Mantis prawn

mantis prawn

I’ve never had such a succulent piece of crustacean in my life! The odd looking mantis shrimp (also called mantis prawn) tastes more like lobster than prawns.

mantis prawn size

I had this at Tambun, Penang last night. Mantis prawns are huge creatures that can grow much longer than a chopstick (shown here next to my hand for perspective). I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve ever had mantis prawn…its awesome stuff!

mantis prawn flesh

The carapace peels back to reveal a bed of soft, tender flesh that almost melts in your mouth. The sweetness of the mantis prawn flesh is unbelievable!

It’s so good that I just had to write this hyperbole laden post.

  2. the mantis prawns are usually trim by the restaurant before serving . . . kinda hard to peel if not and the trick is peeling from the bottom end towards the head . . .delish

  3. HB, how many did you ate? I would have eaten about 6 of those in no time. Last I saw those giant prawns was in Taipei wedding party. Salt and Pepper style.

  4. fufu: Nice! How big were the mantis prawns? πŸ™‚
cynthia: Yeah, and Tambun is helluva cheap too! Dinner cost RM 250 or so for six of us and we ordered a whole bunch of stuff! πŸ™‚
J2Kfm: I totally agree! I’m a new convert now, but I think mantis prawns will be expensive here. I’ll make it a point to eat these whenever I’m in Penang. πŸ™‚
Marlboro Guy: I know! It’s damn sad…I’ve been missing out on these lovely creatures all my life! I like it better than lobster too, the flesh is so tender and sweet and it peels off nicely! πŸ™‚
hitomi: I peeled it myself, which makes it all the more awesome considering this is my first time eating it. It’s a testament to mantis prawns. It really is that easy to peel as Marlboro Guy mentioned…the shell goes right off easily, one pull does the trick so you can eat the prawn WHOLE! =D
jg: Yeah, I didn’t know about it until now too. It tastes awesome! πŸ™‚
KY: It’s Tambun so it’s helluva cheap which made us wonder if there has been a mistake in calculation. 6 mantis prawns, one each, for RM 120. Works out to RM 20 per mantis prawn. πŸ™‚
min: It’s called Restoran Gee Seng, located at the end of the pier of a dead end road. There’s a perpetual jam due to creative arranging of vehicles parked there. πŸ™‚
eiling: Yeah, we each had a prawn and I had a lot of crabs too. Stuffed, but very cheap and fresh seafood over there in Tambun (the Tambun in Penang, not Ipoh). πŸ™‚
yienyien: Haha! I don’t know, maybe it’s coz Penang is an island and thus there are a lot of fresh seafood?
They grow pretty big over here, saw them in the aquariums. This place has its own jetty too, for fresh hauls of seafood. πŸ™‚
Cheers: It’s RM 120 for 6 mantis prawns which is really cheap! It’s in Tambun, Penang though. πŸ™‚
Simon Seow: Indeed! I love mantis prawns! I can’t wait to eat it again. πŸ™‚
Dommon: Yup, it’s steamed so it’s plain, but the great thing about this method is that the original taste of the mantis prawn is preserved…very, very succulent and sweet. πŸ™‚
matt: Indeed! I’ll choose this over lobster any day! =D
foodcrazee: I’m not quite sure but I think it was served whole…it’s very easy to peel from the top, the shell comes right off, it’s harder to peel the bottom part, but easier than prawns. πŸ™‚
Yeah, it’s awesome stuff eh? =D
Vickie: We all had one each, it’s a definate must-have dish when you go to Tambun. πŸ™‚
ahlost: Haha! I’ve never seen this around in Sarawak, I know tiger prawns but these are easily several times bigger than tiger prawns. πŸ™‚
yienyien: Heh! Where did you have yours? πŸ™‚
Jessen: …but normal prawns doesn’t taste as sweet and they don’t have as much tender flesh as these beauties! πŸ™‚

  5. you are a bolder Man than I, HB. I wont even eat sardines from Norway, cause of the guts. I got friends fronnew orlens that say the best way to eat eat shirmp or crayfish to stand it on head and slurp its head out. yuck. Like raw oysters. but a rare steak, that is different. I like. with horseradish. I guess it is how you were growed up. I am sure they meant well, but I was served rare duck ( raw in the middle rare) and I did not eat it. later that night, I ate a liverwrust and blue chesse smammich. Which was worse? Shit, I think I will be selectarian. That means I can eat any damn thing I want, but dont have to eat gross things. For eample, caviair. real stuff. form stergeron. oeastrea, perevian, buleugian, so what? Its just fish eggs. But I like calamri just dont tell nobdy its french fried bait, ( Squid). I guess, some times its best to NOT know what you eat. Care for some chitlens? Here is a terrible joke. a member of the jihad dies and goes to heaven. He says where are my virgins? A voice says , you dont get virgins, you get virginians, and boy are they are pissed.

  7. Elaine: Haha! I seriously doubt it. I can’t even fit it into my mouth and I have a HUGE mouth, as you can see. It won’t be right anyway, a waste of the mantis prawn. The flesh is seriously juicy and sweet, you have to eat it bit by bit to savor the taste.
I give it THREE thumbs up! πŸ™‚
