A shop which full of culture should be visited by the high class people

jogoya

I headed to Jogoya (which translates to the title of this post – I kid you not) at Starhill for a buffet lunch just now. We had this 50% off coupon which allows us to eat at half price, not too bad considering Jogoya charges RM 78++ for their buffet lunch.

jogoya sashimi

I ate a lot of sashimi – I’m a big fan of anything raw, and Jogoya does not disappoint in their offerings. Other noteworthy dishes are the century egg with salted egg and their “sauna egg” which is a bit of a contradiction to the naming – it’s a cold poached egg.

jogoya drinks

Jogoya also has a decent portfolio of alcoholic beverages – there’s white/red wine, gimlet, “AK-47” (no relation to the shooter), and other cocktails of their own device, some of which were quite tragic and some rather good. Don’t expect vintage years though, it’s a buffet, be happy with the table wine. πŸ˜‰

jogoya queue

I was there primarily to eat as much raw oysters as I could. The oysters disappeared from the bed of shaved ice as soon as it was arranged there so the person preparing the oysters decided to serve it on a person-to-person basis, thus the long queue for the oysters.

jogoya oysters

I think I ate about 8 or so oysters. They weren’t as huge as I’ll expect (definitely no palm-sized oysters to be found) but it was surprisingly fresh and I slurped the poor mollusc straight of the shell without any Tabasco sauce or lime.

Mmm…

jogoya desserts

Other things you shouldn’t miss are the Haagen-Dazs ice cream, desserts, and mini sweet fragrant Thai coconut.

jogoya cockroach

We had the most unfortunate experience of encountering a nymph of the Blattaria order of insects while eating. It must have been attracted by the vanilla scented Haagen-Dazs ice cream on the spoon.

jogoya meaning

Well, like I said earlier, Jogoya means “A shop which full of culture should be visited by the high class people“. πŸ˜‰ I don’t consider myself “high class people” but it sure expanded by waistline by approximately 5 inches during the 2 hours we were there. Thus, if having a potbelly is a sign of prosperity…well, I guess…

Another interesting (but unverified) anecdote, there was a sign by the oysters which states that consuming milk (and dairy products) with raw oysters may cause food poisoning. I have yet to Google this, can anyone corroborate this statement?

  2. HB, I seen people in Taiwan who think they are high class but just snobs. Their manners were the worst I ever seen. Not even good dresser also. All people who are good is high class to me.
The food entry made hungry now ask if Amy would join me for buffet with seafood in Mountain View, CA. Oysters is my favorite with crabs.

  3. Dude, it could be right, I’ll have to prove the interesting fact some of these days when I do not have anything better to do. There is a oyster bar two blocks away from my apartment.
Anyway, we had half a dozen raw oyster in Boston last weekend. Included in the meal were the best Clam chowder (milk based) I’ve ever had and Lobster bisque ( cream based)..and grilled two pound lobster and full flavored Italian chipino.
An hour later, I bailed out of a subway ride, pissed off a few passengers as I dashed to the subway exit and begged to use the “employee only” bathroom that was as cleans as yours during your wild Kuching days. While the wife took the challenge of sucking it in after ….” Is it clean ?” “Well, ermm… looks like Huibin’s toilet”. “No thank you”
As the high pressured, liquid form deposition and stomach cramp was brewing, you should have seen her face, like the look of a Blues guitar player during a intense solo session.

  4. HB, don’t believe what that e was saying about the look of my face, not that serious lar~~~ But did get a good cirit-birit of my year with that half-dozen raw osyters. Hmmm… maybe I should stick to grilled oyster only. I miss Hiroshima oyster so so much. Culinary Institute of America’s raw oysters were the best I have tried to date in USA. *slurp*

Ai yar~~~ I hope you can really try the real raw things in Japan one day, best!
Btw, dear e, it is cioppino, not chipino.
Cynthia, we compete eating when we meet, ok? ^_^ Lalala~~~ first in Malaysia, then either US or Australia. Yum~~~

  5. My understanding of the literature is that shellfish has the highest probability of resulting in food poisoning, particularly raw shellfish. Milk also poses a huge risk unpasteurised but it’s something that’s almost always pasteurised before consuming. I believe milk serves as an easy source of nutrition for bacteria and combining the bacteria of shellfish and the nutrition of milk is what may increase the chances of poisoning.

