brother card 23

I just got a birthday card from my sister…23 days after my birthday. How appropriate, considering I’m 23 this year. πŸ˜‰

nz insufficient postage

My sister, if you didn’t know, is practicing medicine in
Christchurch, New Zealand. No, that doesn’t mean I get the fringe
benefits of having a doctor for my sister. I wish you luck if you’re
planning to pull off doctor shopping techniques with her. She wouldn’t
even script her only brother, nay, her only sibling, benzodiazepines.

I have been trying to get her to give me some collectibles like pens
and notebooks, the sort of stuff pharmaceutical companies gives out
with names of recreational mediations on them, but I’ve never seen the
shadow of those. I have also been trying to get her to get some of
those “physician samples” of recreational pharms with neat packaging
but she won’t bring those back either. It’s just my luck that I get a
straight laced, law abiding sister.

If I had a sibling who appreciates recreational pharmaceuticals, I
would have taken the liberty of sending heaps of dextroamphetamine,
fentanyl lollipops, oxycodone and benzodiazepines with “Happy Birthday
– Enjoy! I know you will!” on it. I imagine that’s why I didn’t go into
medicine…I would have my license revoked very quickly, I suspect. πŸ˜‰

bday04 huai bin

Today, the 5th of April, 2004, is the day I turn 23. I don’t feel
older (that’s what people always say, pardon my use of this cliche),
and I’m still battling the same old demons. I will not turn this into a
depressing post though, even though my serotonin levels are dismally
low. It’s not chemically induced, mind, I just get depressed every 3
months or so, for no particular reason, and I have the misfortune of
having my quarterly depression fall on my birthday this year. However,
I shall turn this into a more upbeat post!

bday04 package

I received a package in the mail from my girlfriend, who is studying
in KL. I always tell people my birthday is on Ching Ming, but I have
neglected to account for the leap year factor. There’s 29 days in
February this year instead of the usual 28 days, which pushes my
birthday to one day after Ching Ming. This just happens once every four
years, on leap years, my birthday is always on Ching Ming otherwise. πŸ™‚

bday04 body shop
The package contains a gift-wrapped box from Body Shop.

bday04 soap
This is what the inside of the box has – a variety of soaps.

bday04 card
She also sent me a birthday card, and I was surprised when I opened it,
due to the (relatively) large portion of text. My girlfriend usually
writes “Dear xxx” on top and “Love xxx” at the end, and then does the
“” thing on the pre-printed birthday wishes. Heh.

Thanks Louisa! I won’t have to factor soap into my budget for a while. πŸ˜‰

bday04 parents
My parents also sent me this nifty birthday card that plays a birthday song, complete with flashing lights.

I had planned to go out and celebrate my birthday tonight with
friends, but I had to cancel it because I’m a little too depressed to
feel like going out. I’ll probably sleep at 5:30 pm or something. It’s
just another day anyway. *shrugs*

P/S – Excuse me for not replying the comments today. I will reply
all comments after my quarterly serotonin depletion passes. This one
should probably last one or two days max, you can “feel” (ie gauge) how
long the depression will last after you’ve been though several. The two
main factors in determining this for me is the intensity of depression
and the time needed for partial recovery (which can be measured by how
long it takes for you to feel slightly better). I’ve had monsters –
debilitating depressive episodes lasting for many weeks, but
thankfully, this is not one of them.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! πŸ™‚

Happy Valentine’s Day

valentine entreprenours

The photo above shows the enterprising people of Kuching setting up
stalls selling Valentine’s Day goods along the major roadsides to
remind forgetful people that today is V Day (and also serves a life
line of the tardy ones among us who waits till the last minute). It’s
along most of the city roads, there’s even cars stopping on roadsides
with speakers on full blast and the occupants selling flowers. It’s a
booming business, or so it seems. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, here’s ours:

For Her

hb present

It’s one of those gigantic cards. I put the present in it, since it fits. πŸ™‚

For Him

ll present

that’s a customized keychain with our names on it. πŸ™‚ This is not
the present though, it would be a little late due to Amazon orders, but
it’s “Good Chemistry: The Life and Legacy of Valium Inventor Leo
Sternbach” – the hardcover book that came out recently that I’ve really
wanted! Thanks! =D Happy Valentine’s Day and I love you, Louisa!

