Home made deep-fried Mars bar

deep fried mars bars

Deep-fried Mars bars are the stuff of legends. It originates from fish and chip shops in Scotland and is the epitome of unhealthy eating! I decided to make my own using a entire new bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) to give it a healthier veneer. πŸ˜‰ I not only did it with a Mars bar, but also battered and deep fried some other of our favorite candy bars.

candy bars

  • Snickers
  • Mars
  • Twix
  • Kit Kat Chunky
  • Cadbury Crunchie

I opened up a new bottle of fairly good quality EVOO – the bottle costs about RM 30 and you can’t reuse the oil since deep frying Mars bars causes the oil to turn entirely black (a snippet I heard from an interview in Scotland, where the battered deep fried Mars Bar originated) and chocolate will sink to the bottom.

deep fried mars bar recipe

Here’s my recipe for the deep-fried Mars bar:

  • Aroma Banana Fritter Flour
  • Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Mars bar (and the other candy bars)

plating

This project was done for our anniversary – I wanted to make Ling something sweet which also means something to us. Those are our 5 favorite candy bars and I wanted her to try the notorious battered deep fried Mars bar for our anniversary.

evoo

It’s very simple really – I heated up the 500 ml of EVOO in a frying pan until it’s hot (contrary to popular belief, fair quality EVOO can be used for deep frying – you won’t reach the smoking point) and prepared the batter.

batter

I should note that this brand isn’t ideal as it doesn’t coat the chocolate bars properly. I have beer batter meant for fish and chips from NZ in my pantry but I totally forgot about it. The banana fritter batter only has baking powder, flour and salt so you can use those three in the right proportions if you want.

My first test was done with the Cadbury Crunchie bar – I had hoped that it’ll melt the honeycomb center but it didn’t. I also realize that the batter was too thin and fixed it for the rest of the chocolate bars. I then battered and deep fried the Twix, Kit Kat Chunky, Snickers and then Mars last – after I have perfected my technique.

black oil

I coated the Mars bar with the batter and dunked it into the hot oil. It tastes a while to melt everything. 1-2 minutes is ideal since it melts down most of the chocolate bar inside the batter while retaining its shape.

Deep fried Mars Bar verdict:
It’s the best! The gooey caramel and nougat melted while the chocolate was runny – biting into it is awesome. The crispy batter gives way to a hot mess of goodness! Surprisingly, Snickers gives Mars a good run for its money with the addition of peanuts.

Twix did really well too, the biscuit inside softened and turned it into something *magical* and I loved the deep fried Kit Kat Chunky as well. Crunchie was disappointing coz the honeycomb center didn’t melt but the other awesome candy bars more than makes up for it.

eating deep fried mars

You wouldn’t believe it but between the two of us, we ate all the candy bars! I made my dear promise to eat half (she ate more like 1/3) and we both agreed that the deep fried Mars bar is a delectable, if somewhat expensive venture (due to the use of EVOO).

We loved it! Just be prepared for the sugar rush of your lives! πŸ˜€

    • It’s more like Candy RUSH! πŸ˜‰

The sugar in all those candy bars are intense.

Yup, I just bought a bottle of EVOO and I’ve used this brand to deep fry before so I know the smoking point is higher than needed…thus I used the entire bottle to deep fry the Mars bar. πŸ˜€

I heard deep fried Mars bars is something that only tourists order in Scotland though and most fish and chip places don’t like to do it coz it turns the oil black.

…but it’s still an awesome way to eat a Mars bar! Crispy, hot, and melted!

    • Yup, it’s a really calorie and fat loaded snack! πŸ™‚

A Mars Bar that’s been deep fried!

    • It’s supposedly created in Scotland in a fish and chip shop! πŸ™‚

I heard only tourists go for it though. Haha! I always wanted to do my own version of it so I did it for our anniversary.

Thanks Eunice! We’ll stay *sweet* together. πŸ˜€

    • Yup, the deep-fried Mars bar is legendary in Scotland for being an ultra fattening and unhealthy snack…but a delicious one! πŸ™‚

      It’s notorious but soooo good!

The batter holds the Mars bar while the nougat, caramel and chocolate melts so you’re left with a sweet and melted mess when you bite into the crunchy hot batter!