  6. chefmel: Heh! Well, I figured after all that bread and water thing, it’s time to eat something different. Came up to about RM 50 even after the 50% discount coz of the ++ thing. πŸ™‚
The Bull: Yeah, I am broke this month, seriously. Thankfully, I got my return deposit for some stuff and I don’t have to pay rent for this month and next (it will be deducted from my deposit) so I had some spare cash. πŸ™‚
steben lim: I don’t even know myself, it changes color everytime I take a shower. It’s the bleaching process, colors don’t stick, coz apparently our water is alkaline. πŸ™‚
chris: Thanks mate! I was fine, I’m not known as the man with the cast iron stomach for nothing. πŸ˜‰
Kim Ong: I can probably eat around 30 too, I love raw oysters! πŸ™‚
I had to save space for desserts (and er…drinks) which was why I didn’t eat that much oysters. πŸ™‚
…and the cockroach, that was a bit of a surprise, especially in non food-prep areas, but understandable. I used to work in a Chinese restaurant (little known fact about me) and it’s hard to not have cockroaches where there is food.
Tan Yee Hou: Yeah, it does mate. That’s what makes it so good. πŸ˜‰
cynthia: Definately Cynthia! When you come over. πŸ™‚
ShaolinTiger: Haha! Okay, okay, I’ll get a new shirt soon. πŸ™‚
Naoko: Is Shogun the one at SoHo KL?
There’s another one at SoHo KL, which for the life of me, I can’t remember the name of.
Myhorng: I think the quality dropped a bit but it’s still good. πŸ™‚
Jeff: Where is Shogun? Is it the one in SohoKL or Starhill?
Simon Seow: The girl in the queue? Nope, I don’t know who that is, just someone in front of the oyster line.
binn: I don’t know the way there too…which is why I took the LRT and Monorail. πŸ™‚
Get off at KL Sentral on the LRT and take the Monorail to BB Station. Starhill is just beside.
Vickie: Oh, this reminds me…Jogoya is actually a franchise from Taiwan. πŸ™‚
e: Hahahaha! OMG! That’s a really funny incident, my friend. It got me laughing out loud on a Monday morning, thanks for that. πŸ™‚
Haha! It looks like my toilet? That’s gross mate, I wouldn’t use my toilet back in Kuching again. πŸ˜‰
Ray: It’s not like I’m doing it on purpose…I only have a couple of shirts. πŸ˜‰
Michael (Mike): LOL! At least they didn’t charge us extra. πŸ˜‰
debra fong: I didn’t. My hair has a life of it’s own now. It’s bleached and then colored, so the color comes off every time I take a shower. πŸ™
Jade Zheng: Hmm…I thought the coupons are very widely available. I got mine from a coworker – he had HEAPS of coupons. πŸ™‚
I didn’t know you wanted one, they expire on 30th of April so I went during the weekend.
fish fish: Haha! The way Ed descibed it was really funny though. πŸ™‚
Okay, I shall try it in JAPAN, when I save enough money for a trip there. πŸ™‚
shadowking: …but it’s sashimi! How can you not feel hungry when you see sashimi? Especially when it’s served in the belly of a huge sea creature that’s been sliced and diced by the sashimi chef? πŸ˜‰
    Trey: Hey, great explaination Trey!
Thanks for clearing that up! πŸ™‚
paul: ….it’s the only way to live. πŸ˜‰

  7. This is so odd, I had dinner at Tenji last night and noticed that very same sign which states that consuming oysters with milk or any dairy product would lead to food poisoning.
And interestingly enough, I can’t help but notice the similarities between Jogoya and Tenji. Same coconut, same ice-cream, same metal clip thingy for ordering food. Same thingy for you to put your soup on, same wine too perhaps? lol

  10. lol…..Jogoya i ate there 2 times on the 3 day visit to KL. It worth every penny u pay for it especially the Haagen-Dazs. The bad part is everyone is like rushing for the oyster…. for the first visit i don’t even have the chance to eat any and end up slurping the exotic shark fin soup and during the second visit i stand and wait for the oyster to be serves and take as many as i could. I tot tht they are having a promotion right now…. 2 people eat the 3rd person is free…

Gerald: Tenji! Now that place has palm-sized oysters. We tried to get reservations there but it never happened coz it’s a bit too packed always.
eric: Haha! Unfortunately not, I’m single. πŸ™‚
KY: Yeah, and the place is starting to look a bit dilapitated. :S
chefmel: Haha! I don’t have money to buy new shirts la. πŸ˜‰
Need a sponsor to pimp my wardrobe. πŸ™‚
I only have a couple of shirts, serious.
I’ll go and get another shirt when the paycheck clears. πŸ™‚
cofin: Yeah, the oysters are VERY popular. You really need to snag it when it comes out or it’ll be gone in a minute.
Shark’s Fin? Is that a Jogoya VIP only item? I didn’t see any shark’s fin when I was there.
I’m craving for the sashimi now. Something not too heavy on the taste buds, compared to the lunch I usually have. πŸ™‚

  12. Wow! I just noticed that the gal infront of you on the oyster line looks hot! Btw mate you didn’t answer my last question on who were you having dinner with that night. A date at such a restaurant should be with a love interest. Did you know that oysters are said to be an aphrodisiac… =) Just don’t tell me you went home and had a session with Mrs.Palmer and her five daughters!!!

  13. The Bull: Oh you mean this post? I went with a bunch of people. The girl in front of me at the oyster line is just some random stranger.
Haha! Oysters don’t really work for me. Haven’t been getting any for a while now. Oh wait. Hmm…