Here’s a alternate link for those of you who do not like the commercialism of Valentine’s Day:

Sucessfully bribing the nurse after failed doctor shopping [castitas.com]

Here at sixthseal.com, our aim is to cater for everyone. πŸ˜‰

castitas.com is still alive, I’ve decided not to let it go into
hibernation. I’ll post there under the “veritas” nick once in a while
and announce posts here, but only about legal things like
benzodiazepines.

anonymous: Thank you for the US$ 50 gift certificate!

us$50 amazon

I received this US$ 50 Amazon gift certificate and an e-card in the
mail today from an anonymous doner. The e-card did not provide any
details about who sent me this gift certificate too. This is a very
generous contribution and it’s very much appreciated! Thanks anonymous!
I’ll really like to know who sent me this though, so I could thank you
in person, but since you did not put any personal details at all,
perhaps you’ll like to remain anonymous and I can understand that. Do
contact me via email if you don’t mind though. Thanks again for the
generous gift!

Anyway, about sixthseal.com moving to the VPS, that would have to
wait a while due to a miscommunication between myself and the host,
resulting in my custom nameservers (ns1.fengtau.com and
ns2.fengtau.com) being delayed from being setup at the registrar level.
In other words, it might take up to 48 hours from now for my custom
nameservers to propogate fully, so I won’t be pointing sixthseal.com to
those records until two days from now. I will post before I change the
DNS records for the site. πŸ™‚

US$ 10 Amazon Gift Certificate

amazon10.jpg

I received a US$ 10 Amazon gift voucher from Brent, who runs The Weblog Review
[theweblogreview.com]. I’m not sure if I should be saying this since it
hasn’t been announced but it was supposed to be on Monday. *shrug*
Thanks Brent! I did not know about the contest until two days before it
closed and er…posted up a review that I did several days ago with a
link right on top. *cough* I figured that with the 1.3k visitors I get,
someone is bound to click on that link, and sure enough 42 people
clicked on the link when it was the first post.

I know, that’s not exactly ethical, but checks and balances were in
place – a reviewer cannot win first price (US$ 20), only second place
(US$ 10). I was told that I was actually the top referrer, but I write
for The Weblog Review and it was decided that it would be unfair for
others who does not have the liberty of posting up reviews to…well,
give hits a boost. I write once in a while, even though I committed to
one review per week, which reminds me…I need to write one tonight.

nasiayamdrum.jpg
Gotta have drums…

Anyway, I’ve been eating nothing since this breakfast I grabbed this
morning. There was a stall that always was in front of the workplace,
but they weren’t open during the puasa month until today. Which reminds
me, thanks to Taryn I now get to run around the office and take photos
of people doing (client’s name) work and send it daily to Catharine,
the Creative Director. Yeah I can’t talk about work stuff or post any
photos because of the NDA I signed and the confidentiality agreement. I
just took a couple today, the first batch, but again, only for internal
use.

I just got back from the office not long ago, wanted to finish up
some stuff and I had the energy and mental clarity (hey, from caffeine
ok) so I reckon I would finish it up before going home. Also, I
couldn’t seem to drag myself off the seat and the thing I’m working on
is rather compulsive on coffee…I just had to finish it off, or else
I’ll never leave it alone. πŸ˜‰ It’s like…hmm, you go down the list one
by one and you just have to finish everything, you can’t concentrate on
any other thing. Tweakers, you know what I’m talking about. Disclaimer:
That sentence should not be interpreted to mean that I myself ‘tweak’
in the classic sense as I was using that term for caffeine.

Thus, I won’t be sleeping tonight, there’s not much time left
anyway. I did get enough sleep yesterday, so yeah, will be up while I
write a review and maybe work getting another one of my “meth projects”
off the ground. Disclaimer: “Meth projects” is simply a metaphor for
the things I start (remember sixthseal.com mailbag? the autograph
project? and now this Black Kingdom chapter-a-day fiction) but don’t
finish, and is not an admission of any activities normally associated
with that term.

Well, more verbal diarrhea, it seems that there is some activity in
the search engine world (well, I only aim for Google) recently. I’m not
a hardcore SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) per se and it’ll be sad to see
the Malaysian blog scene start to care about PR (PageRank) and compete
for SERPs (Search Engine Results Page/Position). There are blogs out
that that will not link a lower PR site or one that has PR 0 or grey
barred because outbound links are essentially a ‘vote’ and will
contribute PR.

