Keeping your head above water

water start

An abnormal fear of water

water fear

I like to bring around a compact camera that I can slip into my pocket for capturing moments – it’s like an auxiliary brain for me. I bring a digicam everywhere and if you’re clumsy person like me, you’ve no doubt dropped your digicam countless of times.

I have even dropped it in a waterfall, much to my chagrin. The digicam was a complete write off but luckily the memory card was still intact. Sigh. The quote which goes “Fire, water and government know nothing of mercy” is true indeed…until now! (at least the water part)

I have recently acquired a Sony Cyber-shot TX5 camera which meets all my requirements – it’s water-proof, shock-proof, dust-proof and even temperature-proof!

cable car

I decided to take it for a spin up in Genting under different conditions to see how well this camera performs. I intended to go to Fraser’s Hill but decided that Genting gives me a more exhaustive repertoire of lighting conditions and shooting opportunities.

This is my favorite photo. The Cyber-shot TX5 has excellent low light performance. I used the Handheld Twilight mode and it captured all the psychedic details in this rave-meets-bowling center perfectly.

I haven’t bowled in years and Naomi beat me by 3 points. >.< It was luck more than anything, I got a strike once and a spare in another but most of my attempts went down the drain (pun intended).

The next day was spent at the theme park where I covertly recorded several of the rides. *feels like James Bond* smirk

This video illustrates just how good the recording frame rate of the Sony Cyber-shot TX5 is. It’s that ride in Genting called Space Shot where you drop so fast the seat of your pants actually lifts off the ride for a second.

The best thing about the video recording function in the TX5 is that it records in Full HD at 1280 x 720! I wish I had this when I went to KK coz my other digicam only records at a paltry 640 x 480 – which was awesome…in the 90’s. >.<

I also like the easy mode switching in the TX5 – there’s Scene Selection, Anti Motion Blur, Inteligent Auto Adjustment and…iSweep Panorama!

A very angry Whopper

Okay, now here’s some proper shots in Gourmet Mode:

I went to Manhattan Fish Market to check out their new offerings – it’s a new menu based on American Idol:

Flamin Tuna Pie

Flamin’ Tuna Pie. They really mean flaming when they say it, the cheese is heated until it’s warm.

Awesome presentation and a great dish but my favorite, hands down goes to:

shrimp on the rocks

Shrimp on the Rocks. Fresh and juicy shrimps served on a bed of ice with Cajun Honey Mustard as the dip. Delicious!

Well, if you’re been using digicams for a long time you’ll know how difficult it is to get panoramic shots in the past. It used to be all manual – take a photo and part of that will show up for you to align with your next shot. It’s just painful to have to do that and most of the time it doesn’t come out right.

genting panorama

However, with the iSweep Panorama mode, you just need to literally sweep your Cyber-shot TX5 to capture a panoramic scene! The wonders of modern technology!

Underwater video is a breeze to use too. You might get a couple of weird looks since water-proof digicams aren’t that common (underwater casings alone sometimes costs more than the actual digicam). I’ve actually gotten stares and even a shouted warning – “Hey, careful, your camera is touching the water!“. Haha!

water zen

Unlike the bulky monsters in the small water-proof digicam segment, the Sony Cyber-shot TX5 manages to come up with a tough water-proof, shock-proof, dust-proof and temperature-proof digicam that is sleek and slim. You’ll be proud of slipping this baby out when you need to take photos and it’s sturdy enough to go anywhere with you.

Even underwater so you can take photos like this:

rainbow fish

Trust me, a water-proof digicam is a sound investment – hey, water damage is pretty common, someone might even spill their cocktail on your camera on a weekend night out. πŸ˜‰

You have the option of taking photos is 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio too!

teddy bear

Nuffnang is running a contest called My Water Moments – just take a photo and explain how it connects to the theme of The World’s Slimmest Water-proof camera. Hint: Write about how the photo would be improved if you have a water-proof digicam like the Cyber-shot TX5. It’s water-proof up to 3 meters! You also need to mention the features of the cam before submitting the URL here.

