I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more…

melbourne shuffle

It’s Hammer Time! (TM). I’ve always maintained that my primary form of exercise is doing the Melbourne shuffle in raves and clubs. I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle – the perils of working long hours in the industry. I’m sure a lot of you out there lack the time to get some proper exercise done due to work and social obligations.

I swim occasionally and have recently taken up yoga counter my less-than-healthy routine of sitting 12 hours or more per day behind a desk at work. Swimming is convenient for me since I live in a condo so the nearest pool is just a press of the lift button away. However, working 12 hours or more per day can put a toll on your energy levels and often you just want to crash when you reach home.

swimming

Thus, I’ve started going for yoga lessons in the weekends. It forces me to wake up early, which is a really good thing in retrospect – knowing that you have to drag your sorry ass up early the next day tend to temper your Saturday night shenanigans somewhat. πŸ˜‰

yoga pose

Yoga is great for stretching them muscles and it does wonders for your mental health too (an important thing in this stress filled world). I always walk away feeling relaxed and at peace with the world.

However, I have decided to talk a more proactive approach and monitor just how many steps I walk in a day and subsequently how many calories I burn. I used to have this nifty cell phone which has a step counter but I lost it during one of my ethanol impaired escapades. In a weird twist of fate, I received the very same cell phone as a birthday present this year.

walk counter

In another interesting turn of events, I got a dedicated step counter from the PRUhealth event I attended. It was specially calibrated to the length of my stride so it’ll be fairly accurate. Mustering up all my determination, I decided to clip it onto my belt and make it a point to walk at least 3,500 steps every day.

The plan didn’t work very well.

I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I sit in the office for most of the day, unless I’m out for meetings. I even take away lunch to eat at the desk. However, in light of my ailing (?) health and skyrocketing cholesterol levels, I am dead-set (er…perhaps this isn’t the best adjective to use – determined then) to walk more every day.

car

I’ll park my car at my condo and walk to work instead. I’ll make it a point to take the stairs instead of the lift. I’ll pledge to do my lunch takeaways myself so I can get them plates of meat moving (its Cockney slang) while I get my PM calorie influx.

Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles to fall down at your door!

Got PRUhealth coverage what. No worries. πŸ˜‰

  1. cynthia: Heh! Yeah, the song is from them…the last line is a giveaway, just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles to fall down at your door. πŸ™‚
KY: I call it no style hairstyle, just wash and towel dry. πŸ˜‰
ahlost: Haha! That’s the problem – nothing happened to it. πŸ™‚
I let it grow long and untamed and never bothered to style it. πŸ˜‰

  2. LOL. I can understand why you find it hard to exercise. Hmmm…I read that having vigorous sex also qualifies as exercise. πŸ˜‰

I haven’t watched the movie though, hope they don’t butcher it. :S
Cheers: Haha! Well, VIGOROUS being the keyword here, and per hour being the other. πŸ˜‰
Good info though, for people who lack the motivation to exercise. πŸ˜‰
    hitomi: Thanks! πŸ™‚

  4. Someone’s tweaked for sure in photo number one!
You should grab a pair of running shoes – Avia come highly recommended. If you can’t run a mile straight, do 4 minutes of walking/2 minutes of running. You’ll drop those extra pounds no problem mate.
You feel like you’re on benzos after lots of exercise too πŸ˜‰

  5. Trey: Heh! I was not only tweaked mate, I was rolling HARD. That’s why I had to practically stare to see anything at all coz faces were all blurry. πŸ˜‰
Interesting bit about exercise, perhaps that’s the new taper plan for me. πŸ™‚
matt: Awesome! I love this song from them. πŸ™‚
dylan: It’s a step counter, nifty, got it at the event. πŸ™‚
eiling: Haha! I was a little bit messed up then. Okay, more than a little bit. I should be thankful I’m here now instead of sweating the small stuff. πŸ™‚
hitomi: Hmm…different strokes for different folks I guess. πŸ™‚

  7. all that said, walk a little, and each more every day. Typical grocerey store run, every two to three weeks, for your edification. Tell me about yours, OK? I drove to the grocery store this morning. There were umpteen cars circling like sharks on chum for a close parking spot. I parked far away, and walked in while the cars were still circling. Walked right past the deli counter ( well did pick up 4 cinnimon day old donuts for a buck ( this is in usd, as the rest of this, otay)- alsways look for the overstock. Picked up 4 lbs of black grapes, at 1.99– well, exspensive( but good for your heart, an I dislike red wine), 4 bannanas, 3 avacodos on sale for a buck each, three fresh tomatoes. 2 onions, cabbage I got. wanted a water melon, but at six bucks, no dice. Looked at all the frozen pre-breaded fish, nothing was on sale. Got a lb of surami crab legs for 2 bucks. picked up some easy to heat and eat staples, cause winter is comming on. ( 2 cans of spagettie, 6 cans soup). A loaf of bread. Cheap English muffins ( lower cal than panckakes or waffles). An 8oz New York strip steak for 2.99, on sale from 7.00: A jar of apple butter, three cheap frosen pizzas ( 3 for 3.39) 5 raw chicken legs and thighs – mumm barbeque. a 32 oz bag of brown rice for 1.19. 12 oz chesse. 1/2 gal milk. 16 oz cannola oil for 2.29. ( we use mostly olive oil, which would be 4 bucks, but some things you need a higer smoke point., like for baking or frying.) one cadburuy “sympony” candybar, 4.25 oz ( and you better not eat it on the way home, either). Ok, as long as I can get 2 cans of hurricane beer, and a a sixpack of cobra. well… ok… just dont forget my smokes. and look for a good used dvd ok. Holy Moses, $122. for that? Yeah, But I learned not to buy our smokes in the grocery store, at 4.50 a pack. Hell, 12.00 more and I could have got 10 packs. And dont go fretting, I picked up some ramen and mac and chesse. Nobodys gonna starve. plus, I did get this youplait chesse cake yougurt. Well damn, you want ice cream, go get it your self, mrs jabba.

  9. tom r: Yup, I’m trying to swim more too! Gonna walk to get some groceries later too coz my car is STILL in the workshop. It’s getting ridiculous, the amount of time they’re taking to fix it.
I’m lovin’ the view at your place, my friend. Nature at it’s very best.
Thanks for the detailed price list, I’ve always found grocery shopping to be fun (I love to cook) and seeing how much things cost in other countries is a very interesting read to me. πŸ™‚