IMHO, that’s counter productive, especially in the blog scene. It
shouldn’t matter what PR a blog is, if you like it and read it daily,
then by all means link it. That’s what community is about…not linking
to get PR or to hog PR. Personally, I’ve never minded what PageRank a
page is before linking, everyone started with a low PR and get
“importance” from content or inbound links, which I like to call
“uplifting”. Read Davin Brin’s Uplift saga to get that.

Anyway, just in case you didn’t know, yeah I do a bit of SEO but
it’s mainly for SERPs. I’ve got a couple I’m proud of (particularly
this high ranking one in a high results (millions) keyword) and some I
don’t give two fucks about, and I’m glad to say that I dropped in the
latter but not the former. πŸ™‚ I don’t even know when Googlebot crawled
nor do I have time for these things now but on an interesting note:

http://www.sixthseal.com
is PR 6
http://www.sixthseal.com/
is PR 5
http://sixthseal.com/
is a mere PR 3

I’m thinking about using Apache redirects at the .htaccess level to
consolidate PR but I don’t know whether Googlebot likes that or not.
I’m pretty sure the PR 6 is just Google flux anyway and I’ll be back to
PR 5 again soon. I publicize the site as “sixthseal.com” which would
get the browser to display the 3rd URL. However, inbound links are
mostly using the 2nd method, which is what I use to link internal pages
too. I don’t see the logic behind a PR 6 for the URL without the /
though.

Enough Search Engines 101, basically, I was surprised to see a PR 6
on the URL without the trailing / and was interested to see metafilters
topping me using my link (not PPS) and was happy to see that the SERPs
I hold dear are still there. If anyone is wondering what keywords I
target, wonder no more, it should be pretty obvious. I won’t be stating
them here, since they’re all er…chemically related.

Anyway, if you just skimmed through all that, you might get the
impression that I’m making two different stances. I’m not, I just meant
I personally do some optimization (but not hardcore ones, don’t have
time for that) but that doesn’t mean I care about the PR of blogs I
link and I don’t think anyone else should either. It would be sad to
see the blogging scene degenerate to a “Will I gain PR?” link policy.

Okay, it’s 2 am so I should stop talking now. I’ll write a review
and then reply the comments and write the nasi ayam post if I have time
left tonight and write another chapter of Black Kingdom in the unlikely
event that there’s any time left after all that. I’ll be back again
after writing a review for TWR.

You know, I found that talking about SEO issues during Google Dance always lowers my PageRank. Heh.

Straight from Penang…

likki1.jpg

I just got Likki’s [blogspot.com] birthday present. Thanks Lik Chuen! I really appreciate that you took the time to make the card yourself. πŸ™‚

likki2.jpg

There’s also a letter and a LoTR ring inscribed with the elfin
script in the package. Looking at the handwritten letter, it strangely
reminds me of a pen-pal I used to have when I was in early secondary
school.

likki3.jpg

The package is actually dated 11/4 but I just got it today, even
though there’s no mail on Sunday. (?) Thanks again Lik Chuen, for your
present. πŸ™‚

Well, today was very rainy and cold so I spent most of the day
sleeping. I couldn’t help myself, when it’s dark outside at 3 pm I felt
so sleepy I crawled into bed and slept with the heater on. Heh. Dark +
rainy + cold = sleep. Well, I’ve got to finish up my tute exercises now
since I spent most of the day sleeping. It’s the weather I tell
you…making me all sleepy and lazy, but I love this kind of weather
anyway. Mmm…melancholic.

10th April, 2003

gf2002p.jpg

I just got the birthday present from my girlfriend today. πŸ™‚ It
takes ages for registered mail to get from Malaysia -> Melbourne,
don’t know why that is.

gf2002s.jpg

It’s a U2 black shirt. πŸ™‚ I think she remembers the U2 purple one
that was my favourite in 1999/2000. I don’t remember why, but I
developed some kind of weird attachment to that one and I was wearing
it every third day or something like that. Heh. I haven’t got a black
shirt so this one would fit into my wardrobe nicely. Thanks Louisa! πŸ™‚

[Edit: Here’s the picture of me in the shirt. :)]
