I remember having a batch of fireworks from the previous Chinese New Year and decided to give my girlfriend a surprise at 12 midnight last night (technically, today). I carried the firework cake configuration to her house with my car lights dimmed and called her to come out for a while. I had planned to deploy the fireworks just opposite the road outside the house – a hit and run affair, since fireworks are not exactly legal in Malaysia. π
This is “Universal Battle” a cake configuration of 13 shots (which is not an inauspicious number for the Chinese, unlike the Caucasians) and I drove over to her place with it on my passenger seat and dimmed my car lights when I got to her place before coming out with the fireworks and a lighter.
She was already standing outside when I lit the fuse and was quite puzzled by my “Shh…” motions and gestures to ask her to stay put and wait:
This is the fireworks surprise to cheer Melody up, which didn’t go exactly as planned…but she still enjoyed it. Happy half-weeksary after monthsary, dear! =D
Postmortem:
I could have pulled off the fireworks stunt a little bit better with proper planning. The place was a residential area and letting off (loud) fireworks at night led to a barking spree by all the dogs in the area which woke up just about everyone in the place.
I should think everything through at least three times due to my impulsive nature and stop doing anything while inebriated since it’ll probably not turn out to be the way I expected it to be.
I had prepared a text message saying “Surprise! I love you dear. Hope you enjoyed the display.”, but in hindsight it probably left a bad impression, despite the Hari Raya festive cheer since…well, letting off fireworks in the middle of the road of a residential house is not exactly the kind of stuff parents root for. π
She had the remote so it would have been much better if I had let her in the car, went to a public park, let off the fireworks and gave her a quick hug and kiss before sending her back. It would have been much more meaningful (and tactful) since I wouldn’t have woken up the entire neighborhood. She would have enjoyed the display better in a private moment and it would still retain the Surprise Factor (TM).
Oh well, I’ll do it better next time. π
Melody enjoyed the surprise, and that’s all that matters to me. Cheers all!
That’s really a nice one, hb. If I have a gf, I’ll probably try the same…lol….
Eyew! So corny! Just one month and it’s like u’re celebrating ur golden anniversary already? Ummm…is the preoccupation why u dont reply to comments anymore or are u following in the footsteps of ‘that other blogger’?
your gf is so ‘hang fook’, so jeles haih
That’s very sweet of you, Huai Bin. How it turned out funny makes for nice memories π
It doesn’t matter if it didn’t turn out the way you anticipated. It’s the thought that counts! Fireworks…that’s really so sweet of you, Huai Bin π
Fireworks must handle with care and see you did do so. Many guys like to do somethings special for their one and only. Your is fireworks that said it with bang. When a guy love someone it like fireworks flashing in front of them.
in my experience this is how most good firework surprises end π
Chris Thoo: Yeah, it would have been better if there was an array of fireworks all networked together to go off at the same time…but budget constrains. Times are hard, my friend. π
suituapui: Eh, it’s romantic okay? π
Well, yeah, been busy with the girlfriend and also with work (charity) so have been neglecting the comments for a bit.
However, in the grand tradition of sixthseal.com, I have ALWAYS replied EVERY comment ever since 2002 and I don’t want to break that tradition. Catch up tomorrow. π
Jen: Hmm…you wanna be my gf? π
Pixeldoll: Thanks Pixeldoll! π
Yeah, I could have done it better, at a park at least, which is near our place instead of in the middle of the road of a residential area past midnight. Oh well, like you said, it’s the thought that counts. Cheers! π
Vickie: Hmm…I have NEVER handled fireworks with care. When the HDS (Hari ini Dalam Sejarah – an ambitious project to bring the sixthseal.com archives into the database from 2002 – 2006) is complete, you’ll get what I mean. I do all sorts of stupid stunts with fireworks and firecrackers. It’s a wonder I’m not maimed or worse. Someone up there loves me. π
musique: Heh! Yeah, hindsight is always 20/20. It seemed like a good idea at the time. It’s a good thing there’s no police around or I would have been arrested for DUI as well. π
nice~~~
wish got bf to do that for me
Dude, now every girl wants their BF to be romantic like HB,…and all we wanted is just a GF who’d fetch us a beer upon a snap of the fingers.
It may seem fun but no. It can be dangerous due to accident to my friend playing with fireworks. Fireworks discharge on his hand. Lucky he let go fast so gotten burn on hand and I rush him to hospital. Firework exploded it could had made him lost hand. He trying to mix many fireworks together that cause it . It was stupid and he never will play with fireworks again.
