My iPad 2 has a cracked screen

ipad 2 cracked screen

I put my iPad 2 in this small The North Face sling bag during the time I spent in Australia. It fits the iPad 2 snugly in the back compartment where you zip it.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t offer any protection at all. I dropped the bag numerous times and must have hit the side of the iPad 2 once coz that side shattered and spread into two long cracks down the entire screen. Crap. It still works though…but there’s bits of glass that comes off every time you accidentally touch the side where it shattered. πŸ™

That’s why I can never have anything nice. 😑

    • Haha! Neither do I bro. πŸ˜‰

It still works although some games (Infinity Blade, which requires a lot of swiping) isn’t as responsive. 😑

    • Haha! Yeah bro, it’s a reference to MythBusters. I didn’t think anyone would get it. πŸ™‚

It’s what Grant always says, love the show. πŸ˜€

    • Heh! I’m not a big fan of protective covers. I never use it even for my (stolen) iPhone 4.

I reckon the bulk and weight it adds on is way too much of a tradeoff.

A friend of mine also has an iPad 2 and she has the foldable cover and a protective casing and it feels heavy so I don’t think it’ll be comfortable to use for long (4 hours or so) periods of reading, which is what I mainly do on it. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, the Apple products I’ve had (iPhone 4, iPad 2) are all rather fragile things. The entire front screen is made of glass, instead of a polymer, can’t be more fragile than that.

It won’t survive even a 1 foot drop inside a bag without cracking the screen. πŸ™

I’m not keen on protective covers though coz it adds bulk and weight, and I prefer it to be lighter to so I can use it for prolonged periods of time.

I guess you just need to be REALLY CAREFUL with it.

        • Haha! I don’t use protective details, even back in the good ol days when I bought my first Palm for a price that would shock new gadget owners today. The only three accessories I got was a screen protector (the film sort that you stick over the front to protect against stratches), a leather case, and a really cool aftermarket stylus by Targus that cost AUD 120.

The stylus was very nifty, it has a pen inside too, so I could write as well as use it as a stylus.

However, it didn’t lock in very well so I lost it somewhere and I stuck to the 3-packs of original Palm styluses (stylii?) after that. Cheaper.

Anyway, after my first PDA, I realized that I didn’t like the way the screen looked with a screen protector. The colors are less vivid etc, so I never used protection after that. πŸ™‚

    • I know Fresh! T_T

It’s hard to play some games now but overall it still works.

I use it mainly for reading ebooks anyway and it’s not that bad when you invert the color (black background with white text) which is the setting I use to read anyway – less strain on the eyes. πŸ™‚

…but yeah, sucks that one edge is shattered and I have to be really careful with it coz pieces of glass come off when I brush against it. 😑

    • Haha! Yeah, and a cat will always land feet first, so there’s no risk of breaking anything.

Man, I wish I had a cat again. I would love one.

Hmm…I might just get another one. πŸ™‚

  1. Too bad it’s not made of gorilla glass instead. It would probably give it some extra durability. Why don’t you sellotape the broken edge?

    • Hmm…I could but I’m worried it’s going to ruin the sensitivity of the screen. 😑

Thanks for the tip though. πŸ™‚

  2. It is gorilla glass, same like iPhone 4.

That makes it very hard and scratch proof, it does not stop it from shattering..

Especially when the glass is edge to edge without a bevel.

    Better be more careful bro!

    • Yeah bro, that’s the problem I noticed most people with the iPhone had – shattering when it drops. No bevelled edges eh?

Thanks bro, will be more careful with the iPad. Guess it’s a blessing it still works. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Jess!

Yeah, the glass isn’t very sharp so there’s no concern about cutting my hands on it.

Replacing the glass won’t be cheap and since it still works, I’m just going to keep it like that. πŸ™‚

    • Hello Brian!

Nope, if you drop the iPad or iPhone, you’re pretty much on your own. πŸ™‚

The warrenty doesn’t cover these kinda things. User related. 😑

Hey, you are from Sarawak, do you know Kachama Chicken???? I am trying to find out the scientific name for this herb.

    • Yeah, kacang ma is a staple of Foochow cuisine.

I don’t know the scientific name of the herb, I’ll go look it up too.

It’s a bit of an aquired taste though, I never liked it until a couple of years ago. πŸ™‚

    • Haha! I know. 😑

…unfortunately protective cases all makes the gadgets too bulky and heavy so I just use it and take the damage as wear and tear. πŸ™
