Give it to me from behind!

federal 1

Belakang mari! I was screwed in a very uncomfortable place (no, not in the back of a Volkswagen) while driving home on Federal Highway a couple of nights back. I was cruising along, minding my own business, when I saw this car on my ass, tailgating me like it’s going out of style.

I wasn’t in a hurry, so I switched lanes. I saw him tailgate another car and forgot about the entire thing coz I figured that was the end of it. Huge mistake…

This speed racer wannabe was stuck behind two slow moving cars so he swerved over to my lane. I was in the slow lane at that time so I was going at a leisurely 80km/h…too slow to accommodate for his (still accelerating) speed. I stepped on the gas to avoid being rear-ended by him. It was real pedal-to-the-metal stuff. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to believe in braking.

Nope, not him. Braking is not in his repertoire of moves. He drove straight up my ass and I felt the impact so I slowed down and pulled over to the emergency lane. I saw him slow down too so I got out of the car. This was Mistake #2.

The black car – it looked like a Civic or a similar build sedan – slowed, saw me get out of the car…and promptly sped off. I expected him to stop and his nefarious tactic of waiting for me to physically get out of the car before speeding off caught me by surprise. I didn’t even get his plate number.

I inspected my car and it wasn’t as bad as I thought, not even under direct sunlight the next day. Thus, I didn’t bother to lodge a police report. I took it to the workshop yesterday and the true extent of the damage was finally revealed to me when the mechanic showed me the boot compartment.

The boot wouldn’t close at all after the impact but I thought that was just due to the latch being broken. It was flapping around, making disconcerting noises like some flightless bird trying to take off but I didn’t think much of it.

I was surprised to see that the car actually drove INTO my boot, even going so far as to damage the spare tyre…in my BOOT! It’ll take me 3 days to get my car back. The bill?

RM 980

  1. ehhh I witness something like this earlier this year! I was driving back home with my fren in the car, so i drove leisurely slow.. and then when I saw red light about 200 m in front of me, i drove even slower. But this car, sped like 120km/h or something, and i thought he was gonna brake when it is near the red light, but instead he rammed in FOUR CARS!
btw HB! just launched a site selling handmade greeting cards! You might wanna have a look even if you’re not buying πŸ™‚

  2. I have had the exact same thing happen, I am not only going to install CCTV in the back, but on the front so I can catch their license plate when they leave. I tried to buy some small missiles, but America frowns on that sort of thing – we are only allowed to all carry automatic weapons.

  3. HB, I still not yet settle with my insurance claim of recent accident. My new car crossing down intersection on green light. A black honda came down fast on other side intersection without slowly down hit my left side.
He claim I drove on red light but it was he that speed by on red. His words against mine. He even called me to make me paid for doctor treatment. He ran out of car fast and fine that time.
My mother used worked for insurance told me let the claim agent deal with this person not me. that part of insurance job. He lied for more money.

  5. That sucks. I fucking hate car wrecks. Body work is so expensive too. I can’t believe you got it that cheap. That woulda been like 2,000$ min in the US.

  6. OIM….Only in Malaysia….where rude pricks will do shit like that. And then you have no recourse via the proper authorities. Malaysia is a country broken by years of corruption, lack of civic pride and rampant racism (this means you malays !)

  8. Dude, an illegal from Mexico did the same shit once, since I was driving a big SUV, his dinky Honda did not make it when he tried to escaped. He has no insurance so my replacement rear bumper came out of my own insurance . …Fucking Obama better NOT think about giving illegals driving previledges.