Makes me wish it was 4th of July :'(
*drool*
but you’re taken, haih =.=
very cool HB, its the thought that counts but I think the fireworks is quite a thrill for her. I wish my wife would do that for me! hahahaha
LOL That is an awesome surprise! Although I absolutely hate fireworks of the loud kind – had a scare as a kid and never got over it since. It’s pretty and I love watching it but with my ears plugged like a pussy! LMAO
I remember getting into an altercation with a neighbor when I was 14 or so, he lit one of those “Air Bomb” things right in front of my house while I was standing outside and scared the shit out of me….it must have been a sight, me (in my 5’5″ frame) running at my way older, tattooed covered, 5’10” neighbor….LOL I was savage, I attacked the shit out of the guy. Now when I visit Kuching, we laugh about it….
Aww…its the intention that counts!
its cute tho that you tried to cheer her up (succesfully?)
and why are you driving while under the influence? didnt u learn after your little “scrape” a few months back? and to think…is driving while having a few drinks really worth jailtime (with ur history possible), a massive fine and loss of licence?
like preaching to a wall
Dear Tom,
“and why are you driving while under the influence? didnt u learn after your little “scrape” a few months back? and to think…is driving while having a few drinks really worth jailtime (with ur history possible), a massive fine and loss of licence?”
I guess you have never been to Malaysia.
Malaysia BOLEH! Just donate generously to the Policeman’s Unofficial Retirement Fund and collect your Get Out of Jail card at the door. π
PS: Drink driving is as much the government’s fault as it is the individual’s in Malaysia. Public transport is worse than a disgrace (even worse after 12am) despite the govt (supposedly, at least thats what they tell us) spending billions of dollars on it every year, even in Kuala Lumpur.
It gets worse after 12am, as the only public transport working are Taxis, which charge absolutely criminal rates (like anywhere from 50-100 bucks to drive no farther than 20km).
The only option, in case you don’t have a friend to chauffeur you around, or walk, is to drive under the influence.
in time the family and the neighbours will forget. it was a good effort though and with the best of intentions. though a public place might be better the next time π No need to reply my comment if you are busy. π
Please be more careful with fireworks would not want anythings happen to you or friends. My sisters and brothers play with it one time and fireworks went off and burn my sister hand badly and rush her to hospital. She still has a small scare as a reminder of herself being careless.
That was indeed very sweet and thoughtful of you. I never knew how a fireworks “cake” would looked like and now I do! haha..thanks.
butterscotch: Well, I’m sure you’ll find someone. π
e: Romantic with a (healthy) dash of recklessness and impulsiveness. π
Haha! Yeah, that would be great…and other than beer, that other thing too. π
Wynn: Yeah, fireworks and firecrackers are just like that. I’ve had some discharge in my hand too, and unless it’s the 3″ shells, most wouldn’t give an adult any problems (other than bleeding) as long as you don’t GRIP onto the thing (due to the nature of explosive physics).
What kind of firecracker from hell was he holding that took off his hand? Commercial ones never has that kind of explosive power, it’s always the home made ones.
jessy: Yeah, Independance Day in the US. π
Jen: I can be un-taken too, Jen. π
Wuching: Heh! Doing it in Australia would cause massive fines if you can manage to get the stuff in the first place. π
It’s much easier over here and I just did a drive by, to cheer her up. Loaded the used fireworks cake back into my car and drove back. I forgot to take it out and now the entire car smells of cordite.
Skwermy: Hmm…well, this is a little loud, it needs the propellant to fire the burst up vertically into the sky. It’s not deafening like the Air Bomb thing you described though. I know that one – called “chung tien pow” (rush sky bomb) a double report bane of every neighbourhood.
Jesus Christ, those things are loud (and quite dangerous too, since the initial charge propels it up just a couple of feet into the air before the louder charge explodes). I remember it going into the living room when the thing toppled. Smashed a vase and caused a commotion but no real damage.
You’ve got balls, Skwermy, I’ll give you that. π
Tom: Thanks mate!
Well, I like to come and go as I please so I usually drive my own car. I’m not too intoxicated when I drive but I was on Friday which made me decide to give up drinking for a while.
Working good so far, even with temptation at home (several bottles of Absolut Ruby Red).
I’ve decided not to drink until my sister’s wedding. It has to be for a special occasion or I’ll just be drinking for the sake of drinking.
massive_attack: Very good point there. Heh! But MADD would be very MAD at our rationale. π
Bengbeng: Yeah, I know, it would be better to do it in a public place, as I mentioned in the postmortem. Oh well, I’ll do better next time. π
Erica: Oh yeah, that’s the only serious thing that would happen – burns if it goes off in your hand for certain fireworks. Blisters and all that…gotta hurt when you use a computer to work.
eiling: Thanks eiling! π
Yeah, they call this kind of configuration a “firework cake” as oppososed to the tube launcher type which carries shells (3″, 8″ and 12″). Firework cakes are more popular coz it’s automatic, while you have to reload the tube launcher after every shell. π
