Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh, KK

yu kee bak kut teh

Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh is arguably the most famous BKT place in KK. It’s located at Gaya Street. There are two BKT outlets there but the original is the best – you can see the difference with your naked eye, the locals flock to this place like bees to honey.

yu kee bak kut meat

Yu Kee BKT is always packed while the other…well, it lacks in that department. Jerine also mentioned that she can smell Yu Kee from meters away while the other stall is odorless. She means that in a good way of course, the distinctive aroma of herbs from well cooked BKT.

yu kee bak kut stall

I like Yu Kee coz I went there to eat straight out of rehab…it was the best meal I ever had considering the crappy food they serve inside. The difference between Kota Kinabalu Bak Kut Teh is that they serve you with small bowls of stuff instead of a huge melting (clay)pot.

yu kee bak kut teh mystery

Mysterious part from a pig – I don’t know what this is

Tofu (no photos coz I DON’T LIKE TOFU!)

It was a pretty decent dinner but you want my honest opinion? It is the best Bak Kut Teh in KK and I remember loving it the last time I had it. However, those were different times when even an extra piece of chicken was much appreciated. Now that I have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it barely warrents a post.

yu kee bak kut teh us

It cost RM 72 for our meal. Do check out Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh if you’re in KK but for good ol’ BKT, go to Klang.

  1. fufu: Yeah, it’s the KK way! πŸ™‚
I’ve seen it in Klang too though – BKT in small bowls I mean.
This is good but I think it was better when I just got out of rehab coz I was so deprived of good food in there.
Now that I’ve been out for years, it didn’t taste the same to me. πŸ™

  2. that mysterious part is pig belly/stomach and very spongy n nice… πŸ™‚
i like bkt oso n will go with my kl khaimah if i visiting kl… πŸ˜‰
    i tink u like real tofu eyyy??hehe
lol at the glass they use to serve beer…if mistaken ppl tot its chinese tea..haha

  3. HB, interesting dishes. I never seen before and would to know is it Chinese or Malaysian type of food? It look very yummy to me.

  4. Hey J, good to see a girl who knows how to use the tongue, so kinky. HB is so lucky. So when can we expect HB junior? I will have to organise “red” eggs.
Oh ya, please feed HB lots of crayfish. Does a red bendy crayfish remind you so something? Ha ha.
As for the mystery bits, if it’s just chewy it’s stomach. It’s it crunchy, then it’s ear.

  5. Jerine: Haha! That just sounded a bit wrong coming out. πŸ˜‰
ah nel: Aha! Thanks for the info! πŸ™‚
Pig belly, it tasted good! I liked it.
Haha! I just don’t like tofu in general unless it’s something like mapo tofu eaten during a Chinese style dinner.
It is Chinese tea – Chinese tea is complimentary, beer is not, how nice if it’s the other way round. πŸ˜‰
WEEN: Yes! The regal and sombre faced patriach in old portraits…unfortunate I can’t get the expression right. πŸ˜‰
Michelle Chin: You can always cook BKT yourself! The packaged herbs are pretty good too. πŸ™‚
chefmel: Thanks Mel! Pig stomach, I couldn’t identify it at first. We had all the different BKT dishes that Yu Kee offers to sample a bit of everything.
Oh, that kind of tofu I like. πŸ˜‰
Vickie: BKT is a Malaysian thing, although Singaporeans would beg to differ. πŸ˜‰
However, it did first originate from China, it’s “tea bone soup” typically eaten as breakfast before dock workers go to work. πŸ™‚
rocket: Haha! It’s nothing like that bro. πŸ™‚
Oh it’s stomach, it’s chewy. I’ve eaten an entire pig’s head too (not by myself, but it’s an entire pig’s head). Tastes pretty good, cooked kung pow style. Would be better with some crayfish, I’m sure you’ll agree. πŸ˜‰
KY: Yeah, and we finished nearly all of it. Heh! πŸ™‚

  6. Will try to remember the eating place when I’m in KK during Gawai.. hehehehe πŸ™‚
But I want to go try Klang BKT one day.. huhu.. never had the socalled best BKT so far 😑

  7. Babi…I love BKT! now that’s a LOT of meat & spareparts for 2! Beer with BKT, omg.. so enjoy!!
The mysterious part from a pig – is either pork stomach or ear. but it looks like the stomach. heehee..

  8. what jerine’s nose damn sharp hor.. as in can smell fm so far away (not as in cut urself sharp:P)
yar, i’ve been here before. rhb bank on the corner rite? totally yummie. how come u didn’t order the spleen? that one is the smelliest with that weird crunchy yet slimy texture that i find so blardy addictive!

