Proof that eating durians with alcohol won’t kill you

spinning deck

Okay, now this is an established fact. Anyone who believes otherwise is an:

1. Idiot
2. Superstitious idiot
3. Ignorant idiot

(Sorry grandma)

Anyway, I have eaten large quantities of durian and drank prodigous amounts of alcohol at the same time to no ill effects.

Except a hangover…but that’s to be expected.

durians

I was out during the weekend with my friends and but before that I helped my dad open a couple of durians and ate some.

pan2 eddy

We started drinking and playing pool at a lounge and then moved somewhere where they have a…

…livelier live band. smirk

I started drinking this beer called Zoror Beer (RM 20 per jug, can’t beat that) in earnest and I knew I drank quite a lot because I have stupid photos in my camera.

pan2 jo

Me and Jo. These are not my glasses. They are Eddy’s – he put them on when I asked him about this chick – thing is he doesn’t need them. Thus, I put it on and went out front to see if it would make the girls look hotter or whether its the beer goggles.

mahal kita

Jo giving me a cheat sheet on Tagalog. I keep forgetting and she keeps telling me and finally she just wrote it down.

pan2 pinoy chick

As the night goes on, the memory becomes rather hazy…

BUT

I remember eating three whole durians when I got back, drunkenly stuffing myself full of the King of Fruits before I went to sleep. After all that drinking.

…and I’m still alive.

    • Actually, I’ve tried it a lot of times in the past dy. It’s a myth, that’s why I keep on doing it.

      …coz it’s simply not true. πŸ™‚

I filmed myself in the past doing that, was drinking cognac with durians and yes, I am still alive. πŸ˜€

…but I’ve done it heaps of times before and there’s no scientific basis to it.

Okay, if you tell me high doses of Panadol + alcohol = death I would tend to agree. It’s a complex reaction involving enzyme pathways and scientific stuff but basically, paracetamol and alcohol in large doses will *eventually* lead to death.

Not instant…but it’ll slowly damage your liver.

…but the important thing is that it’s *scientific*. There’s nothing scientific about durians and alcohol except a vague Chinese belief that it’s “heaty”.

    • Yup, it’s just not true. πŸ™‚

I’ve tried it with all sorts of alcohol – beer, cognac, vodka, whiskey, gin, wine and I’ll have to say

      MYTH BUSTED

I actually don’t realize most of the time that I’m mixing intentionally until someone tells me “Don’t eat those durians, you just drank a lot of XO” and I’ll shrug and eat them anyway. πŸ˜€

Glad to hear you’re all still with us. Haha! πŸ˜‰

  2. because what you drink is BEER…not WHISKEY! you stupid idiot…try drinking black label or henessy vsop before eating durian then only talk, you fool…stop making yourself look like a dumbass every time writing such post can?

Oh wait, I’ve done all that in the past, whiskey, beer, gin, cognac etc and I *still* survived, so…

      CHALLENGE FULFILLED! πŸ˜€

BTW, Hennessy VSOP is a cognac, not a whiskey. I have tried that, and JW’s Black Label (and Red Label for that matter) and various other different alcohol in large quantities with lots of durians.

      …and I’m still alive. πŸ˜‰

Sorry dude, you’re an ignorant idiot who still believes in the vague concept of “heat” when there’s no medical or scientific literature to back it up.

      Done, done and done, bro.

The thing about Sibu is that the people at the places you go to kinda gets to know you and you can do certain stuff that would get others kicked out e.g. invade the stage, rock the DJ console, etc etc.

I was just playing around. Not a DJ unfortunately. πŸ˜€

  3. hahah yah, supposedly it’s hard liquor and especially those “heaty” type of hard liquor that one should avoid. beer’s deemed to be cooling thus reverses the effect.

or something like that, i wouldn’t know :S

    • Interesting! Okay, CNY always has more cognac than whiskey so I’ll try it with the former. Again.

Because I *really* have a lot of durians. I don’t know where they came from.

      …but hey, I’m not complaining. πŸ˜€

    • …but that’s because I’ve already tried it in the past and know it doesn’t do any harm. πŸ™‚

I…er, *used to* do other more serious interactions on a daily basis e.g. benzos with alcohol (former in amounts which will kill normal people without tolerance), benzos with opiates (which is really quite dangerous but once you start doing it you just don’t really care coz nothing beats the combo).

The only thing I do not recommend is GHB + alcohol. Both are dis-inhibitors and they induce memory loss in large amounts so you can end up taking a massive overdose. 😑

I just talked to them about it (ate more durians for lunch) and explained the psychosomatic and placebo effect.

Maybe you’ll get sick if you *believe* – I don’t know, sounds like an extreme psychosomatic reaction to me, but best way I can figure it out.

I don’t believe in it so I’m fine.

Happy Chinese New Year Aud! πŸ˜€

    • I’m not bold. It’s just false. πŸ™‚

Seriously, there is an article in a local newspaper about a man dying after eating durians and drinking alcohol.

What kind of shoddy half assed reporting is that?

It doesn’t happen, there’s no medical reason why it should.

It’s perfectly safe to combine the two. πŸ™‚

      Happy CNY Ellis! πŸ˜€

    • No worries mate!

It’s just not true, have been debunked a lot of times by a lot of people but some people still believe it.

I’ve eaten lots of durians with plenty of alcohol in the past and I’m fine. πŸ˜€

…but the power it has in Chinese communities is quite strong.

Right here in Sibu, a lot of places don’t even sell Coke anymore coz of the scare – the places that do sells Taiwanese/Japanese Coke, which is at least 3x the price of regular Coke. It’s ridiculous when you think about it, it’s not a vector for transmission and it doesn’t live long outside the human body or else we’ll all be catching it from mosquito and toilet seats. πŸ™‚

Have a good CNY bro! πŸ˜€

  4. You’re home!!!??? You said you’d be flying in today (16th)? Hope can meet up sometime… Btw, you have difficulty remembering “MAHAL KITA” (We’re expensive)? Duh!!! And is that may be a BROAD hint from the Filipinas…? LOL!!!

