kfc

I passed by the newly relocated KFC at KLCC with Jeanie a few days ago. I haven’t eaten for 24 hours prior to this (we were down with a bug) and was quite keen to get started. I noticed they have a new promotion going on – the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop with mushroom gravy.

The latest version!

I remember having KFC’s O.R. Chicken Chop back in 2006 so I was keen to check out the new and improved version. We both ordered it and this seems to be a whole different incarnation. The platter of the good stuff came with a chicken chop, some potato wedges, sweet corn kernels and mushroom sauce served on the side.

This is KFC’s ’06 varient – you can tell by the smaller photo – that was the standard size in my blog back then. :)

Chicken chop is a uniquely Malaysian dish – created by Hainanese cooks back when the British ruled the lands. However, it has become a standard feature in a lot of places now. KFC’s variant is slightly better – it’s also de-boned so you can eat the entire drumstick (chicken chop is always made with a drumstick) but it’s battered and fried in the tradition of KFC’s Original Recipe.

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop (circa 2011) is very crispy on the outside and retains the tender chicken juices on the inside. The have also improved on the mushroom sauce this time around. I like how it’s served on the side so you can decide how much you want on your chicken chop.

However, the best part about the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop is the addition of sweet corn kernels. I love sweet corn and this provides a whole new dimension to the dish – there’s a sweet component when you shovel some of the corn into your mouth and it goes very well with the chicken chop – a very nice touch!

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop with mushroom gravy combo retails for RM 9.90 with all of the above and a drink of Mountain Dew. It was so good we finished everything except for the potato wedges (my stomach has shrunk during the 24 hours without food).

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop with mushroom gravy is a wonderful option when you pass by a KFC outlet the next time. It’s quite different from their 2006 incarnation and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

…it’s great comfort food! :)

  1. I ate this for lunch today too! :-)

    • Yeah, it’s pretty good eh? I like the sweet corn, it’s a very tasty addition.

It goes very well with the chicken chop. :)

      • Hi Huai Bin, yes it is very affordable compare to other places. The mamak at my office always overcharge and I like eating at KFC because it’s cooler. :-)
9.90 with drink is consider cheap in my work area.

        • Yeah, I know what you mean. Heh! Mamaks tend to overchange. Which area do you work in?

Yup, anything under RM 10 inclusive of a drink is cheap where I used to work too. :)

  2. hmm its nice to see that prices havent really changed so much in KFC. Wanted to try it so badly but was put off when i was told by a friend that the portions were kinda small….

    • Yup, it’s a very affordable meal for under RM 10. :)

It’s not that bad, the one I had was pretty big, a regular sized drumstick made into a chicken chop with lots of trimmings.

I couldn’t even finish the potato wedges bro. :)

  3. looks so tasty.. i havent try b4 :P

    • It’s delicious! I love the sweet corn – always have a soft spot for sweet corn. :)

You should check it out! The combo plate is quite filling, couldn’t finish the wedges. :D

  4. I hope the KFC here will have this in their menu!

    • Hello Lynthia! If I’m not mistaken, it first appeared on the menu in Malaysia in 2006.

However, this year’s version is much better – there’s sweet corn! I love the stuff. Heh!

I’m not sure if it’s available at the KFC over at your place but if you see it, it’s worth a try. :)

  5. mate, that’s too much info. isn’t the missus suppose to lap the gravy up?

Why is it called a chop? Seriously, a chop? It’s a chicken thigh, that’s the correct name, stupid people at KFC.

    • Heh! I didn’t write that one, there’s someone impersonating me on the blog. I’ll do the list of words that requires approval again. :)

Actually, it’s not a chicken thigh bro. Chicken chops are ALWAYS made with a drumstick. :)

It’s a deboned drumstick – the reason why it’s called a chicken chop is probably lost in the annals of Hainanese cuisine and their work as early British cooks but chicken chop is always a drumstick. :)

      • Oh must a chicken chop made of drumstick only? I found this on a web.
        http://www.nibbledish.com/people/yaokui/recipes/chicken-chop

It suggests chicken thighs there… Just curious… P

        • Interesting link! :)

Thanks for sharing bro, appreciate that!

Well, to be it MUST be made of chicken drumsticks only and the only remaining bone that’s left after you’re done is the tip of the drumstick. :)

A chicken chop must also be fully deboned, except for the end of the drumstick.

I guess you can include the entire leg too but I’ve never seen a thigh as a chicken chop. :)

  6. Maybe today I will drop to the KFC and look for chicken chop with mushroom gravy ..with sweet corn
(as recommended).. my kids might love it very much!!

    • Yup! The sweet corn comes with the chicken chop combo meal, as well as a drink.

I’m sure your kids will love it. I’ve always loved KFC and sweet corn as a kid. Heh! :)

      Enjoy! :)

  7. They should make KFC sushi. Seriously. Lots of people would buy that!

    • Yeah! That actually sounds quite delicious. Heh!

I wonder if the KFC in Japan has something like that. ;)

  8. How does it compares to Marrybrown?

    • It tastes much better than Marrybrown’s chicken. :D

I’m not a big fan of Marrybrown’s chicken really, it’s not something that comes to mind when I think of fried chicken. :)

  9. I went and had the same thing again less than a week after the first try, gotta love KFC :D

    • Yeah us too! We had it again about 3 days after. Heh! It was takeaway though but it still tasted the same. Awesome stuff. I particularly liked the corn. :)

  10. wow phb, when did u change ur theme to food&travelblog?

  11. I didnt know the set was that cheap. It’s tempting me to try it out :)

Well, maybe at KLCC on my way home.

    Have a great weekend bro.

    • Yeah, it’s the cheapest set in KFC if I’m not mistaken and it’s really delicious and filling too. :)

Yup, check it out at KLCC, that was the kfc branch we went to as well.

You have a great weekend too bro! :)
