Saya Anti Rasuah

mms

There’s only 1 thing, 2 say, 3 words, and it’s not the ones you think. Saya Anti Rasuah (No to corruption) was this huge campaign done by Malaysia’s finest to increase the admittedly low credibility of the police force with regards to corruption. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist (or a chaos theory physicist) to know how widespread this culture is.

saya+anti+rasuah

Every little kid in Malaysia understands the concept of kopi-o – the euphemism for bribery. It’s sad how corruption can be reduced to “coffee money”, a fairly innocent phrase that suggests you’re somehow buying our hardworking men in blue a hot, streaming cup of caffeine to combat their fatigue during the long hours they pull. It’s just plain wrong.

coffee

I’m not saying that the problem lies with the police force alone. It always takes two to tango and a lot of it has to do with cultural and social mores as well. I must admit that I’m no saint and I’ve bribed enforcement officers several times when I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. It had always seemed to be the “right” thing to do for a victimless crime – the phrase “You senang, I senang” comes to mind.

I’ve never understood why some people get their panties all in a twist when I do that…until now.

Bribery slowly erodes the society’s sense of right and wrong. It can become so endemic and entrenched that it’s nigh impossible to weed out. It can go to the point where fire marshals won’t put out YOUR house fire unless you grease their palms (I’ve actually seen this happen). Or police stopping you just coz you look wrong and searching your car, threatening to drag you off to the nearest station for a urine test unless they’re going away happy with a few extra notes in their wallets.

rasuah

We’ve got to prevent this from happening and the only way this can happen is when everyone stops bribing enforcement officers. Yes, it is easier to just pay your way through, but as the saying goes, the easy way isn’t the right way.

You too, can help Malaysia be a better place by thinking twice before pulling out your wallet. Unless it’s to take out your MyKad, of course. πŸ˜‰

speak up

Do you think that Malaysia needs a change?

Do you think your voice can make a difference?

YES IT CAN!

It takes a concerted effort by all Malaysians to make this a reality. You too, can make a difference by NOT GIVING BRIBES! Malaysia Boleh!

Snap a picture about how you can make Malaysia a better place and send an MMS to 016 602 9788 before 30th July 2009 with your name and location to be in the running for fabulous prizes:

  1. Yeah a serious issue to be tackled. One campaign probably isn’t going to do much, but at least it’s a step in the right direction. Best of luck with it.

  2. it’s really hard to wipe out the rasuah culture in our country.we have been talking about it for years.. it’s in our DNAs already=)
well, maybe we can learn from Singapore..give those officers high salaries and also have a more powerful ACA unit to put those who bribe into the hands of the law.or else it’s just another few millions waste on this sort of campaigns..

  3. Yah I honestly hope more people can stop bribing cops, if you did something wrong man up and pay the summon.
If you didn’t break any laws, just refuse to pay and ask for the summon – you won’t get one.
If more people do this the corruption will stop.

  4. The Bull: I say no now coz I was squeezed one time not too long ago. It’s practically BLACKMAIL, the way they did it.
You can’t say much too coz they’re police. Grr…
crappy booze: It’s okay, I used to always bribe my way through too – only reason I’m not in jail now, to be honest. I just have a record for possession, but that could have seriously brought me down if I had not forked over a 5 figure amount.
    Shirley Snow: It’s Saya (N)anti Rasuah. πŸ˜‰
Jeff: Cheers! Yeah, there was this once the police threatened to drag me off for a urine test just when I got stopped (for no reason – no traffic violations). Grr…
eiling: Yup! It’s on the site. My friend drew that for me (and also made the poster in Photoshop). She’s really good in these things. I think it took her 5 minutes, max.
vvens: Good, good. I used to bribe too, to be honest, but had a really bad experience once when the police sqeezed me for cash despite me not doing anything wrong. :@
    Darren: Cheers bro! πŸ™‚
pm: I replied in the other post. πŸ™‚
eric: Actually, you’re spot on. That would be the only way to eradicate corruption – high pay for police combined with stiff penalties for corruption. Combination of carrot and stick. πŸ™‚
    bongkersz: Thanks mate! πŸ™‚
ShaolinTiger: Yeah, and nowadays I just keep my seatbelt on. I used to hate it, but after a while, you get used to it. I found myself automatically reaching for it nowadays.
You’re right, if everyone stops paying, perhaps the corruption will stop. At least they won’t expect it everytime they stop people. πŸ™‚

  6. never mind. just found out. Bribe. Endemic in the us and south america, also. Not so much in cn, but very prevalant south of the rio grande. Still the same thing, HB, wherever. Integrety? Got it? ( like milk) you either got or you dont. not to much middle ground. ( if you are arguing the finer points, you aint got it). It is absolute. ( and I aspire, but I dont always got it, myself) but working on it;) Tom

  7. Thank you, HB. I just realized, only by reading your site, I have learned a little bit of Malay. And that is a good thing for a dumb ass like myself. “SAY NO TO BRIBES” . Be with God, HB. tom

  8. I wish the government curb corruption and wastage of billion of dollars such as PKFZ. They should instead use the money to increase the salary of the police force. Can you blame them from taking you know what? That is the sad reality. There’s just too much to write about this…u know what i’m talking about.

Rasuah means “bribery” (or corruption) in Malay. Cheers for the comments, how are you holding up over there?
Wishing you all the best! πŸ™‚
    saya boleh: Heh!
Lithiummind: Yeah, I understand…the current system doesn’t really work. πŸ™‚
Jade Zheng: No worries, I used to give bribes too. πŸ˜‰

  10. A Trip To The Racetrack
A group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders accompanied by two female teachers went on a field trip to the local racetrack – Churchill Downs – to learn about thoroughbred horses. When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other.
The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men’s room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal.
Having no choice, she went inside and began hoisting the boys up one by one so they could reach the urinals.
As she lifted one, she couldn’t help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, “You must be in the 5th grade.”
“No, ma’am,” he replied. “I’m the jockey riding Silver Arrow in the seventh.”

  11. truth is, if they’re gettin paid the way they should be, for the work they put in,
there wouldnt be any bribes at all.
just compare our enforcement officers’ salary to the others from overseas. kinda sad.

VisionMan(RuTT): That is a very good question…to which I have no good answer. πŸ™‚
J2Kfm: A police officer’s salary is REALLY low compared to us. Seriously, it’s even lower than most other government people e.g. teachers.
If they’re paid like Singaporean cops, perhaps corruption won’t be so rampant.

“to be, rather then to seem”. Boiled down, it means “No bullshit”. Thanks HB, for your website, and all your hard work. Tom
