The perfect metaphor for gaining weight – The Rice Theory (TM)

my weight

I just weighted myself at a weighing scale and noticed that I am now clocking in at a rather  respectable (?) 69.2 kg.

me on scale

This is approximately a 10 kg increase from my previous weight (before rehab) and I had a friend relate to me how gaining 10 kg actually feels, but since it’s so subtle and nefarious you don’t actually realize it. It’s called The Rice Theory (TM).

turtle rice

The Rice Theory (TM) was related to me during dinner just now by my friend who watched me binge on food and then went with me to the mall for the weighing machine and it goes like this:

lugging rice

Pick up a 10 kg bag of rice from your nearest mall and try lugging that around. Imagine yourself carrying that 10 kg bag of rice. The. Entire. Day. Everywhere you go. 24/7. That’s how gaining 10 kg of weight feels like.

Jesus Christ, I need more exercise…

  1. Dude, you friend, the girl next door looks so sweet. When is she going to get all dolled up like those camwhoring celeb bloggers? Just once for the sake of sixthseal’s XX chromo post.

  2. I’ve read you since way before the rehab days and watched the videos of you smokin it up in your room – and you look like a different, better, healthier person now. 69kg is an ideal weight isn’t it? Of course, it depends whether you are fit or now and how much of that weight is fat vs muscle. Muscle is heavier than fat. Also, your body adapts to carrying 10kg of weight by being stronger.

  3. Hello HB – 10 kgs is absolutely nothing compared to the trials you have had to go through in rehab. I wish you the best and much rather read food posts than ‘Mirifallingoffthewagon’ posts. You are young and intelligent and your whole life is ahead of you – make the best of it; sound like your mum, right?? She is 100% right you know, so keep your family close at heart – all the best. 4. 10kg?…Don’t talk to me about 10kg!!! LOL!!!…You look fine lah! I think your girls would like a little bit of love handles. But you should maintain your present weight – hit the gym! Or stop hanging around the side of the pool…showing off in your speedos! Swim!!!! LOL!!!

  5. STP: Showing off his potbelly, that is. Hahaha!
HB, a lot of people will beat you up into a pulp if you say you are fat! STP will be the first (he sits on you and you’re a pulp) ;P

The Borneo International Marathon is this 12th October in Kota Kinabalu. πŸ™‚ I’m 20kg heavier than you are but I’ll be doing the 21km category. Then in December, I’ll be doing full 42km in Singapore.
    Come join me?

  7. e: My new dining companion who shall not be named. Haha! πŸ˜‰
You noticed that I never name some of the people I’m with? The last one was S who is a pharmacist in a private Kuching hospital. Hmm…I don’t know, I kinda like her looking like this.
aw: Cheers mate! Yeah, that was way back in 2003 and a particularly trying period of my life. Methamphetamine nearly derailed me then. I was probably about 50+ kg then, really skinny without any muscle tone, with bones showing and all that. Well, I should probably take up swimming again, which I will when my piercings heals up. Probably 2 months to be safe.
That’s interesting, the body adapt to carrying more weight by being stronger. Sounds very logical. πŸ™‚
frank_omatic: Well, I like the place. It has lots of interesting stuff. They have an outlet at The Spring in Kuching now too.
Eleanor: Hello Eleanor! Thanks for the support, I’m totally clean now and has ever been since Miri. Astute readers will probably attribute that to the different circle of friends I’ve been associating with since then, and they would probably be true. πŸ˜‰
Thanks again for reading, and I wish you all the best too. πŸ™‚
Irene: Yeah, imagine lugging around a 10 kg bag of rice everywhere, to the loo, while walking from your car, having a 10 kg bag of rice on you when you sleep etc. Horrifying, that metaphor. First time I heard about it too, which compelled me to blog about it. It really makes the fact sink in. πŸ™‚
MI!: I’m 171 cm, so my ideal weight should be probably lower than what it is right now. I don’t know, there’s this BMI calculator that states that I’m slightly overweight but most of the fat is concentrated around my potbelly and my face. Weight distribution problem. πŸ™‚
    suituapui: oops! My mistake. πŸ™‚
Yeah, I want to be swimming again but I have had a couple of piercings (non visible and not to be related on the blog until further notice) done and thus, I can’t swim in public pools (germs) until it heals properly. Haha! I do swim when I go swimming, I don’t hang around the sides. Just ask my colleage who bumped into me at Delta Pool. I was just doing constant laps and only talked to her when I’m done with the 3 km swim.
Clare: Someone at work commented that my face is kinda round and mused that it could be the reason I’m 27 and still single. πŸ˜‰
She was kidding of course, very nice girl that coworker.
clementwpy: I’m not really bothered, it’s just the metaphor my friend gave me that compelled me to share that. It really makes the fact hit home by giving you something to relate to. 10 kg bag of rice. Heh!
kennysia: Yeah, he told me. Offered cash incentives to boot. πŸ˜‰
I will be going to the KK marathon, I promised one of the organizers I will be doing the Borneo International Marathon.
    See ya there buddy! πŸ™‚

