Okay, the first thing on the agenda when I arrived in Guilin is to eat the famous Gui Lin Mee Fen (rice vermicelli) with horse meat. However, that proved harder to find that I initially thought. Rats too for that matter, but that’s another post.

Anyway, after walking 1,000 miles and nearly getting run down by several cars and buses (it’s left hand drive here in China) I decided to consult a person from the industry that knows everything about anything obscure or illegal – hard to find cuisine, the oldest profession in the world, substances, basically The Travelers Guide to a New City (TM). Your friendly neighborhood taxi driver.

Within minutes (and a RMB 10 fare, which is RM 5, pretty damn cheap cabs over here) I was on my way to the oldest Guilin Mi Fen with Horse Meat establishment in town. It has reputedly been around for about 40 years (as told by two different sources) and caters to the locals instead of tourists (just the way I like it).

Alas! How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! In the past, horses were used for transport, war machines by knights, riot control by mounted police, and prized stallions on the racetrack. It has now been relegated (at least in China) to food. Heh!

The Gui Lin Mi Fen is not rice vermicelli as we know it, it looks more like rice noodles to me. You are free to add as many condiments, pickles and spices as you want. I highly recommend their chilli flakes – Guilin is known for its spicy food so go wild with this one.

Gui Lin Mi Fen with Horse Meat is a soup dish, which is not what I usually eat, but since it’s the local specialty, I tasted it and pronounce it GOOD. The spring onions adds a lot to the taste of the soup while the peanuts contribute that additional texture to this dish. Best of all, it only costs RMB 6 (RM 3) for a large bowl.

I love it, mostly coz of the horse meat. Horse meat can best be described as something of a cross between beef and lamb. It’s sweet and has a nice gamey aftertaste and it’s surprisingly lean.

  2. I heard somewhere in Bangi (or thereabouts) can get briyani kuda, but the people I’ve heard about it from didn’t speak highly of the quality. Probably not done right.
    So nice to have food adventures overseas. /jealous

  3. Dont go try any horse meat in malaysia. They are all derived from those euthanized race horses from sg besi race course. Those race horses are daily trained to run in races & full of tough muscles, definitely no tenderloin. More over, these horses are long term users of anabolic steroid & many performance enhanced drugs

  7. my recollection of Guilin involves a place which is surrounded by endless of mountains and spectacular scenery . Sadly i didn’t get to try any horse meat.

  8. HB, that so inteeresting a restaurant that serve horse meat. In states it use for pets food but some part of Japan I readed people do buy it also. My cousins in Hawaii said there a lot of wild horese and pigs goats, chickens, deers. So any one with permit could go hunting.
    Wondering do you ever went to any Indian Restaurants to dine? I always head to Indian Restaurant that have buffet price reasonable.

    Michelle Chin: Nope it tastes like something between beef and lamb. Very lean meat. Yeah, horses are hard to find in some places, but usually culturally acceptable. It’s not even haram, but that other word which is not halal as well that means “discouraged”. 🙂
    Marcky: Interesting! I would love to try that one. Camel meat briyani is available in Kuching, never had the horse version though.
    Yeah, will be posting about my rat/guinea pig experience and snake blood straight from the snake with snake skin and snake meat and gall soon! I suspect the first video would cause some outrage. 😉

    chrisblitz: Everything is cheap in Guilin except for exotic meat. Most are endangered and requires a permit to operate and have a quota. That’s where most of my money went. T_T

    foodcrazee: It’s a smoking room. The sign just means “don’t smoke on the bed lest you fall asleep and cause a fire or don’t leave burn marks on the mattress”.
    You can smoke EVERYWHERE in China (with certain very limited exceptions). Inside shops? No problem…everyone lights up. 🙂
