3 cooks from 3 stalls serving 3 types of food

This is my Top 3 favorite food from just one single coffee shop – D.U. Cafe in Kota Damansara…and it’s all done by locals, no foreigners. smirk

1. Penang Popiah

popiah

Popiah can best be described as a Chinese burrito. Instead of tortilla wraps, a thin wheat paper is used. Finely grated turnips is the main filling, this one has shredded omelet, small pieces of diced chicken with jicama (bengkuang) and chopped peanuts for a bit of crunch.

If he’s in a generous mood, he’ll add 2 cups of pai tee (which they call Singapore popiah – technically, it’s Nyonya cuisine) to your order free of charge. It’s quite filling and the secret home made chilli sauce is numbingly superb.

2. Nasi Lemak Panas

fried chicken

This stall can fry up a new batch of chickens in just 10 minutes. When there’s no cuts of chicken that I like, I’m prepared to wait that long for a new batch. Plus, you can’t beat the taste of fried chicken just out of bubbling hot oil.

RM 5 is a total steal for this – there’s also a fried sunny side up egg included in your order, in addition to the usual accoutrements of nasi lemak. The sambal is awesome too, and if you’re hungry just add RM 0.50 for an extra serving of rice.

3. Pork Rind CKT

pork crackling CKT

Not many places serves char kueh tiaw with pork crackling e.g. the crispy skin of a deep fried pig. This one does. They also load your CKT with heaps of finely diced garlic and chilli, making it taste so *intense* that it’s the most seasoned CKT I’ve ever had.

They’re generous with their clams and lap cheong (Chinese sausage) too. Too bad they don’t have prawns but the pleasant surprise of crunching into the melt-in-you-mouth pork rind more than makes up for it!

    • Yeah, they’re all good! πŸ™‚

I particularly like this place for the variety of stalls and the great food…also it’s open quite late, and general quality is heaps better than the nearby Neighborhood Cafe, which only virtue is serving size and 24 hours.

    • It’s near Giza mall! πŸ™‚

There’s a lot of shophouses around there, it marks the start of Jalan PJU 5/10 (at the side where you turn in from Neighbourhood Food Court). It’s very hard to find parking though but the food is good there.

There’s also a Grouper Fish Head stall that we’ve wanted to try but it was raining at the time.

BTW, if you come in from the other side, you’ll see Burger King but it’s a one way road so you have to turn right at either Starbucks or later at Kayu Nasi Kandar.

  1. I love the 3 food you mentioned.. Penang popiah, yeshhh ! I don’t know about you (or others), but I love mine with “banjir” gravy ! I usually buy from the pasar malam at my mum’s place, there’s this stall which sells the biessttt Penang popiah in the world, and after wrapping up all the popiah, before sealing the box, I asked her to “flood” the popiah with the “ju hu char” gravy.. Yes, “flooded” !
Nasi lemak, yepp, can’t go wrong with that one..Nasi lemak panas with fried chicken and some cockles, yummzzz..But the one I love most would be from the mamak tables, nasi lemak (kosong) bungkus though..
Ooohh, ckt !! I love ckt !! I will usually order mine mixed with noodles (more noodles, lesser kuey teow), more raw cockles and pork lard “chue yau char”.. Heaven !!

    • Haha! Me too! πŸ™‚

I like to banjir the kuah but the problem is you have to eat it *right away* if you do that. I’ll order it that way if I’m eating there, but if I’m going to tapao, I’ll just get it the regular way, or else it’ll be soggy when I get home.

Oh, I know what you mean, I don’t like the nasi lemak kosong at the tables…coz there’s nothing inside (and it’s already cold)! I like my nasi lemak with a lot of meat – chicken drumstick, sotong, beef etc but I can’t eat it plain.

Yeah, I love pork crackling too, not many places have it nowadays, especially the crunchy bits that’s large enough to go on top of KL style Hokkien Char Mee.

Haha! I just go for the convenience but the food is good. It’s the best hawker food from the surrounding shoplots – better than Neighborhood Food Court (this is good coz it’s 24 hours though) and other similar coffee shops. It has the best stalls on average (except for mixed rice, the dedicated one opposite this is better).

    • Yup, you can’t beat hot nasi lemak! πŸ™‚

I’m really not a huge fan of cold nasi lemak e.g. the ones on the tops of tables in mamaks. I can handle semi-warm nasi lemak e.g. the one operating from vehicles and setting up temporary stalls by the road, but it takes good, hot nasi lemak to get me going.

The fried chicken here is amazing too! The rempah in the coating is superb!

    • I get cravings for it quite a bit too! πŸ™‚

I used to love eating CKT as a kid, but seldom eat it nowadays since I eat more rice. It’s the opposite of what I did as a kid, I ate no rice and lots of noodles. Haha.

Man, I can’t wait to go to Japan, we are planning our trip there early next year!