The best 3 entries will be given a free Sony Cyber-shot TX5 digicam! =D

naomi water

The Sony Cyber-shot TX5 retails for only RM 1,499 and comes with the ExmorR sensor for low light performance. It has a burst mode capable of 10 frames per second at 10.2 MP which makes it ideal for me for those of you who’ve endured my constant requests of taking several shots in a row coz the perfectionist in me demands the best shot. Heh!

Now, I’ll only need to ask you to take one photo…in burst mode. smirk

I think your post was good too! πŸ™‚
Go get one, the TX5 is pretty useful, can bring it to bodies of water without fear! πŸ™‚

  4. yuetmui: Yup, I have one too! Pretty nifty eh? Don’t have to worry about dropping it or going to the pool with it. πŸ™‚
Mindy: Haha! Yeah, water is not good for digicams, except this one. Cheers! πŸ™‚

  5. ciki: Heh! I USED to have a great fear of heights too. Phobia. I am afriad that I would unconciously step off the ledge when I’m on top of a tall building. I don’t know why but it went away and now I can stand heights. Not spiders though, I still hate them. πŸ™‚

  6. eiling: Yeah it’s a great digicam since you don’t have to worry about it being under water. I love the TX5 coz unlike my other waterproof can, it’s slimmer and easier to carry around – plus it has HD recording features! =D

  9. Magnolia: Heh! But snakes are nice (to eat). πŸ˜‰
It’s good as pets too! πŸ™‚
hitomi: The TX5 is shock proof. πŸ™‚
The best thing about it compared to my other one is that it can record SOUND during underwater video mode. Amazing. My previous one could not. πŸ™

  10. i wonder if anyone’s ever gotten a seizure while bowling there. πŸ˜› and every time i see that place or cosmic bowl, i half expect to see some mat rock or ah beng happily feng tao-ing in one corner too!

Haha! Same here, the ambiance is really something. πŸ˜‰
ahlost: Yup, the TX5 would be useful while snorkling to take photos of the fishes in KK! πŸ™‚
The underwater video mode has sound too so you can narrate (which is a bad habit of mine). πŸ˜‰
    rocket: She’s just a friend. πŸ™‚
This was the trip where I lost RM 35,000 bro, dun remind me dy! πŸ™

  13. Friends with benefits, you are such a dawg. Don’t be such a cry baby, you have to man up and win back your losses.

  14. hitomi: Heh! I think the TX5 can withstand my clumsiness considering it’s both waterproof and shockproof. πŸ™‚
    rocket: No la, friends only.
Haha! I’m not going to, am planning a couple of vacations instead. πŸ™‚

  15. You still have your one year free airfare with AirAsia, right? Eh, should take this opportunity to plan honeymoon liaw. Or you can do Amazing Race type vacation, wake up each day and go to a random destination.
Don’t forget to invite me to “makan” ok?

  16. rocket: I am planning vacations but then there is one minor issue – I don’t have the cash after the epic Genting loss. Oh well. πŸ™‚
    Budget travel!

  17. yes dude, budget travelling, no more expensive hotels. bugdet accomodation has it’s charms too. sweaty foreign backpackers, cockroaches, backed up toilets, maggi mee’s. so much for you to look forward to.

  18. rocket: Yup, I’ll just do that and bring my TX5 along – short trips so I won’t have to bring my notebook too. πŸ™‚
Anonymous: My mistake, HD then. πŸ™‚

  19. what a neat thing. when I was a kid, ( i mean 5) i was deathly afraid of water. I mean crying on the edge of the pool. I got booted in. by my dad. and i did not like it much, my mom had never learned to swim . Imagine that. from bristol. england. a seaport. a nurse in the raf. after the war met my dad in south america. flew. fearless. except. that one little thing. water. I love water. it is my friend. thats like flying. was a af officer. flew, jumped, hang glided. but I am afraid of rollercoasters. go figure? its like snakes, bats, bugs all ok, but spiders… creep me out. bad fashion… I guess you would call it a it makes my damn skin crawl so just change aqua to arachnid, I like to eat crab… and it dont prevent me from eating crab but spiders of the sea… everybody has somthing. God bless hb