  9. Dude, you can’t feed J so much or she will turned into Rosanne Barr, or do you have this thing for oversized women. πŸ™‚
As for your kung poa pig’s head, I am sure it would be yummy after slow cooking it. How does the eye taste like? That’s one thing that I have never tried.
Back to friends with benefits, how come J so eng to fly all over the place with you? Her father mega loaded and she doesn’t have to work ah? Wah seh, good deal man.
Pork leg picture – see how small the bones are, they must use very small piggies. Damn, that would be so tender. Damn, I am so evny of you liaw.
Shit can’t think of anything funny about crayfish, owe you a crayfish joke mate.

  10. Choonie: Haha! She’s also fun to travel with, not a diva at all, except she takes HOURS to put makeup on. T_T
ahlost: Okay! This is good, it’s always packed at night but not as good as Klang BKT. Klang BKT is the best! πŸ™‚
Come over, I bring you there.
annna: Yup, that’s the best – eating BKT and drinking beer. Haha!
We managed to almost finish it, and we had rice to boot and two large bottles of beer. Was quite full by the end of it.
    It’s pig’s stomach! πŸ™‚
ciki: Haha! Yeah, we were comtemplating on which stall to go to, walking back and forth. This was the one I remember as being the best but I was tempted to try the other one too. We finally chose this coz Jerine says at least she could smell the BKT while the other place doesn’t have that aroma wafting out.
    Yup, that’s the same place!
OMG! I missed out on something? πŸ™
I told the owner that I wanted a bowl of each and every thing that they have. Okay, will try it next time I’m in KK! πŸ™‚
rocket: Haha! She’ll be fine, she has very high metabolism! She’s so hot (as in body temperature) it’s almost scary.
Anyway about kung pow pig’s head they chop it all up so much you can’t even recognize what is what anymore so I just eat it.
We both took 1 day annual leave to go.
Yup, the pig’s leg was great! πŸ™‚

  11. hey dude, it’s prefectly ok to have a thing for oversized women, we won’t think any less of you. If J is constantly hot, then she need to skinny dip. Pls make sure your camera has new battery OK?
Well, I have two weeks in Sg and Kch next month, what wonderous delights shall I push down my gob? Might get a few udang galah (crayfish?)and throw them on the bbq and make my own mayonaise/tartare/aolie sauce. Yummy.

  12. Yah our tastebuds change over time and well let’s face it the way we eat in KL, it’s hard to match it anywhere else.
I sometimes go back to places I thought were great when I first came here, but now I realise I just didn’t know any better..and in fact they aren’t really good at all.
Our tastes all very atas now, what to do.

  13. having just finished bkt myself today… i can testify that u 2 have a stomach of 4-6 person to be able to finish all that!

  14. rocket: Haha! Yeah, but the thing is I don’t. It’s not a criteria for me, personality matters more (everyone says that but it’s true – at the end of the day you want your wife to be your friend, someone you can talk to).
Have fun with your BBQ! πŸ™‚
eiling: Yeah, I wanted one of every single thing they have to offer so I can try them all. We managed to finish almost all of it too! πŸ™‚
The intestines are awesome! Chewy and soft. Mmm…
ShaolinTiger: Yeah, I totally agree. In order to reset your tastebuds, I can be witness than a stint in a confined community does wonders to reboot your sense of taste and appreciation of food. Prob why I got so fat so fast when I got out of rehab. Heh!
mickey: Hahaha! Well, it’s not that much actually, the bowls are really small and we ate slowly. πŸ™‚

  15. Yeah I always cook them. Like twice a year ( When I eat too much I sweat more = = ). But it’s not up to the par as the ones back home. πŸ™
    Cos there are intestines!!!

  16. hb… your porky post reminded me, klang got another famous pork product-the klang king of ribs (pai kuat wong). used to be near the indian cinema… now moved to here: Restoran Peng Heong Hakka Paikut, 2, Lorong Gudang Nanas… & dun forget to try their soy bean too!

  17. Michelle: Eh, why would you sweat more when you eat too much BKT?
You can get intestines and other offal at the local butcher. Heh!
Good luck with your next BKT cooking session and come back for the real thing soon! πŸ™‚
mickey: Nice! I’m a big fan of that and Guinness pai kuat. I shall go check those two places out. Thanks for the tip! πŸ™‚

  18. headsteadi: I wish I was pork tongue, that sounds good right about now. Pork ear sounds good right about now. It’s pork stomach though. πŸ™‚
