The 7 year (old) itch

old photo

I was browsing through my old photo albums just now in search of photos of my sister when she was younger for her wedding video when I came across this photo. This is (from left) my sister, me, Sing Ling and Wei Ling when I was 7 years old. I still remember the event – it was just after a 2.4 km jogathon that was held at Methodist High School when I was in Primary 1. My dad was the principal at that school then and we had this family sports day event where we ended up on this huge tandem walker thing with my mom taking a candid photo.

first love

Anyway, I had this HUGE crush on Sing Ling, who’s my classmate in Primary 1 at that time. It was my first love (at 7 years of age). I wrote her my very first love letter on a torn out piece of exercise book, and it went something like:

I love you Sing Ling
Please love me
I’ll give you a eraser or a ruler if you love me

I had a really crappy red broken ruler at that time and I have to admit that my budding Casanova skillz was very much at a n00bie stage at that point. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It was funny recalling that incident though, and it made me laugh. Nostalgia, eh?

  1. Jane: Yeah, more warm and fuzzy eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰
Her surname is Hii, she’s the same age as me – 27 now. She’s in Melbourne.
Simon Seow: Yeah, it’s funny to think back to the stuff we did as kids. I was really skinny when I was young and then I got kinda obese and then I got skinny again and now I’m starting to get fat again. It’s a cycle.
p-t: Heh! Even then, I knew the concept of love as a transaction, not necessary material, but a transaction nevertheless. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’ll love you if you love me. I’ll put out if you love me. I’ll quit (insert bad habit) if you love me. It all boils down to that when you strip away all the frills. I’m not that cynical though, I’m a bit the hopeless romantic.
clement: Eh, really? ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s strange huh? I thought I look different from when I was a kid. Friendlier face and all that. My current It’s Complicated (TM) told me that she likes me wearing t-shirts and shorts and with my hair ruffled and unstyled coz I look friendlier and cuter. I seem to have build up a wall of defenses to avoid getting hurt and can only open up to people I really love, usually only one at a time, and usually my girlfriend. I can’t really talk to my parents about my feelings (coz of pride perhaps) or to friends (except some really close ones but I don’t reveal certain things about my fucked up life as well).
The It’s Complicated (TM) is the one that I’ve been really been able to totally open up to for a very, very long time – last one was a good 3-4 years ago. Just pure Huai Bin, no walls, defenceless, I come as I am. That’s probably why I’m a little bit depressed now that things have changed. I know that the relationship has a deadline (refer to statement about my relationships this year) but I didn’t know it came so early due to certain antagonists complicating things.
    OMG! Pity party. Sorry. ๐Ÿ™‚
essentric: You know, that was the shorts that I remember distinctively coz I started masturbating when I was 7 years old as well. It was by accident, involving the swimming pool shower and I think this very pair of shorts was the one I actually came in (without the semen due to my age). Disturbing facts about my youth and a case of Too Much Information (TM). ๐Ÿ˜‰
vincent: Yeah, and I started masturbating when I was 7 too. This 12 year old girl was after me when I was 9 and I was playing doctor when I was 13. I guess I started early. ๐Ÿ˜‰
suituapui: Yeah, that’s the surname. Hmm…if I had written the letter today, I would have said “Congratulations” coz she’s married now and living in Melbourne. ๐Ÿ˜‰
goolooloo: Yeah, girls mature faster than guys until 12 years of age. Girls are usually taller than their male counterparts up to the age of puberty coz they reach puberty faster.
Darren: Heh! I still can believe how lame the love letter was. My mom caught me too, coz I was writing another love letter at home and she wanted to see it so I tore it up but she pieced it back together and gave me a good scolding for god knows what reason.

  4. Wuching: OMG! I didn’t even realize it!
vincent: I can’t read or write Chinese but I can speak and understand conversation in Chinese.
cynthia: Yeah, I guess I started earlier than my peers. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I was the blue eyed boy of my paternal grandmother, probably coz I’m the eldest son of the eldest son. She always cooks for me then, I remember her having this superstition that she should always break the egg yolk in maggie mee when I have an exam that day so I won’t get a zero. Haha!
Kim: Thank you Kim! ๐Ÿ™‚ You made my day, high compliments indeed. Heh!
YingYang: Well, I guess. I was pretty close to her until Primary 4 when she complained about me littering to my sister. She was the class monitor and so was I (there is a tradition of having two in a class – one male and one female) and my sister was a prefect then (being in Primary 6). I got pissed off at that. Now thinking back, it was so funny. ๐Ÿ™‚
suituapui: Haha! You know my mom very well. ๐Ÿ˜‰
She’s psychotic, I tell you, she used to beat me if I got below 80 marks and scold me if I got below 90. There is no praise unless I got 98 (a nod) or 100 (a nod with a smile).
That’s probably why I am so fucked up right now in my relationships. ๐Ÿ˜‰
This cultivates approval seeking behavior at all costs, and I’m never going to do that to my own offspring.
eve: I think she’s already married. She’s going to KL for the banquet and then to Sibu for another one. I’ll send her your regards. ๐Ÿ™‚
jessy: Aha! We’re both early in the art of seduction. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yeah, the green eyed monster. I’m kinda in a similar situation right now.

  5. Haha! I wrote love letters and traced drawings/pictures from storybooks, then coloured the drawings and gave it to the girls I had crush on back then. Yes, 7-8 years old. It’s damn funny reminiscing upon it.

  6. bongkersz: Hey, I did that too! ๐Ÿ™‚ I remember it’s the one that my mom pieced together after I tore it up when she wanted to see it. I was drawing a stick figure of me and a stick figure of Sing Ling and had the names and a heart between the two. The stick figures were holding hands. Haha! We’re similar in a lot of ways, buddy.

  7. hahaha.. I do agree with your description. I bet everyone who know her has the same opinion. LOL
we used to go to the same place for piano in school. I only remember primary school. I think she moves after some point?

  8. Jane: We both on the same wavelength here eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yeah, she’s known for that, unfortunately, but life is strange. The things you get teased about in high school are considered Highly Valuable Attributes when you get out of high school. ๐Ÿ˜‰
She’s in Melbourne now, she was there when I was there as well, I think she went earlier though.
eugene: The kind of “bad memory” I have is called anterograde amnesia. I forget things AFTER the doses of benzos (last time, that is, I’m not on it anymore) but not important ones. I can still remember perfectly the things before that. ๐Ÿ™‚
