3 delicious and dirt cheap meals with bread

I never eat white bread. It’s nutritionally inferior and I prefer the taste of brown bread nowadays anyway. I go for wholemeal/wholegrain (including the fad ones that has “enrichments” like Canadian Purple Wheat). It’s more expensive at RM 2.80 – RM 4.50 but definitely worth it for the additional vitamins for a balanced (hmm..) diet.

1. Sandwiches with surimi, sausages and boiled eggs

bread sausages surimi

This is considered a treat in survival mode. Heh. The surimi is store brand and family pack sized for extra savings, the sausages are the ultimate manifestation of mystery meat (plus it’s on sale at under RM 2) and eggs are eggs – you need them.

Coincidentally, these are the same items I use to cook ramen. smirk

2. Bread with milk

Ah! The staple since time immemorial. I’ll suggest fresh milk – it’s well worth the price premium for the fortified essentials – fat, for one. 😉

Just plain bread goes a long way with flavorful fresh milk. Don’t skimp and go the reconstituted crap or low fat variants – if you’re in survival mode, you’ll need those extra calories.

3. Bread dipped in raw egg

This is a surprisingly delicious combo that I discovered. You can do it with balsamic vinegar and olive oil…so why not raw egg?

bread raw egg

Just crack one (chilled – leave it in the fridge for at least 24 hours) egg into a saucer and it can last for 4-5 slices of bread.

You can eat it by it’s own too, there’s taste and texture in some of the nut enriched ones and that’s what I do most of the time. These are just 3 examples are just to break the tedium of eating bread alone.

You know how it goes, man shall not live on bread alone. 😉

    • Heh! I’ve been eating raw eggs for a while now, haven’t had any food poisoning to boot.

You do get the weirdest cravings with this kind of ramen-bread diet though – salads start to look mighty good, as do fruits and other vegetables.

      Cheers bro! 🙂

  1. I eat any bread…as long as there is egg or sardine/tuna…or ham/bacon/luncheon meat/SPAM/ sausages etc…to go with it. Not on its own, not with butter and jam…though I may consider peanut butter or kaya sometimes. Ya…it IS said in the holy book that man does not live on bread alone – there you are! Muahahahaha!!!!!!

    • I found out that once you go wholemeal/wholegrain it’s really hard to go back.

…just like that saying, once you go black you never go back. 😉

      Haha!

Seriously though, I prefer the taste and texture of those compared to white bread.

Oh ya, SPAM would make a good addition to this, or luncheon meat for a cheaper version.

      Cheers buddy! 😀

    • Yeah, it is eh?

I remember eating that when I was a kid. Heh.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of stuff to wash up after that so I just stick to boiled eggs. No mess.

I do crave for half boiled egg with lots of pepper and soy sauce dipped in bread though!

      Cheers Charmaine! 😀

    • Nice! 🙂

Yeah, that blue plate came with the condo. It’s certainly not one of my plates, I just found it useful. I wonder where it came from?

Good to hear that! I have male pattern baldness too – also in the center of my head.

      It’s getting really bad, actually.

Huh…so raw eggs won’t hurt and it’s delicious to boot.

      Cheers bro! 🙂

  2. A big applause for your healthy diet eating.. U have the exactly same thought with me. I dont mind paying extra for that canadian purple wheat . I hardly touch white bread…;D and , same thoughts again. Milk and eggs can be simple, but it’s indeed essential in our ”PANTRY”.. XD

    • Haha! Thanks Eunice! 🙂

I don’t think it’s healthy though – especially with the highly processed food in the first one.

However, yeah, brown bread (multigrain/wholemeal) is superior nutritionally to white bread. 🙂

      It tastes much better too.

Yeah, that Canadian Purple Wheat, seems like the latest fad food, but it’s actually delicious coz of the multigrain embedded into the bread – you can actually see the grains in there.

      Very nice texture.

      Cheers Eunice! 😀

    • Nice! Yeah I’ve forgotten about that. 🙂

Actually, I drink a lot of tea nowadays to wash down everything (it’s easy to wash the cups too, if you don’t add sugar and milk).

However, I do have Milo at home as well as that Chlorella stuff (the green mix) – good supplements as well.

      Cheers bro! 😀

  3. The humble bread to me when down on luck. Not really just some time not hungry and just bread and water seem pretty good . Loss weight on it for I gain weight when eating rice with meal but not with bread.

