My dSLR is ruined!!!

dslr lcd ruined

I have been shooting blind for the past few days since the LCD on my dSLR is totally FUBAR. I’m not sure what happened to it actually but I think from the damage pattern it seems to be…water.

I have no idea how water came into contact with the dSLR. It’s like one of those mysteries that you just don’t think about lest you hurt your brain.

H20…sigh, with one hand you giveth life and with the other taketh away.

  1. cumidanciki: Yeah, this is why I’m shooting blind last night but surprisingly, most, if not all of the shots came out okay. πŸ™‚
Dylan: Hmm…there is no damage to the screen, so I’m inclined to believe water. However, it’s an LCD, it could happen. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now.
Thanks for the support! See ya there! πŸ™‚

  2. eiling: Yeah it just happened a couple of days ago. I didn’t realized until I switched it on either. It’s alright though, seems that I can shoot okay without preview. Haha. πŸ™‚

  3. Dude, similar damage happened to the LCD of my Minolta DiMage years ago. It was a factory defect, Minolta offered to take the camera back with a refund after I used the camera for more than 1 year.
You might wanna check whether this is the same LCD factory damage, …because Sony took over Minolta’s “pro-sumer camera” division ( my refund check was from Sony). who may used the same F-up LCD OEM in China.

  4. KY: Haha! Yeah, it’s exactly like shooting with film. Photos turned out surprisingly good though! πŸ™‚
Choonie: Hmm…it might be but I need it on Friday and Saturday for the blogathon thing I’m doing so I can’t send it right now. I’m so busy these few days too! T_T
    e: Hey, interesting tidbit! πŸ™‚
Perhaps that may have been what happened, I’ll go and ask the shop! πŸ™‚
I think it’s still under warrenty, it hasn’t been one year. I just can’t take it in right now coz I need it. Cheers!
fish fish: It’s a good thing I also have a compact waterproof digicam now that I bought for Korea. However, I still prefer to use the dSLR. πŸ™‚
gypsy-on-the-move: Yeah, will have to change the LCD. I hope that’s all that’s damaged. πŸ™‚
hitomi: I’m not very sure what happened here. I think water is the most probably cause. I just turned it on a couple of days ago (haven’t done so in a few days) and the LCD was messed up. Oh well. T_T

  5. Rei: Thanks! πŸ™‚
It’s okay, I’ll just send it back to the shop for repairs when I’m done with the blogathon this weekend. πŸ™‚
Tony Wan: Haha! I don’t disagree, I wish I had gotten another dSLR but only coz of focusing problems and the expensive add-ons for Sony. πŸ™

  6. I guess that must feel horrid after a 11000 ringgit car crash!
But no matter what that’s still better than a day in rehab right? XP
Condolences on your FUBAR DSLR screen. Well if it stays FUBAR maybe it’s time to get a SLR with a suffix of D (Nikon, that is) =D

  7. Tony Wan: Haha! Well, sometimes I do wish I had gotten another brand. The peripherals are too expensive. T_T
Kun: The optical viewfinder is still alright. =D
That’s the one I use anyway, so I can still take photos. πŸ™‚
    mk: True that. πŸ™‚
Sony has made a lot of inroads into the dSLR game though. However, proprietery stuff is too expensive. :S
Chingy: Yup! I think it still is. =D
    …: Haha! Cheers! πŸ™‚
Something better has already come out.
First good thing today was finding a GREAT condo just after 30 minutes of searching.
Second good thing…erm, well let’s just say that it’s a dream come true.

aud: Haha! Yeah it’s a military term – Fucked Up Beyond All Repair. πŸ™‚
I’ll need to replace that LCD. T_T
Ryan: Actually today was a pretty good day for me! It’s past 3 am now but I’m still riding a wave of (natural) endorphines. Happy! =D
Cheers: Heh! I don’t have that kind of money. Especially after I invested RM 1,499 into an external flash for this dSLR. πŸ™‚

  8. Personally speaking though, you probably shouldn’t have paid that much for Sony’s external flash. Canon’s top of the line flash costs RM1,500 and for RM900 you can get 430EX which is another decent flash just a notch under 530EX. Me being a cheapskate, I bought a 3rd party flash and used the money I saved for a tele lens. πŸ™‚ Maybe next time you’ll want to consider 3rd party add-ons.
PS. Next time get a weather sealed Canon EOS 5DMK11. Just don’t go dropping it in the river/pool. :O

  9. Cheers: Yeah, but the 3rd party flash for Sony looks mighty flimsy and I didn’t feel that it could handle the abuse I’ll dish out to it. πŸ™‚
Heh! That sounds good, but expensive. :S

  10. Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the abuse you put your stuffs thru. X_X The 5D kit + lens can be had for RM11k. The same it cost to repair you car.

  11. The A350 screen, being a tilting design, is more prone to impact. I would suggest sending it in and after, getting the polycarbonate screen protector to protect it.
Also, don’t pay retail price – Sg. Wang sells the HVL-F58AM with Malaysian warranty for RM1100 (which no Canon or Nikon user remembers to calculate – street versus street, retail versus retail…) I find it ironic as the Sony flashes are a whole load cheaper.

  12. Donny T: Heh! I can’t afford a new one. πŸ™‚
Albert Ng: Okay, thanks for the advice! I’ll check if the warrenty is still okay. πŸ™‚
Okay, I’ll go to Sg Wang if it’s not covered by the warrenty. πŸ™‚
