner. I always feel like Chinese New Year is around the corner when I start playing with fireworks. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! πŸ™‚

I hardly ever see fireworks in KL and even if I do, it’s just soooo expensive compared to Sibu. People here are paying at least 3 times the price we pay back home!

It’s still fun to start and let off a couple for my dear though!

    • I was quite surprised at the prices over here! πŸ™‚

I did call to ask a couple of years back and a friend of mine quoted prices that were (frankly) ridiculous to people living in Sibu.

I guess there are higher “maintenance” costs over here. πŸ˜‰ Nice, I always get some for CNY, usually something new, got daylight fireworks last year (smoke bombettes in an aerial barrage cake – you can’t see them at night, thus the moniker “daylight fireworks”).

    • Haha! Don’t worry, I won’t do anything that stupid. πŸ™‚

The prices over here are 3 times more expensive as what we’re used to paying in Sibu to boot. I’ve never brought fireworks here either, it will never pass customs since it’s classified as an explosive (1.4G at least) and needs proper clearance forms.

It’s just some interesting Finnish ones I wanted to get for my better half, to start off the CNY season.

      Thanks for the concern though!

  1. Yeah STP said don’t bring back to Sibu. Set them off in KL and I will bring pop corns to watch you play. I always think of you whenever I see fireworks anywhere. Kena psycho already! LOL

I plan to buy cheap fireworks to keep and shoot all the noisy crows who hang on the street cables and trees opposite my house. They crow out noisily but still need to drop their feces onto my cars and gates! Bluek! I plan to shoot and scare them away as they have good memories!

    • I don’t have any more – like I said in the post, I only got those 2. πŸ™‚

I just wanted to let them off for my better half to see, unfortunately, I didn’t buy any more since it’s so expensive compared to back home. I wouldn’t be as idiotic as to bring them back to Sibu – it’ll never pass customs and it’ll take a person who’s very bad in math who even tries. Haha!

They’re asking for RM 40 for a simple 25-shot fireworks cake that costs RM 15 in Sibu, also at a stall like this (much cheaper if you buy it before, or from other sources e.g. not public displays like this, which incurs misc costs).

It’s really so expensive over here, you guys pay 3x the amount we do, retail for retail (comparing stalls and stalls, which have the same upkeep costs). It’s much cheaper to buy from Sibu, there’s a lot more variety and you can get the really big fireworks cakes which weighs 30 kg and more.

My biggest one last year was a single 30 kg fireworks cake, that wouldn’t even fit in the check-in baggage allowance. πŸ˜‰

Nice! You mean like Roman candles which shoots out balls of fire from a stick that you can hold in your hand? I guess that’ll be good for crows! Good hunting!

  2. good grief you’re early! and boy, do i love fireworks (but don’t you already know that! HAHA) don’t you feel like you’re kinda ruining the “surprise” for yourself if you try them out early? hehe. i’ve had the fondest memories all tied back to fireworks ((((‘:

and yes, archives are back for your sake! lol. (and i put myself through coding hell all over again – for the last time!! lol!)

    • Yeah, I love fireworks too! πŸ™‚

They’re really awesome, I remember the days before the fireworks ban, I was really small back then (less than 7 years old since it was in Kuching and I only moved to Sibu for Primary 1) and my dad would teach me how to let fireworks off safely.

Those are the fondest memories I have too! Me and my dad below the flat we lived at in Kuching, and he was trying to teach me how to safely light fuses and how to look away even when snapping those “string firecrackers” (remember them? you pull the string and the green bit in the middle snaps and explodes).

Nice! Yeah, I keep on putting off my own blog redesign but I really have to get cracking soon! You’re doing a good job, I just keep procrastinating!

Hmm…that’s a good question. Well, my answer is no since it’s only 10 days till Chinese New Year! I just realized that! It’s just slightly more than a week before CNY comes around so I don’t think it’s too early.

Plus, I just got a couple to show my dear (her parents came out to watch too). I saw these rockets for sale (the kind which is like a 3″ aerial display shell but much smaller) but the price was 7 for RM 140. We can get proper 5″ display shells for much less than that in Sibu! I was honestly taken aback when they showed me the brochure – the fireworks cakes that sells for RM 250 back home goes for RM 780 here.

It’s good to get the CNY mood going though! We also went CNY shopping, got a lot of snacks and other goodies to bring home! Have an awesome one yourself!

It’s been one year since I’ve played with fireworks. Haha!

I play with them every single year during CNY.

    • Nice! I still have one from last year! πŸ™‚

I’m going to buy 2 more – I usually let them off during the eve before reunion dinner, first day morning and of course during 12 am.

I always thought the Hokkiens celebrate it on the 7th day e.g. the Tian Gong day. Happy CNY!

We usually get the China made ones over here, especially with the fireworks cakes, it’s usually Sunshine (a very large fireworks company) stock. However, in Sibu, they bring in the new stuff every year – “new” meaning “one year behind” as they import in June/July to make it easier to go through customs. However, I have seen “new” as in “this season” fireworks in small batches though!

That’s the ones I usually get. Happy CNY Sean!

    • Hello Tony! πŸ™‚

I don’t have their contact, they just sell at the wet market. I don’t think the price is reasonable – it’s 3x more expensive that what we pay in Sibu, Sarawak.

As an indicator, a 108-shot Sunshine cake goes for RM 780, which is an incredibly ridiculous price for us (we pay less than RM 200, RM 250 if it’s at retail shops like this).

        • Yeah, I know what you mean! πŸ™‚

I saw the most common 108-shot Sunshine diagonal cake – looks like this (\__/) which I personally get for RM 80 when I buy early and in bulk – and it’s listed as RM 780 here!

However, the person did say that I can suggest a price, which means he’s willing to bargain, but not down to much. If the original list price is already so high, there’s not much room to move around in.

Yeah, I suggest going to your regular sources if they’re good. Cheers bro!

    • I got dy! πŸ™‚

I just came back with (hopefully) my last batch! Got a huge 128 shot fireworks cake, my best display grade one this year.

I’m a bit tempted to go out CNY eve and get some from the one in town though….

You got yours dy bro? The one at Farley is expensive, try the one at Sing Kwong (the mall in town, not the one far away) – it’s the same boss, but the latter sells it cheaper.
