Hennessy lor mee ayer panas

Becky told us about this cognac infused lor mee at Ayer Panas Hawker Center in Setapak and being a huge fan of Hennessy VSOP it was decided that we’ll pay this stall a visit after the Zorbing session.

Hennessy lor mee

The premises of the acclaimed Hennessy lor mee is very unassuming. Their kitchen is quite basic, with their claim to fame sealed by the various empty boxes of Hennessy Very Special Old Pale hanging around the place. You can’t miss it.

Hennessy lor mee jerine

I would be hard pressed to find this place if not for the GPS (remember to type Ayer Panas instead of Air Panas) but the trip was well worth it. We were famished and ordered their flagship dish but before that let me introduce you to the other dishes we had:

Hennessy lor mee hokkien mee

Hokkien Mee. It was good, not very oily, but lacks the deep fried lard that makes or breaks the dish.

Hennessy lor mee pork

I liked the kung pow pork too.

rice vermicelli in wine soup

We also ordered the rice vermicelli in wine soup with lala (RM 11). It’s another one of the famous dishes here, with slices of fresh fish providing an aquatic twist to this already twisted alcohol spiked noodles.

Hennessy lor mee mixed

Back to the Hennessy lor mee (which I remind you is their signature dish, bar none) – it was every bit as tasty as I imagined and more. The cook put a rather generous amount of Hennessy VSOP shots into the dish and the almost philanthropic portions of prawns and pork provides the protein to counter the carbohydrates.

Hennessy lor mee setapak

The Hennessy really added a lot to the taste of the lor mee – mixed into the dish, it became more than the sum of its parts – hearty, rich and sweet. It’s well worth the drive down and at RM 11, it’s practically a steal!

Thanks for lunch Becky! She knows the proprietor so we got cutting queue privileges. ;)

The embarrassing thing for me is this – Until recently, my grandmother lives in Ayer Panas. I have been going there all my life. I feel so ashamed that I am not aware of this place.
I have a question though : Does this place only do lunch or are they open for dinner as well. What are their business hours? Coz’ you never know when you might suddenly crave more alcoholic food at weird hours, right?

  7. My gawd…. droooooool~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  9. I suddenly thought of the girl with mushroom head and started laughing to myself again.

  10. WEEN: Yeah, tell me about it mate, I haven’t worn those threads in God knows how long – we were all drenched and I just grabbed some clothes that happened to be in the boot of my car :)
    Eriku: Haha! Good one. :)
Michelle Chin: Yup! Especially for a strong tasting full flavored liquor like cognac – it adds a lot to the lor mee! :)
ah nel: I can drink Guinness anytime. This hawker center doesn’t sell alcohol, I had to run to the restaurant across the road to get a bottle of stout. Becky doesn’t drink so it was just me and Jerine, though I must admit I drank the bulk of it. :)
diz: I was hungry when I wrote it last night too. It’s very good stuff, this Hennessy lor mee. I’m loving it! :)
WinnieKepala: Hmm…I’m not too sure about their opening hours, lemme ask and get back to you. It opens in the morning though, we went there for lunch and the place was PACKED. :)
Yeah, it tastes awesome with the Hennessy mixed into the starchy egg gravy. Since you’re from Ayer Hitam, you should go check it out! :)
Social Stranger: Haha! Yeah, come back and eat some good ol hawker food, Malaysian style! :)
mickey: Heh! Yeah, we did! We shared the ABC though, very good stuff, different without santan and with lots of gula melaka. :)
    No beef behind noodles. ;)
Jerine: Haha! I still remember her staring at you. Funny. :)

  11. the noodle looks phat!

  12. This reminds me of how much I liked lor mee. I was visiting Setapak twice a month for two years, and how could I miss this one! HB, remember the location (I doubt LOL), so that you know how to go next time if I am in K.L.

  13. i’ll let it slide this time. btw the food looks great as always.

  14. wah so lucky! always got girls feeding you… anyways, you didn’t ask for “tambah hennessy?”

  15. KY: Yup, good stuff, you can actually taste the Hennessy! :)
fish fish: This stall is quite famous, think it might be the ONLY Hennessy lor mee in town. It is certainly the first and the best. :)
I know how to go coz I have…
    *drumroll*
    GPS! =D
WEEN: Yeah, some of the best food are found in the strangest, most run down places! :)
eiling: Yup, we did! Becky asked for tambah Hennessy already, we got quite a lot – the amber fluid in the cognac! :)

  16. It ain’t worth the drive down unless it’s infused with something even more stimulating. Might as well be worth the gas I paid for the trip, eh? ;)
Um, HB, you always seem to be outnumbered by members of the opposite sex in the pictures on your webiste. Lucky bugger.

  17. Map please!!

  18. Cheers: Heh! Then you’ll have to wait for MY cooking. ;)
I’ll add in Something Special (TM).
Eh no la, just happened to be in that configuration that day. :)
xes: I’ll do better – GPS coordinates! Lemme just get it from my Garmin when I get off work. :)

  19. If the food tasted good when it’s cold, you know it’s gotta taste even better fresh from the wok.

( dammit…. hardheaded and inflexible ( except me of course) still looks pretty good. the food, not you… glad you are still here to give me advice. see, i was supposed to be dead several years ago. well alot. 29. thenomadGourmand: Nice! Sounds like a plan Becky! :)

  30. how can i help myself with lor mee in New zealand ehhhh ????

  31. Charles: I think your best bet is to head to an Asian restaurant. :)
That’ll probably be the way to go about it unless you want to cook yourself.

  32. Could you please provide the GPS co-ordinates or the full address for this place…THKS in advance

  33. Nick: You have a GPS?
Just key in “Ayer Panas” and one of the results will be “Ayer Panas Hawker Centre”.
That’s where this place is. :)