    • Heh! Yeah, it’s good for that too.

Interesting! They’re both carbs I guess it’s about portion or some other aspect of dietary science I don’t know.

      Cheers Vickie! 🙂

    • Heh! I find it very nice, the smell and the taste! 🙂

…especially when you come to the egg yolk.

      Delicious!

Yeah, I would love that too – raw semi-boiled eggs with lots of soy sauce and pepper.

      Cheers Constance! 🙂

  5. And calcium, too… (in the milk)

It’s a head-on collision when it comes to me. I’m a big bread lover and it doesn’t matter if it’s white or brown, it’ll be eaten up in a matter of seconds. Most of the time, I have my bread with pan-fried egg or with the homemade jam. Or plain, just like that. Have been too lazy to buy bacon nowadays.

I do drink tea with milk, but it’s quite easy for me when it comes to washing the cups. Are you using milk powder or liquid milk?

    Reply
    • Yeah, I forgot about that! 🙂

      The all important calcium indeed.

I always use liquid milk (and fresh milk – don’t like the reconstituted or skim stuff) – don’t think I’ve used milk powder since I was a kid.

Ah yes, that’s a nostalgic memory from my youth too – pan fried egg with chilli sauce in a sandwich. I used to pester my dad to cook that for my primary school breakfast. Heh.

      Thanks Ciana! 🙂

    • Nice too bro! 🙂

I just hate washing up after. Haha!

Raw egg is easy to wash up, so is tea (without milk), others need a bit of elbow grease going.

      Cheers mate!

    • Hello Merryn! 🙂

Haha! I guess it’s coz I’m used to it. I eat a lot of eggs and a substantial portion of that is raw.

It’s best if you buy just when the eggs come into the hypermarket (or closer to the source if you can be bothered).

They should be sterilized anyway, so there’s no problems there – not sure about pasteurization though, not all eggs have that.

Nevertheless, it should be okay for an adult to eat raw eggs in moderation – yeah, there can be cases of salmonella and stuff like that but I think most people can ward it off, might need to be careful with children who’s immune system hasn’t been exposed though.

      Cheers! 🙂

    • Haha! Well, there’s a lot of fusion Japanese cuisine that cracks a raw egg on top of pasta, especially the chains.

Not too bad, although onsen egg would taste better, kinda like a poached egg.

I love raw salmon too, and all other sashimi! 🙂

      Cheers!

    • Yeah, true that, but it would be a lot messier to clean up too. 😉

There’s the oily pan to take care off, as well as plates etc.

I just stick to raw egg, no nutrients lost to heat too. 😉

      Cheers!

  6. If you have eggs and oil, you should make Mayo (Beat one egg with 1/2 cup oil, salt / pepper / vinegar to taste). Then you can shred the surimi in mayo and put that on the bread.

*almost* as good as Delifrance’s crabmeat mayo 😀

    • Nice! That’s a great recipe! 🙂

I’ll love to do that when I have time to wash up all the plates and all though.

That sounds like a great project to do during weekends – do up a large batch and eat it throughout the week.

      Thanks for sharing mela! 🙂

  7. i love a good tempeh sandwich. tasty, nutritious, quick to prepare. just marinate tempeh for 20 minutes, fry it a little, and then serve between two slices of bread. quite fool-proof.

    • Hey, that sounds pretty good Irene! 🙂

Tempeh sandwich indeed! Now, that’s new to me.

I gotta get that in action and compile a list of easy to do (not necessary easy to wash, but easy to do) sandwiches.

I’ll add this to the list.

      Cheers! 🙂

    • HAHAHAHAHAH

My man! Gotta love you bro, you know what I’m doing.

Yup, all the stuff involved here is cooked using the “ghetto microwave” since my actual microwave broke down, vastly decreasing the types of meals that I can easily cook.

Cheers buddy, you made me laugh out loud. 🙂

    • Heh! Yeah, that’s an option I’ll always go for – raw egg on top of rice.

      I like eggs in general.

      Very good stuff mate.

      Cheers! 🙂

  8. mine would probably be:

    – bread with tuna
    – bread with cheese slices
    – bread with margarine / peanut butter / any other spread of any kind that you can buy in a tub or jar form

in fact, that’s all the stuff i lived on when i was in flight attendant training overseas. LMFAO! everybody worried so much for me, i pretty much had free dinner every day.
