…and it’s not my fault!
This guy rear ended me while I was driving along LDP just now. Anyway, if you use that highway you’ll know that it’s almost always perpetually congested. I was moving at a leisurely 20-30 km/h with the start and stop traffic when I suddenly felt an impact from behind.
I got out of the car and noticed he was still inside, looking a bit lost and shocked. I just said βDude, what’s wrong with you?β and he got out and apologized.
He said a car cut into his lane so he was forced to cut into mine and couldn’t stop in time before he hit me.
There was a looooooong line of cars behind us but surprisingly no one honked so we moved to the side. I wanted to lodge a police report to claim insurance but he wasn’t very keen on the idea and wanted to settle it privately.
I was also in a rush and the damage to my car wasn’t that bad β he hit the inside of the bumper and probably damaged the rear proximity sensors. His car was much worse off. I asked him how he wanted to do it coz he mentioned he didn’t have a lot of cash on him and he offered RM 200.
He seems like a nice enough guy, and I’m due to fix my bumper and all that anyway, so I agreed and we left it at that. These things happen anyway and it’s basically a minor fender bender. π
your taillight cluster is broken π it seems like your damage is greater than him… this kind of damage can easily reach RM500 π
Crap. That’s existing damage, he didn’t hit me that high up, his car is lower, so he hit the part where there’s still a bit of blue paint at lower left.
It dented the *inside*, where the bumper should be, it’s relatively mild, but structural damage can be expensive. π‘
Oh well, I’m due to fix it anyway. I hope the taillight cluster won’t be that much, it cost me RM 300 last time I changed it. How much do you reckon damage to the internal bumper component will cost?
Thanks bro! π
Ahh well… at least you’re ok π
Yeah, it’s just a minor fender bender. No worries! π
The guy who hit me was apologetic and nice about it so I didn’t pursue it, it’s technically not his fault if someone really cut into his lane and forced him into me. He offered me RM 200, I don’t know how much the damage will cost but oh well, shit happens, didn’t ask for a mechanics quote since he mentioned he’s a bit broke.
Thanks Charmaine! π
True, LDP is really congested and it’s always worse when drivers don’t seem to want to obey the traffic rules. He probably has his reasons for wanting to settle it there and then and privately but it’s good to know that you and the guy are both okay. .
Yeah, I’m not perfect either, I’ve been known to break the rules from time to time too, but this was not one of the times. I was just cruising without switching lanes when that happened.
I don’t know if what he said is true, about the car cutting in and insurance thing, but he has an honest look about him and he gave me his card and number so I’ll give him the benefit of doubt.
I reckon he has his own reasons for wanting to settle it privately instead of lodging a police report and getting insurance (which is what I wanted) and since he was so apologetic and polite, I didn’t pursue it, and he also mentioned he’s quite broke so I felt for him la, since he had to go to ATM to withdraw money. π‘
It’s no big deal, I just accepted what he offered coz I consider it to be a token sum. It’s exactly coz he was genuinely trying to make amends and nice that I did that, I wouldn’t be so nice if he was rude. π
Luckily both of you were ok, but it is a pain to get cars fixed, especially the bill which comes with it!!! What car do you drive, I’m guessing a Vios?
Thanks bro! π
Yup, I drive a Vios and the bills can be a killer, once paid over RM 8,000 to fix my car. π‘
glad that you’re okay! not so for your poor loupo (since most guys regard their car as wifey duh) though
but you’re being kind, which is good! π
Heh! Thanks Constance! π
Yup, I’m fine, and I have to fix the car bumper anyway. Just realized that I couldn’t close my boot after this, the impact messed up the locking mechanism.
Oh well, I figured it’ll be my good deed of the day. Haha. π
As long as both of you are fine, I ‘d think this is fine. But, LDP is really a super congested road. I used this route everyday when I was working in KL previously. I’m glad i’m at Penang now. haha
Yeah, LDP is always congested but I use that highway a lot. π
Heh! Well, on the downside the roads in Penang seems to be rather narrow. Cheers bro!
As long as nobody got hurt is fine….but i hope u got his info or contact. Cause he might get somebody advise and lodge a police report on you and if there is no report on your side, then u might get into trouble for not lodging a police report.