      • Haha! I was quite inebriated that night. It sounds like that phonetically. This is at Pan II, the new (at least new to me) place where they have a pretty decent live band from the Philippines. πŸ™‚

It’s better than the one playing at Hijau Lounge right now, but downside is they don’t have a pool table. Upside is we go to the original Pan for karaoke quite often and the manager is the same guy, so have a lot of leeway in doing stuff, like getting behind the console and playing with their DJ deck. πŸ˜€

    • Yeah, that’s what I though too! I was lucky, a friend of mine asked me about Monday so I went to check my itinerary. This was on Friday.

I realized that I was flying on the 14th (Saturday morning) so I had to rush to get everything done and pack. I didn’t even have time to buy any clothes for CNY. It’s a good thing I didn’t miss the flight coz I checked the itinerary the day before. Phew.

      I’m back bro, let’s do lunch. πŸ˜€

I totally agree Jovis, durian is awesome stuff! πŸ™‚

        • Heh! Well, I like doing stuff like that – if it doesn’t make sense, I’ll challenge it.

Hell, I even play chicken with things that have been medically documented – hitting LD50 for quite a few pharmaceuticals and chemicals in the past, benzos + alcohol, benzos + opiates etc etc.

I guess I’m just that kind of guy. *shrugs

  5. ah! the real question is… is it dangerous … to drink and get tipsy. DEN eat durian.. that would be quite funny.

and i guess alcohol and durian should be conflicting each other cause alcohol is cold base and durian is heaty.

but yea, the real question is. tipsy+eating durian. wake up with holes in your hands!

    • HAHAHA

Okay, that is the best question so far bro! πŸ™‚

My answer is…yes. Choppers and opening fruits with spikes ain’t exactly a good idea when you’re drunk.

…also you’re apt to change the bed sheets the next day coz you fell asleep after eating all that durian and getting it on your clothes (and transferring it to the sheets).

      Erm…at least I did. Heh.

Yeah, that’s a good point, opening durians when you’re tipsy = not a good idea. πŸ˜€

  6. Wait, did you drink alcohol while eating durians or after that? I’ve not tried that myself but I can already imagine it making me have a hangover with a sore throat the next day.

    • I drank before and after eating the durians – I ate it twice. πŸ˜€

Well, it’ll give you a hangover for sure, but that’s from the alcohol.

      I didn’t get a sore throat. πŸ™‚

I’m back in my hometown and unfamiliar with where all the things are so I couldn’t scull water like I always do when I’m in KL to stave off hangovers. πŸ˜€

That’s why I got a parking ticket today.

I heard you get fined for even throwing a cigarette butt on the floor.

No bribes coz too many people. (RELA + police = about 10 in a team)

Welcome back and see you then! πŸ˜€

  8. hi bin..we have heard it in the news or newspaper that in some cases, alcohol and durian caused death… to me, this is probably due to one person’s health condition at that time he or she decided to take the much debated combination… one man’s health isn’t another man’s being anyway… so yeah, it doesn’t cause death in everyone but people who has high blood pressure/hypertension should avoid this combo… meanwhile, enjoy while you still can, but don’t do this too often k?

    Reply
    • Yup, I’ve read it in the local papers too. Shoddy reporting. πŸ™‚

I think the person probably died from other causes. Liver cirrhosis maybe. He just happened to be eating durians at the time. πŸ˜€

  9. Im a westerner who has recently developed an addictive taste for durian. I now eat it by the truckloads. By the way, I also drink by the truckloads but this isnt a recent thing. I find it hilarious that people tell me not to drink with durian. When I say why not they say “You WILL Die!!”. So I tease them by counting down….10 seconds till my head explodes. Coming from a western science background the concept of something being too “heaty” as a basis for health decisions really just makes me laugh, although i respect the culture from which the concept comes. The only question now is who will make the first durian liquour. I think a durian and mangosteen cocktail would be great and may even balance from a chinese medicine perspective.

  10. Yeah, I’ve done that many times before. Durian before or after beer, wine, whisky, sake, Champagne … don’t remember cognac. As far as I’m concerned, myth busted.

  13. Ive done that too and I’m still alive. There’s some fact to it though, researchers in some jap uni found that certain chemical in durian slows down or stop the production of the enzyme that helps to breakdown alcohol, you stand a higher risk of getting alcohol poisoning. That’s not the point, I’m trying to make anyway. You were with a bunch of hot gals n you went home alone to eat those durians. Wtf dude????!!!! You should have invited them home to eat YOUR pricky fruit!

    • Yeah, you won’t die from it. πŸ™‚

I’ve read that paper too, it’s not been peer reviewed and while I think it may be true, it only applies if you have an ultra low alcohol tolerance (in which case you won’t be drinking) or you’ve drank too much (but it really takes a lot to get alcohol poisoining, speaking as an ex-alcoholic, I could drink 1 liter of neat vodka straight from the bottle daily (the Smirnoff Blue variant with 50% abv, would look for that vs Smirnoff Red due to the extra value from the additional 10% of alcohol – and alcoholics have no shame in putting that in the boot and taking gulps over the course of the day straight from the bottle).

I’ve also drank 2 bottles of neat 750 ml 40% gin over the course of a day, straight from the bottle, and I’m still alive. I think the people were drinking ridiculous amounts of alcohol since it usually happens at Gawai (a harvest festival here) and would have died with or without the durian.

Oh, one of those is my friend’s wife and the other is a singer at a pub, not the girls I go after.
