I’ve always trusted in my judgement when driving, despite my less-than-stellar history of vehicular safety. I have, in my slightly-more-than-a-decade-long driving experience, ran down a person, totally crashed my car, and have a static road sign pole run into me. Nevertheless, I’ve always believed in the rule of “If the front can pass, the side can too”.
That theory was put to the test yesterday evening as I was making my way out of my lunchbox sized assigned parking lot. I’m located next to a pillar and have had no beef with said pillar in my three months of parking here. I pulled out of the parking spot, clearing the front, just to hear the sound of concrete scraping my car. I tend to accelerate so the scraping sound continued for a rather long time before I realized it.
I got down to inspect the damage – it seems that the close encounter with the concrete pillar requires a trip to the workshop this weekend. It took a whole piece of paint off, revealing the alloy underneath. It also “repainted” the side of my car, making it a distinctive shade of yellow that doesn’t go very well with the black paintjob.
I’m still pondering about the physics behind the unfortunate event.
OoooOps… I think that day I just commented that it’s a miracle your car has no scratches. Really *touch wood* lor. :S
yo HB, is the reflection my temporarily car? u took this pic yesterday afternoon?
Ouch!
Aiks. This was at the office parking lot?
awesome mspaint graphic! LOL
The middle of the rear wheels always forms a tangent to the curve.
The body work went inside the tangent : )
“Props on the AWESOME paint skills! ”
This is what i actually wrote before i noticed your comment. so you pretty much stole it from me and I demand reparations! π
to HB: Glad you made it out of there alive XD
Is the concrete pillar ok?
LOL!
Ahahaha… the evil concrete pillar shd be as okay as ever. XD
hb i hope the concrete pillar have bought himself a 3rd party insurance…
cheers.
I used to believe in that rule too, until this happened to me. Balls to the rule, the car can travel more sideways than forwards when you turn the wheels sharply so the side can be impacted.
wah what happen to u la ?weh huai bin contact me la i know 1 good workshop with their good workmanship after that maybe we can go for a good bak kut teh
haha… good driving skills there!
now u sudah buang itu bad luck … your car should be ok after this …
I think your car has got what they call “side-view mirrors”??? Hahahahaha!!!! That YeeHou sounds like a Maths teacher! LOL!!!
Juice: It does have scratches. My ex drove it against a concrete barrier in a carpark. :S
Myhorng: You have a temporary car? Did you rent it?
Jac: Thankfully my coworker Bryan told me a cheaper alternative. Wax the car and then use this glossy spray paint on it first. If it doesn’t work, then to the workshop it goes. π
I’m not going to fork out RM 400 for a paintjob without trying this first. I’m damn broke, but then again, I’m always broke. :S
Jason: Yeah, I’m at 3A next to the pillar. I’m two cars in front and to the left of WY’s car. I’ve never had problems with clearing the concrete pillar until yesterday. Oh well.
KY: Haha! It was done in PS. I dunno how to resize MS Paint so I drew it in PS instead. π
Tan Yee Hou: Thanks bro! Very well explained indeed! I shall have to be more careful in the future. :S
Lev: Haha! It would take a lot of velocity to kill me with a concrete pillar. I was just pulling out of a car parking space. π
I haven’t achieved the killer velocity yet, but if I crash into one of them concrete crash barriers, yeah, please put my epitaph as “He loved life and lived it well”. π
Jeff: -_-”
Yes, it was perfectly fine. π
WEEN: Fucking self-accidents, I hate it. It’s not worth it to claim insurance (the hassle) and it’s also a hassle to fix it.
Juice: It’s evil right? Our carpark is like damn small like that.
mk: Haha! I have all coverage insurance. It’s a necessity due to the way I drive. π
ShaolinTiger: Yeah mate, I think that’s what happened. I turned the steering wheel too sharply instead of the slow gradient I should be doing. Oh well. You live, you learn.
Riduan: Thanks bro! How much? For this kind of damage? I’m going to try the wax + spray thing first though.
BKT on me.
eiling: There is a reason you’re not very comfortable with me driving Eiling, and this is the reason. π
headsteadi: I crashed the Vios at least 5-6 times already. The first was ON THE DAY I got the car, rear ended a Proton Saga. -_-”
My previous car had seen worse though. I ran over a person at a traffic light. I was so scared the person would die coz I ran a red light and the person rolled up my car and then down. WTF!
Luckily, the person didn’t die.
suituapui: Haha! The side view mirrors don’t really work when pulling out of this sort of car park bays. I tend to accelerate unnecessarily too, so yeah this is bound to happen. At least I haven’t had an accident in KL…yet. π
Let’s hope the glossy spray paint works then! *fingers crossed*
And remember to π
Say no to :S
HB, that bad what happend. But it a new paint job will fix it. Cars are for to take you places anyway that most important no engine problems. Not sure of last entry girlfriend to pick up after you? Sound you need a robot 24 hours instead of a girlfriend.
lol. This is one of those common minor accidents. It happens the most in multi-level carpark where after going up the ram to the next floor, there’s a sharp turn.
You were lucky that pillar wasn’t another car or someone standing there.
aikss…?? my dad’s car also got scratched yesterday… some noob cars dunno how to reverse…. the parking space was rather small… haih~~
its arounf rm350 thankz to ur blaack paint ahahaha
Jac: Haha! I love your comment. Good early morning laugh. Okay, more π and less :S. π
Vickie: Yeah, I need that automatic vacuum cleaner thing that moves about on its own for starters. Then I’ll need a washing machine that washes and dries and irons my work clothes. π
chriso: Very Zen. π
vincent: That’s what my ex did to the front of my car – she was driving up a car park ramp and scratched the side. π
There is another car beside me which is why I erred on the side of caution.
People would move, not so concerned about that. π
andrew: I’m sorry to hear that. Yeah, small car park lots and n00b drivers = Bad Things (TM).
Riduan: Ouch! I thought black paint is cheap(er) than the other exotic colors out there.
HB,some people are so rush getting out of parking lot at malls and supermarkets. They never looked carefully when backing out of space. A few times my car back got hit from another driver who couldn’t waited just a min. for me to get out.
You lucky it just paint job and car run good still. I always count my blessing when things goes wrong but not as worst as might be.
Michael (Mike): I have to admit, I am a bit rushed as well. Time spent on the road is time wasted and all that. π
I saw something about that subject on TV last night. Nice post.
