Banh cuon in Hanoi

goi choon start

Banh cuon is a term used to describe rice flour rolls in Vietnam. I was wondering along the streets of Hanoi when I decided to pop into a street stall to try one of their offering. I don’t quite remember where this was as I was just walking along and taking in the culture but it was really good.

Goi Cuon stall

The Northern part of Vietnam (including Hanoi) has a slightly different varient of Banh cuon. It’s a “rolled cake” which contains pork, shrimp herbs and rice vermicelli wrapped in rice paper.

You can see them prepare it fresh right in front of you!

Goi Cuon plate

This version also has a healthy sprinkling of pork floss on top and it’s served with a dipping sauce which has lime, sugar and fish sauce called Nuoc cham.

Goi Cuon preparation

It costs VND 15,000 for a plate (about RM 2.40) for a plate of four rolls and unsweetened iced tea is on the house.

Goi Cuon dip

I love the yin and yang concept of Vietnamese cuisine – they always have raw vegetables and herbs to complement the dish.

The dipping sauce is something awesome too. I ate it without the dipping sauce first but with the nuoc cham it makes it all the more better. Street food FTW in Vietnam!

  1. Sorry to be a bit pedantic here, but banh cuon and goi cuon are quite different. Banh cuon is like chee cheong fun with the southern equivalent of banh uot. The northern variety tastes slightly sourish (don’t know why) goi cuon is like popia with a hard popia skin. More confusingly there is also bobia which appears to have a softer filling.

  2. Third pic – What are those brown stuffs stacking next to the eggs? Looks more like roasted pork skins, but they also look like hand towels on the fifth pic. πŸ™‚

  3. HB, this something so different I never saw before. It seem simple enough to make I guess. I could get the ingredient at any Asian markets in San Francisco.
What I like about it is not deep fried or oily. More healthy dish. I do like ice tea black tea with no sugar or lemom also.

  14. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
