Guns. Lots of guns.

guns

I just love this shop. I found heaps of them in Hong Kong around Mongkok. They have exact replicas of most firearms – except these aren’t replicas per se. It uses 6 mm BB pellets loaded into a shell casing, which goes into your magazine. The Airsoft guns are remarkably realistic – you rack the slide back and a shell goes into the chamber. The pellet is released when you squeeze the trigger with a burst of propellant.

It’s made with stainless steel parts so it’s about as heavy as a real gun. I really like how these things work – they can be used as a prop or for paintball games, with a harder hit (steel BBs can kill a bird).

Unfortunately, you can’t get these things into Malaysia. The person told me he can break it down into three parts and I’ll have to take the risk in bringing them back. However, the largest part still looks like a piece from a firearm and replicas like these (realistic make, color, shape and to a certain extent – function) is not legal in Malaysia.

…and guess what? It just so happened that we were selected for secondary inspection at customs when we got out. It’s a good thing I didn’t buy it then. ;)

  1. oh my. Lucky you didn’t buy one and bring it back to Malaysia. I got friends managed to brought a few in though lol. I also heard a story before that someone put one in a hand carry bag and HK Police with M16 came to the boarding gate to investigate lol.

    • Yeah, it’s a good thing I didn’t bring any back. Heh.

Wow, that is interesting! MilSim games are pretty popular in Japan and Hong Kong so I would have thought it’s pretty common. :)

    • I know!

It just happens sometimes, a lot of people were asked to go through that on the three flights that came in at the same time – India, Iran, Hong Kong.

I think it’s the Iran flight. Oh well, I didn’t break the law so went through just fine. :)

    • Yeah, but still it is a rather ridiculous law for people who just wants it for MilSim games.

It’s a bit like paintball – there are pros and cons, paintball has a more audible sound and a visible paint with a hit, while using Airsoft makes you more CAREFUL.

It depends on how you want to play the game I guess. With realistic loads (13 per clip) and the harder hit of BBs (it penetrates skin), you’ll be much more careful when you play coz you have limited ammo (as opposed to the ridiculous loads a paintball marker can have) and it hurts much more than a paintball (especially if you have a no-minimum-distance rule).

      Adrenaline rush max. :D

I still like paintball, I was just thinking of Airsoft games to add a twist.

I used to play with eye protection only for paintball, but for Airsoft games you gotta have full facial protection. It makes for a very interesting game though. :)

  2. the wisest decision made. Haha.. why you looked like someone whom would smuggle firearms into malaysia and that’s why they have to do a secondary inspection? So lucky la… must buy lottery already.

    • I think it was more of the flight issues than myself personally. I don’t fit the profile – they usually go for single males travelling alone and I wasn’t.

Iran inbound flights are subject to more stringent security checks and it was just our luck that we landed with it. :)

    • Heh! I doubt that mate. I have been travelling quite a bit this year and have never been stopped for a secondary inspection before, even when I was travelling alone while backpacking Europe.

I think it’s the flight scheduling issue. :)

    • Haha! No it’s for MilSim games. It’s kinda like paintball but you tend to be more careful coz you have a limited, realistic load – e.g. 13 per clip only per game.

It hits really hard too so when you’re playing you tend to be REALLY careful and plan with your team before scenarios. It’s a lot of fun! It’s like paintball, except you have to wear full facial protection (as opposed to just eye goggles when I used to play paintball) coz BBs hit hard.

The adrenaline rush is quite intense coz you know it’s going to hurt and you only have a couple of shots, unlike paintball. :)

    • Yeah, there actually is a difference. Haha!

I just use the words interchangeably coz Airsoft can shoot BBs too.

However, a traditional BB gun is very different from an Airsoft gun, we have a lot of imports from neighboring Indonesia in Sarawak, those are quite powerful and not suitable for MilSim games. It not only breaks, but penetrates skin. :)

  3. haha…you are much luckier than me. The excitement of holding these BB guns overwhelmed me last time when I visited the Philippines and I actually dismantled the parts myself and distributed all other small parts among my friends with myself bringing the biggest part that resembles the letter “L”. Guess what? Everyone passed through Philippines check point except me and I was ‘invited’ to a meeting room for a small chat. Luckily they trusted that I’m just a enthralled tourist and let me go. hahaha

    • Yeah, that’s the part that is difficult to conceal – the chamber, slide and grip cannot be dismantled and has a very distinctive L shape that customs are trained to look for.

It’s a good thing you got out alright though. Cheers bro! :)