If this do happen in the future where both of you agree to settle it instead of insurance/police report, please have both of you to sign on a piece of paper with both name and IC no on it saying will not lodge a police report. you might save yourself from a lot of trouble.
Its good and kind to be a great person, but must take care of oneself too.
cheers….
Hello Jenson!
Thanks for the advice. π
Yup, we exchanged numbers, I’ve got his card and most importantly, I also recorded a video of him stating on camera that he wants to settle it privately and the amount (RM 200) he offered and me agreeing.
Just in case, you can never be too careful.
Cheers mate! π
Lucky both of you are well.. usually when we got into accident and if the person immediately apologise before we got angry, I think easier to settle rather than going to police and report etc… the hassle π no one wanted an accident to happen also π
Yeah, but I’ll still prefer to settle it with a police report and insurance. I just thought he’s a nice enough guy and he mentioned he’s quite broke and together with his insurance problems, I figured it’ll just be faster to settle it privately, it’s no big deal to me.
Thanks Jess! π
Ya…RM200 is hardly enough, I’m sure, seeing that yours is not a Malaysian car…not even for a set of lights and if you need any touch up done, it will be more. Ah well, accidents happen…and it was nice of you to settle amicably and just let it go like that. Some people can be real difficult even when they’re in the wrong.
Yeah, I was nice to him coz he was apologetic and wanted to make amends. I wouldn’t have settled like this if he was rude.
I reckon it wouldn’t be enough too – just found out that my boot won’t close coz the latch was damaged by the collision – the lights and bumper is existing damage – thus, he rammed inside the bumper compartment, which messed up the boot latching system.
Oh well, things like this happen.
Thanks Arthur! π
HPB: Los problemas te persiguen.. y te alcanzan casi siempre!!
Just kidding Dude, the good thing is you are Ok.
Heh! Thanks bro! π
Yeah, totally agree, that’s the most important thing, cars can be fixed.
where’s ur bumper? O.o RM 200 won’t fix that.
Yeah, I reckon as much, that’s existing damage, need to fix the bumper and lights and also fix the damage done to the boot latch and rear proximity sensors.
Just noticed that the boot won’t close after that accident.
Oh well, at least this bumps it up on my to do list. π
>>Just noticed that the boot wonβt close after that accident.
you got rope?
Heh! I don’t but I can get it but I don’t see how it would be of help, considering there are no anchor points for the rope. π
Well, sometimes it’s just unavoidable no matter how careful we are on the road.
At least the problem was settled in a nice manner, although the compensation won’t be enough. π
Yeah, accidents happen, can’t help that, at least it wasn’t really bad – it could have been a lot worse if both of us were traveling at a high speed.
…so it was a good thing that LDP was at a crawl so fastest we got was 20 km/h or so.
Imagine a collision like that at 140 km/h – I don’t think we’ll be injury free, much less be able to drive away. π
Oh well, the compensation was a token sum only, could have gone to a mechanic for a quote but didn’t have the time.
hey, leave you for 12 months and you get into an accident.
mian-kia, 200 is plenty if you know what to do
go cham-chia-tiam and buy second hand parts belly cheap
12 months? Why 12 months?
Haha! Nah, that would be inviting disaster, using second hand parts for essential functions like rear proximity sensors, lights and boot latch.
I used a non-original light (front) once and *water* got into it after those spray car cleaning sessions – cheap parts can end up costing more in the long run. π
Dude, over here, the golden rule is NEVER apologize at the scene of accident, not even an “Ooops” because if you do, heh, the other person may get a rather articulate lawyer and sue your ass off.
Yeah, that’s the rule over here too, I never apologize coz that immediately puts you in the wrong.
Legislative action is very rare over in Malaysia, but the “Don’t Apologize” rule applies too. π
I guess he’s lucky to meet a nice guy like you who would accept the RM200. Should have made a deal with him that you get his IC no and tel no so that you can call him if the costs of fixing your car is more than RM200.
Well, I do have his name, number and all that – it’s all in the card he gave me. π
Yeah, I reckon it would cost a lot more than just RM 200 – the impact broke the boot’s latching system so my boot can’t even close properly now. π‘
Oh well, it’s done, gotta fix it this weekend.
