Eating snake meat

snake denuded

The slithery one who tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden is served in a course of sorts in China. It’s like Peking duck, the entire snake is prepared and consumed. Your epicurean journey starts with picking the snake you want (snakes are generally quite expensive even by Malaysian standards).

a snake

The live snake is killed before your eyes (making it dead – call me King of Stating the Obvious) and the expert chef stems the flow of blood from the decapitation of the reptilian by some kung fu application to certain veins and arteries.

snake preperation

The snake blood is the first course of the meal.

snake descaling

Next comes the snake gall served in a glass of high proof alcohol.

snake skin

The snake is de-scaled and the snake skin is served as a tasty appetizer.

snake wine

You can also opt to have a snake head wine at this point.

However, I’m going to get into the meat of the post (pun intended) by describing the main course – snake meat. It’s cooked to perfection, Guilin style. I chose the cooking method that is recommended by the chef, a Guilin resident.

snake meat

How does snake meat taste like? Well, I’ve had python before – that was tough and rather dry. However, this tiny little snake makes for a delicious main meal. There are bones but a surprising amount of meat attached to it as well.

eating snake meat me

I found snake meat to be juicy and while I’ll like to say that it tastes like chicken, it does not. smirk

eating snake meat

Snake meat has a very distinctive taste. Words will not do justice to it (you have to try it for yourself, just like the Matrix). It’s tender and juicy, adjectives I would never expect to describe snake meat with, based on past experience.

It’s a little bit on the sweet side too. If I was forced at gunpoint to describe how it tastes like, I’ll say it tastes like the breast meat of chicken crossed with veal. The texture is a little like eel (but not really) – it’s hard to describe, it’s kinda like that but has more of a meat mouthfeel.

snake dish

I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and finished the entire Snake Experience (TM). It is really good stuff. Do not miss the chance to taste snake meat if you come across a live one. It’s just that good!

  2. eiling: Heh! That’s the nude snake – it’s what it looks like after it’s been de-scaled and the skin cut off for the appetizer! πŸ™‚
I tried to eat it but there’s no meat on the snake head and the skin is so slippery. πŸ™
Jess: Haha! I thought the last one was arranged rather artistically – there’s the snake head, the snake skin, and the snake meat on a bowl of rice! πŸ™‚

  3. The head is most likely to be poisonous, ergo the itchy nose. I still can’t get over the level of hygiene in the sink.
where is princess? haven’t seen her for ages?

  4. rocket: Heh! Yeah, that’s China for you. They don’t exactly put a lot of emphasis on hygeine. πŸ˜‰
Oh, Cayd you mean, yeah I just saw her last Saturday. πŸ™‚
Michelle Chin: It’s actually pretty good Michelle! You should try it! πŸ™‚
kampungboycitygal: Haha! This is China so I don’t think they bother about hygiene all that much. This was at a reasonably nice restaurant too.
…I think most kitchens are like that though, have seen the back of some dai chow places that are equal or worse. πŸ™‚
Yeah, you have an adventurous palate! I like! =D

  7. haha im really enjoying your past couple of posts – strange eggs, gall bladders, now the whole snake!
i’m glad u like it! i find the texture is hard to describe because the type of snake and the way its cooked is a huge factor. i had a three snake soup in china and it was double boiled, that was like eating chicken necks cooked the same way (very tender).. then another time it was stir fried… bit more like chicken.
would love to try the skin! in the pix it looks like fish skin πŸ™‚

  8. rocket: You know, the toilets in China really do not have doors! I took a photo of men shitting, even at a very touristy place, which I would expect to have doors!
She’s doing fine, and she’s not an MU supporter la. Arsenal. πŸ™‚
Cammy: It is pretty delicious! Snake is like Peking duck, gotta have the full monty – the entire works from blood to meat. πŸ™‚
headsteadi: Haha! I went to the kitchen – they usually don’t allow people in there but since I am not a resident and am genuinely interested in having the full snake experience, they obliged.
I don’t know what kind of snake it is, they have a Chinese name but I forgot what it was. I was quite drunk when I got there already. πŸ™‚
Jess: Snake is quite delicious actually, you must try it when you come across it! πŸ™‚
    steph: Thanks Steph! πŸ™‚
The three snake soup sounds really interesting! Yeah, it looks like mini sea cucumber actually, except with the distinctive markings of the snake on it. πŸ™‚
    It’s very, very chewy.
I agree, it’s all about how the snake is being prepared. It tastes different in different cooking styles. πŸ™‚

  10. HB, well China still backward in some places and even in Beijing. Been to the malls and they lack seatings for people who just want to rest their feet for a while same at the airport. Restrooms are the pits and some do it outside for that reason too.

  11. chefmel: Haha! I arranged it on purpose – the snake head, the snake skin and the snake meat – basically the entire snake in a bowl of rice. πŸ™‚
Michael (mike): Yeah, I wanted to take a dump at this tourist place but to my chargrin found out that the toilet does not have doors…nor toilet papers…no water. T_T
Lion: The snake head wine is pretty good though! I just like eating exotic animals. πŸ™‚

  12. What’s the go with toilets with no door? Do people in China steal doors or something? Shit, literally, I will have to bring my own bag when I visit China. πŸ™‚

  13. rocket: I don’t know…beats the shit out of me. I’m not sure where the toilets-with-no-doors rationale comes from too. Haha!
Some people use umbrellas to shield themselves. πŸ˜‰
ciki: I think it’s kinda cute! An adorable little snake peeking out at you. πŸ™‚

  15. umbrella, fuck, they must be shooting in the wrong direction.
I googled about the missing toilet doors and here are the result.
    * Wood meant for toilet doors have been reallocated to build timber frames for housing and other important buildings that give purpose and usefulness to China.
    * The money saved from toilet labour costs have gone into other schemes that offer support and welfare to Chinese people.
I wonder if they wipe their bum.

  16. The basin to kill the snake is a bit disgusting. And I can’t imagine drinking a wine with snake head in the cup. Anyway, I’m not willing to try out the Snake Meal like this. It’s a bit over for me.

  17. Lion: Heh! No side effects except for an annoying itch on my nose for a couple of days. Perfectly safe to consume. πŸ™‚
rocket: HAHA! Alas…well, snakes can never be domesticated unlike dogs and cats. πŸ™‚
Interesting, that anecdote about China. I think they do wipe their bum from tissues that they bring along. I didn’t bring any. πŸ™
undergraduate: Yup, but this is in China, so it’s clean by their standards. πŸ˜‰
