AirAsia Airline Food Review

air asia food

I took the 9:15 am flight out of Sibu to head over to KL for the weekend. My sister is getting married later tonight in PJ so that’s why I took three (3) days unpaid leave to extend my support over here. Anyway, I bumped into a friend on the flight (actually bumped into quite a few people) and sat beside her and decided to sample the new AirAsia menu.

AirAsia has come up with some nifty marketing that ties in their menu with brands like 1901 hotdogs and other franchises. The Snack Attack hot meals packs have also been given a facelift, with standardized features. The hot meal packs now come with full color transparent heat seals with photos and the name of the dish.

fried rice

This is 1902 Gourmet Food Asian Fried Rice with Chicken Satay (RM 9). AirAsia has a history of partnering up with established catering establishments for their meals – Sri Melur Jaya is a renowned restaurant in Selangor that provides a large portion of their hot on-board meals.

I had the 1902 Gourmet Food Asian Fried Rice with Chicken Satay (it’s actually mini satay sticks) while my musically inclined friend opted for the Sri Melur Jaya Nasi Briyani with Curry Chicken (RM 8). We both shared the Sri Melur Jaya Roti Jala (RM 6).

aa roti jala

The Sri Melur Jaya Roti Jala turned out to be the best dish of all – taste and presentation wise. It’s quite spicy, which is always a plus point for me.

The total came up to RM 27 with a bottle of mineral water. I could have eaten better for less, but eh, it was fun to binge on food on an airplane and I’ve wanted to check out the new menu for quite a while.

P/S –
sixthseal.com is still a bit messed up from the backups. Some images are missing but I promise I’ll get that fixed once I go back to Sibu. I’m currently in KL. Cheers!

  1. I tried the roti jala and its quite good. Wilson on the other hand prefer nasi lemak Pak Nasier. I notice your friend is a girl, mind sharing ;p

  2. This is titled as a “review”.. but no mention at all if the other two foods were any good..? If roti jala is the best (roti jala being tasteless, and only the curry has spicy taste), that means the nasi and the other one sucks balls?

  3. it’s abit funny that the maggi mees are selling at rm5 each but heavier meals like this only at rm6-9. wanted to give it a try but it’s not claimable from the company… hahaha!

  4. Hey mate,
Your food review is getting a little boring! Air Asia food reviews have been blogged about so many times by bloggers such as Kenny Sia and some other guy flying frequently to Langkawi. Anyways, what has happened to Autumn??? Enjoy KL. Cheers.

  5. HB, Those food are interesting to me. So it extra for meals I gather. Look good for in states it western foods on planes. The coach now charge extra for foods and drinks not sure for headsets too.
Now many top restaurants still trying to get contact with airlines still with better menus and prices. If they prices and foods is better of course.

  6. Hey Dude, Glad you’re back again. Does that airline charge you for the foods or with the ticket fare? So many airlines have no frills now. I travel business class and it have change a lot. Never had southeast Asian foods on plane before and thank for sharing it with bloggers.

  7. I like seeing what it like on Asian airlines. Never took a trip yet but will soon. I find it so interesting. Do you still get film to watch? What that ticket include on the plane?

  8. Yo Dude Man, Food look good but like to know it with fare of trip? All the airlines cutting down on things. What your ticket included? Your blog rock. Learn and see a lot of things from it.

  9. HB Dude, You must took coach but food look very delis. Was it extras or part of ticket fare? Last time I took trip to Asia the air hostess was very rude. She bags of peanuts (which no more) to passengers like we were monkeys in zoo. I scold her for it and she back off afterward. I will bring a good dvd movie to watch on laptop for movie on plane boring at time.

  11. Roland: Yeah, the roti jala is surprisingly good eh? I also ate the chicken rice on the trip back, also surprisingly good.
My friend is the same musically inclined friend.
j: My apologies. It was my vacation so I didn’t have time to update my blog as detailed as I want to. It would be a waste to stay in the hotel and spend 2 hours writing when I can be going out. Anyway, the nasi briyani was alright, but too little meat. The fried rice was horrible, quite tasteless. The roti jala was the only thing that was good. πŸ™‚
anon: It’ll be back to normal tomorrow. Don’t worry, my friend. All is well at sixthseal.com πŸ™‚
Yiling: Yeah, that’s why it’s more cost-effective to go for the hot meal packs. πŸ™‚
Hey, it probably IS claimable if your company pays for your air ticket. Just pre-book the meals online. You can do that now at the AirAsia site. Eat for free (or on your company’s expense account). πŸ˜‰
The Bull: Yeah, I know, it was my vacation, cut me a little slack. πŸ˜‰
I am proud to be the first AirAsia Snack Attack menu reviewer way back in 2004 when I ate through the entire menu…in a single flight. Heh!
KL is good as always. Cheers, mate!
Amy: Yeah, you have to pay for meals on-board over here. Headsets, I think they charge for long distance international flights.
I’ve heard of premium restaurants partnering with airlines in the states for better on board food. Interesting trend.
Edward: Nope, the food is seperately charged. It’s a no frills airline, so you only get the air ticket.
You even have to pay for checked in baggage. πŸ™‚
Michale: Not on domestic flights, but international flights have a personal TV set at the seat in front. The ticket is only for the flight, everything else is charged – RM 5 for each checked in baggage or RM 10 if you only do it at the counter.
Jordan: Nope, the fare is for the flight only. Even checked in baggage is charged at five dollars each.
    Thanks for reading! πŸ™‚
KY: OMG! You sure have an eye for detail. Typo, was in a hurry when I wrote the post since I didn’t want to spend too much time on it on a vacation. πŸ™‚
Jason: AirAsia only has coach. There is no business or first class, it’s a no frills airline. Food is extra, it’s paid on board (or you can pre-order if you want to, for a cheaper price).
cbenc12: The new menu is quite good. The previous Snack Attack menu was quite horrible. πŸ™‚
foongpc: Oh well, I guess you can eat better at regular places for the same price, but we were rushing to the airport both times. πŸ™‚
