Greetings from Guilin!

hotel

I have arrived in Guilin and checked into this dodgy hotel smack dab in the middle of town. The cheapest room costs RMB 150 (about RM 75) for a night and if you add RMB 20 (RM 10) more you get a room with a computer and Internet! =D

slums

I wanted to stay at Flowers Youth Hostel (RMB 55 per night for a single room – get to save RM 150!) but they were fully booked. πŸ™ Thus, I went to this dubious Guilin Swan Hotel. I can’t say the view is excellant, but you get what you pay for and it’s a pretty decent hotel.

stuff

Anyway, the reason the words “dodgy” and “dubious” is being thrown around is not just from the vibe but the ancillaries in the room itself. You have to pay for EVERYTHING – only the soap is free (and even I’m not sure of that since there is a Chinese sign above it and I can’t read Chinese).

condom

There’s also a pack of condoms (RMB 10) right by the bed within easy reach but that’s not my primary concern…

genital wash

…it’s the toiletries for sale in the bathroom which prominently displays two sachets of Mei Fu Antibacterial Lotion. That in itself is not worrying, the description of said lotion is more disturbing – “Specially designed for the health of men’s genitals. Used for relieving the itching, killing germs and usual nursing of the private parts. Please apply to genital area gently. Rinse well with water“. There is a female version too, which makes me wonder what sort of clientΓ¨le this hotel attracts.

  1. The Great Firewall of China is awesome! No Twitter, no Facebook, no YouTube. πŸ™
I guess the video of an innocent rodent being clubbed to death will have to wait. !hi
dickysticky: I’m here for some much needed R&R bro. πŸ™‚
WEEN: Ask and ye shall receive! Consider it done buddy. πŸ™‚
chrisblitz: The black light won’t pass ANY hotel. Haha! UV lights in even the best of hotels will show you things you don’t want to see. πŸ˜‰
cl: Nope, it’s surprisingly cool even though it’s summer. A decidedly pleasant 19 degrees or so. Colder at night though. πŸ™‚

  2. I would die if I lived in China coz I can’t even get on MSN, much less the other social media networks. On the other hand, they have really fast broadband.
Oh, and I just noticed the two packets behind the condom – cream to “enhance pleasure” – both for men and women. Haha!

e: I went there yesterday while en route to eat a very rare rodent that was clubbed to death before my very own eyes. πŸ™‚
It’s pretty interesting, lots of things on offer, including this complicated looking contraption of which a brochure was shoved into my hand. I didn’t go though, not really my scene. πŸ™‚
KY: Heh! Yeah, an improvement at least. πŸ˜‰
ah nel: Yup, did that last night (legitimate one). Haha! RMB 50 for one hour, fucking cheap eh? That’s about RM 25.
shimmers999: I’ve been out, just blogged when I come back to the hotel, quick ones.
At least my blog isn’t blocked by The Great Firewall of China!
Problem is, everything in China is in Chinese (stating the obvious) so it’s really hard for me to find stuff – had to ask instead, and some people find it difficult to understand my Chinese while I find it almost impossible to understand Mainland Chinese. Is “yau” 0 or 1? πŸ™‚

I had to repeat several times, gesture and sometimes point to things to make myself understood. Their accent is quite difficult to understand too. πŸ™‚
eiling: Haha! There are so many Engrish signs in Guilin – my SIFAT BE CAREFUL with a person slipping and falling on his ass. HAHAHAAHA!
They mean “Slippery be careful”. πŸ™‚
kenwooi: Indeed, indeed, especially in China. I lost RMB 400 (RM 200) for no reason at all. I didn’t spend it, it just went missing. Suspect a cigarette vendor shortchanged me. πŸ™

  8. dude, long time no see. and you were in China? Guilin kinda sucks but Yangshou is really close and a lot more fun. You run into some burned out westerners enjoying their final days tokin on opium and chasing young chinese girls.
next time you are in the area hit me up.

    clean: Will do! πŸ™‚
Avi: Hey bro it’s been a while. I went to Yangshou too! I much prefer it to Guilin. A lot of happy domestic tourists and couples on bicycles holding hands. Sweet. I felt happy looking at them.
    Good beer fish too! πŸ™‚