It was a great anniversary weekend spent together.

We couldn’t find any deep fried Mars bars here too and I really wanted her to try this sinful treat so I decided to make my own.

She ate it with ChokaBlok Cookie Dough Mon-Star ice cream (the second last photo) but I wanted the pure experience. I wish I had some chips to go with it! πŸ˜€

    • Nice! It’s a really delicious treat – trick is to chill the Mars bar slightly first. πŸ™‚

Hope yours turn out to be awesome Mel!

    • Haha! I ate a lot of candy bars when I was in university. πŸ™‚

I’ve always wanted to do my own homemade version of a deep fried Mars bar.

This is quite a success, but a bit of a waste of EVOO.

I’m glad it turned out well though – I used other candy bars first before going for the deep fried Snickers and Mars bars.

      All the best Adele! πŸ˜€

We had some Japanese limited edition Oreos too – made of soft cake instead of biscuits. I should have fried that too.

I would say it was heavenly good and delicious especially when the caramel oozing out from the melted chocolate. Awesome dessert!

    • Haha! I’m glad you liked it dear! <3

I forgot to deep fry the special Oreo that we have - the ones from Japan, not made of biscuit (not cookies) but the special "soft cookies" which is actually a cake.

I think that would have been good deep fried.

We can do this again dear! Need to fatten you up! *hugs*

    • Haha! I ate this in Australia, it was first created in Scotland. πŸ™‚

Fish and chip shops don’t really like to do it though, it can turn the oil black due to the chocolate leaking out. Some places does it.

It’s good eaten with chips (the kind in fish and chip shops).

  5. The honeycomb candy centre would not have melted because honeycomb candy is made by heating sugar up to 150degC then adding Bicarbonate of Soda and letting it cool and harden. The boiling point of olive oil is lower so it would never have melted.

You should try making honeycomb candy yourself! It’s really simple. Then after it is set, you just hack it into pieces and dip in chocolate.

    • Interesting! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the awesome information Mela! It’s much appreciated.

I didn’t know that – if I had another bar, I would have kept at it until I melted the entire batch. Haha!

Cheers for the tip, we’ll try making honeycomb next time! πŸ˜€

  6. Oh man using the whole 500ml of olive oil for deep frying !? Dude u could also use neuvida cooking oil, much cheaper than olive oil (I think)

    • Yeah, unfortunately, I only had EVOO in my house at that time – unopened at that.

No worries, it was meant to be opened and used for just such and occasion!

I’ve had deep fried battered burgers before, but never donuts!

I’ll do it for my next experiment!

  8. I can imagine the amount of cholesterol being accumulated, but special occasions like this definitely requires something sweet and something memorable.

I really admire your creativity, HB. I don’t think many people would’ve realized that candy bars can be deep-fried, adding it some crispiness instead of the usual chewiness (from the caramel).

    • Thanks Ciana! πŸ™‚

I used the Cuisipro pen that I bought in Melbourne to do the plating too. It’s my first time, using a chocolate dessert – the ones that comes in a cup, it’s a US brand that doesn’t require refrigeration and I was surprised at how easy it can be used – just like a syringe!

I didn’t do it well though, gotta practice on that.

Yup, deep frying candy bars really brings out the flavors – melts the chocolate and caramal and nougat, with a crispy and hot batter to hold it together! πŸ˜€

I want to try making it too since I bought some travel exclusive Oreos which are coated with chocolate. It’s really expensive but you can only get it in certain airports so it’s all good.

The deep fried Mars bar is best, with Snickers coming a close second.

It’s best to chill the candy bars first but I found out that room temperature (at an air conditioned condo with two 1.5HP units going at 16 degrees Celsius for a 500 sq ft area) also works.

The deep fried Mars bars are awesome – melted chocolate, nougat and caramel all runny and warm, practically bursting out of the crispy and hot batter when you bite into it! πŸ˜€

    • Yeah, it’s not something you eat everyday. πŸ˜‰

It’s awesome to be able to make this once in a while at home though – not just with Mars bars but with other candy bars and cookies. It’ll be an interesting project!

I loved our deep fried Mars bars – warm and soggy on the inside with a crispy and hot batter holding it together!