  10. mike aka foodcrazee: Yeah, but it sure hurt my wallet. πŸ™‚
Shirley Snow: True, getting rear-ended at high speeds makes your car jolt and it’s surprisingly hard to control for a while after that. Grr…
Marvin: I’ve seen those! It’s more like a reverse CCD camera which some cars have (e.g. Wish) but you can install it just about anywhere. Some people pry of the side mirrors and install it there but you’ll have to answer to JPJ if you get stopped. πŸ™‚
tcyp: I don’t even know what his license plate is. πŸ™‚
chefmel: Four cars! Damn, his insurance would skyrocket. πŸ™‚
    Hey, nice site! πŸ™‚
Braden Franklin: LOL! You can always install a roof mounted automatic weapon. Nail them! πŸ˜‰
cynthia: Yup, I’m fine. Thanks! I just have RM 980 less to spend in Sri Lanka. πŸ™
Money better spent on another trip for an accident that wasn’t even my fault. Sigh.
hindraf: I’m not sure actually. The lady boss saw me this morning as I was working to work and she waved and made small talk. I suspect I might have paid more than I should have. πŸ™‚
Vickie: Hmm…it should never be your word against him. The police can actually track the path and trajactory of both vehicles using a powder/liquid. If he ran a red light, he should be going faster than he would have from a stationary position.
cin: Thanks for the advice. It was at night and Federal Highway is pretty much populated at all hours so I’m not too worried. πŸ™‚
I like my car plate – I wanted QAG 4444 at first but I lost the bid for that number.
Mike: It’s considered expensive for Malaysian standards…it’s usually much cheaper, was expecting something closer to RM 500. πŸ™‚
jez: I could have filed a police report anyway, but it’s SUCH a hassle. I’m told depending on which part of Federal you’re on, you have to either lodge in the KL HQ or PJ HQ, both far from where I live. :S
annant: Yeah, the wallet more than anything. I could have gone on another backpacking trip with that money. πŸ™
bongkersz: Yeah, it’s apparently quite common here. The workshop people just nodded and said that happens all the time. People driving off after hitting someone.
e: Sorry to hear that buddy!
I thought an International License allows you to drive for 1 year in any country so it’ll be hard to put a stop to that…
ah loon: I can’t do anything anyway, it was on a highway so the moment I got out of my car, he can safely speed away without any chance of me catching up…
Tian Chad: Heh! Oh well, I guess I was just unlucky. It could have been worse if I didn’t accelerate when he was on my tail. I wonder if he doesn’t have brakes. :S
eiling: Yup, that’s what I did! I drove faster to let him pass since the other two lanes were slow moving. He still hit me. Grr…
Anyway, I’m a tailgater too but I’m trying to correct that now. I know it’s a bad habit. πŸ™‚
KY: Yeah, I wouldn’t mind if accidents were my fault e.g. when I masuk longkang. However, this irks me coz he could have just stopped and exchange insurance information and it’ll be good for both of us. His car was damaged too.
hitomi: It’s hard for me to remember numbers…I’m better with letters. Let’s hope the Malaysian government implements vanity plates. It would be hard to forget a licence plate called RACER. πŸ˜‰

  12. superwilson: My car plate is QAG 4114. The last time it came out is 2001 I think. πŸ™‚
Yeah, I think so too, either expired road tax, drunk driver, or stolen vehicle. No one in their right mind would cabut when you can claim from insurance.
hitomi: No la…vanity plates usually has limited. No profanity or racist tags. πŸ™‚
ShaolinTiger: Sorry to hear that, I hate people rear-ending me too. :S
DemonD: Cheers bro! Yah, I’m letting it go, can’t be helped anyway. Idiots on the road all the time. πŸ™‚
WEEN: Yeah, there’s a lot over here in Malaysia, I’m sorry to say.

  13. ouch! man your car has gone through so much pain. I had a close call today, the neanderthal driving a 4×4 almost ram into my car. When he saw me closing already and he just suddenly sped out of the junction, thank God there wasn’t any car on the left lane and I was able move into the lane avoiding that bastard.

  14. crappy booze: Yeah, I was damn surprised coz my bumper isn’t really that badly damaged from above. He came from below. Now I’m wondering if it’s a Civic after all coz it has to be real low to run into me like that. Hmm…
Darren: I know! Masuk longkang la, running into lampposts la, at least not as unlucky as my previous ride. I actually ran down a PERSON at a PEDESTRIAN CROSSING while running a RED LIGHT in Kuching. Jesus H. Christ. πŸ™
