5 interesting snacks I bought back from Sibu

1. Marmite Rice Cakes

Marmite Rice Cakes

Marmite is something you either love or hate. It’s a very divisive yeast extract meant to be spread on toast. I went to Christchurch, New Zealand when I was 15 for my high school and fell in love with it immediately. I’ve since tried the Australian and United Kingdom version and but I’ve never seen their rice cakes before. Naturally, a got a couple of packs to bring back to KL.

2. Cadbury Roses Strawberry Dream

Cadbury Roses Strawberry Dream

This is a limited edition flavor of Cadbury Roses. I always make it a point to go to the local import specialty shop to get some snacks before I go back. They had a huge sale this time since lots of the items are close to expiry. I decided to grab a couple of packs since I can eat a lot of chocolate in a day, so it doesn’t matter to me if the use by date is next month.

3. White Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

White Reeses PB Cups

I love Reese’s PB Cups but not everyone likes them. This is the white chocolate version. I wanted to bring some back for my better half to try since this variety isn’t very common. The stuff here is all made in the country of origin too – United States, UK, Australia etc etc. It’s a real blessing that we have such a bounty of imported chocolate and snacks in such a small town.

4. Twizzlers

Twizzlers

I love licorice and would buy a big pack of plain store-brand licorice twists when I was studying in Australia. I’m partial to the aniseed taste but I know a lot of people don’t like them. It’s another love-it-or-hate-it candy. I chose licorice as one of the flavors when we went to Ladurรฉe at Champs-ร‰lysรฉes during our trip to France. I adore it and this is spiked with Hershey’s chocolate to boot. My dear doesn’t like it *at all* but I plan to proselytize to her. smirk

5. Whoppers

Whoppers Malted Milk Balls

OMG! This is quite rare in Malaysia. You always see Maltesers (made by Mars) instead of Whoppers (Hershey’s). The latter was invented first and is more common in Commonwealth (or ex-British colonies, like our country). Whoppers are a United States product and honestly, I prefer Maltesers since I grew up with them. However, it’s harder to find Whoppers so I got a two boxes to bring back. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • It’s available around in KL too! ๐Ÿ™‚

You just have to look harder coz there are so many shops here (BIG, Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer etc) all selling different things. In Sibu, we only have this one.

    • I know BIG, Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer and Cold Storage carries them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Not all the range, I mean BIG might carry 3 things, Village Grocer 2, but only in Bangsar and so forth. It’s harder to find things here coz everything is so decentralized and spread out. In Sibu we only have ONE shop which sells imports, so it’s easier to get everything there.

  1. Is it a grocery store called Tai Thong (or something similiar…or totally dissimiliar, I don’t even know) near Wisma Sanyan? I was in Sibu recently for a wedding and my hosts took me to this shop to stock up on Sarawak black and white peppercorns, and I noticed that they have a lot of international snacks (I’m based in Sydney), so just thinking this may be the same shop…or not.

BTW, love your blog! I do believe this is my first time commenting, and I especially enjoy your food posts (home cooked and restaurants).

    • Yup, it’s called Ta Kiong! ๐Ÿ™‚

This is the one, it’s the only one which carries a significant amount of imports from all over the world. Yeah, I didn’t even know they were selling Sarawak peppercorns until a few days ago (!!!). A friend of my dad’s was bringing two of her distributors (from KL, a tyre company) and they wanted to get Sarawak whole peppercorns.

Thanks for reading! Would have been awesome to have caught you in Sibu, maybe next time. Cheers!

    • It’s all on sale coz the use-by date is close! ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s a good thing and a bad thing, the good thing is the stuff is cheap, the bad thing is almost ALL the stock was brought in at around the same time so this means MOST of the chocolates are about to expire so there’s none you can buy at full price with the expiry being two years from now.

You just have to look harder for it while for us in Sibu, we only have this one shop – Ta Kiong. Also, I heard from the proprietor that they’re actually one of the pioneers in importing some of the foodstuff, there was a market in Sibu then (due to the large number of people who have studied abroad, a lot of the Chinese in Sibu is rich, timber or other fortunes).

Also, coz Ta Kiong is independent, they have more leeway in experimentation e.g. getting a few containers of an obscure, limited edition batch of stuff from US, UK or Spain and see if it sells. BIG (Ben’s Independent Grocer) is the same, they’re independent so they can do stuff like bring in fresh black Pรฉrigord truffles and see how the market responds.

  3. Looking at all these snacks, it looks like you brought them back from overseas. Well, in a way it’s true that you get it from ‘abroad’ as there is that vast ocean separating us ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Haha! Yeah, in a sense you’re right. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ta Kiong has a lot of leeway in importing the stuff they like (or think would sell) since they’re independent. That’s why we get a wide range of rather unusual (but good) stuff.

    • I love licorice too Mun! ๐Ÿ™‚

Me neither, haven’t seen Marmite rice cakes before, but apparently there are Marmite chips (Walkers and other brand) as reported by Kristin. I don’t remember seeing them when I was in Australia but there are a lot of limited editions e.g. Harrods had a Guinness x Marmite where the Marmite is flavored with the yeast of Guinness!