  20. trying to keep yor head above water. the picture was so evocitave… hey… you can pick up change at the bottom of the pool. the pressure differential… my ears usally Pop about 9 feet or three meters. and driving . 3000 ft they pop. I live at about 3000 feet above sea level. its normal to me. but its your inner ear. eustation tubes. thats like diving. never go alone. ever. 150 feet or 33 meters dont sound like much, right? hell thats nothing. the legnth of …. wrong. hey comon, just a bit more. every damn year, somone inches a little closer to the edge of the falls where i live, and dies. about three a year, in fact. every damn year. never dive alone.

  21. tom: Yeah, I remember doing that as a kid! Diving in the swimming pool for coins. πŸ™‚
Hey, then the TX5 would be perfect for you since it’s 3 meters water-proof. πŸ™‚
Buddy, hang in there okay, we’re all messed up in our own ways. You are in my prayers. πŸ™‚

  22. Sony always has the best stuff in the market! hehe
p/s : ahem, you put on quite a bit of weight πŸ˜› But no worries, you look better than when you were thin many years back when I started reading your blog! Hehe.

  23. Darren: Yeah, the TX5 be perfect for those trips! The 3 meter waterproof would be nice to go on snorkling trips with and capture photos. I love the fact that the underwater video mode can capture AUDIO too! πŸ™‚
chefmel: Yup, I like the TX5’s touch screen and sleek look, it was why I switched to Sony about two year ago. πŸ™‚
Yeah, I know I’ve put on A LOT of weight. T_T

  24. fiona: Hey, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you have to be Nuffnanger to join the contest. You can join now! Nuffnang is the best! πŸ™‚

  25. HB, i like you post with demo in the water!
We have TX-1 at home but never dare to try go near water. There’s a Logo with a “Fish”, when i press it, it shows 10M & ratio 4:3, correct? So, i can bring it into the water?

  26. polly: Thanks! πŸ™‚
I’m not sure if the TX-1 is water-proof, you better check the manual. The fish logo is for underwater shots but as far as I know, the TX-5 is the only waterproof version.
Maybe you can check the box or manual?
    Cheers! πŸ™‚

  27. university student: Thanks! It was a good trip, except for the fact that I lost 35k. πŸ™‚
I like the TX5 too, have been using it as my primary digicam. πŸ™‚
polly: Yup, err on the side of caution coz as far as I know TX5 is the only water proof one. πŸ™‚

  28. I just came back from 1U with 2 sets of Sony T5(1 green and 1 black) and an S Frame. Btw,the sales dude wanted to charge me separately for the casing and 9g memory I told him that my friend bought the darn camera with the works for $1500(I remember you stating the price in your previous post)and he reacted immediately by saying that he made a mistake and agreed to my suggestion that the camera does indeed cost 1500 all in. I gave him a brief Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson look and told him I would take 2. I think I momentarily stunned him with my request coz his reaction time was a wee bit way off the mark. Anyways,to cut to the chase,I ended up buying $3199 worth of Sony products with freebies such as tripods and World Cup umbrellas throwned in. I’m gonna ‘play’ with it sometime this weekend and see whether it is really as awesome as the impression you gave me when I read about it on…

  29. After some intense fiddling,my conclusion is that the Sony TX-5 is the mutha of all cameras of it’s range and size. And the price is reasonable too. Btw,both cameras were,er,paid for by a certain hill resort located in a neighboring state.

  30. bankerdragon: Wow you got two Sony TX-5? Impressive! Why on Earth would you need two of the same camera though, just curious.
Heh! Yeah, I like the cam a lot too.
Haih, don’t remind me about the hill resort. T_T
I’m glad you won though. πŸ™‚