  9. nkwai: Yeah, I gained 15 kg actually when I got out of rehab. It is a lot. Hmm…I shall ask my friend and see if she has any good weight loss metaphors. Heh!

  10. HB, your previous post made me very depress. Sorry have to tell you I “hate” you once for that. Imagine if someone put the da di chai lei on ur balls and siao di di like that. When I was 8, I accidentally “killed” my beloved puppy, took me a long time to get over it.
Anyway, have fun in the marathon with Kenny. I am carrying a 20 kg rice on my body now. Geez… even heavier than you (I like that theory). Need to burn up all of them the next time before going home. *cold sweat*

  11. fish fish: It’s okay. I understand. πŸ™‚
Hey, someone mentioned that carrying all that excess weight actually makes you stronger. I will be running in the marathon and claim Eddie’s “incentive”. Haha!
Yeah, he’s the voice of reason over here. Made me see some sense. πŸ™‚

  12. You weigh 69kg? I thought you are lighter.. hmm, probably heavy balls, hehe! Then me not so bad, 72kg hahahaha! but I got spare tyre.. that’s the not so pretty side.

  13. bongkersz: Balls of steel, my friend, balls of steel. πŸ˜‰
Hey, I have a spare tyre too. I gotta get more exercise but then I just got my nipples pierced (both sides) so no swimming for 2 months due to the germs in the pool.

  14. Ugh! Painful?? How does it feel something tugging at your nipple all the time? πŸ˜› (My colleague just turned and looked at me with that blur face as I am grinning like mad writing this)
I just got my back needled so I stay away from pool as well πŸ˜‰ Er, not that I can swim that well really, nyahahahaha!

  15. bongkersz: Yeah, I saw your retouched tattoo. Nifty.
Well, nipple piercings don’t hurt all that much at all. I have photos and videos of it that I shall be posting up in 30 days (for reasons I shall explain later). It’s just clamp, and then a prick going through. It’s like getting pinched in the nipples. Oh wait, that’s not a very good analogy. It hurts less than being pinched in the nipples (if they twist it).
I’m used to it by now. I got it done in KL, it’s healing very well, and apart from it gettling tangled in my partner’s long hair the night before (ouch!) nothing much happened to it. One is vertical and the other horizontal and both are barbell piercings with a sharp tip. πŸ™‚

  16. Actually, I re-touched it again just recently. Sheesshh! Er, the thing become bigger and bigger! LOL!
“gettling tangled in my partner’s long hair the night before”
Ouch!! No man. Keep hair away from your nipple hahahahahaha!

  17. bongkersz: I have the clarify that the hair in question was the hair that grows on the crown of the head, not the hair in the pubic area. πŸ˜‰
    She has REALLY long hair.

  18. Of course my friend, for sure I couldn’t comprehend how or what kind of positions you were in to have your piercings to be entangled in pubic hair.. and I am not aware if pubic hair with such length exist πŸ˜€

  19. bongkersz: Hahaha! Jesus H. Christ, buddy, that is classic. I laughed so hard at your comment. πŸ™‚
