Fat Mum

fat mum

Fat Mum Coffee Shop is practically an institution in Sibu. It caters primarily to people from the clubbing scene wanting to get some grub in their stomach before they head home for the night. They close relatively early compared to the other establishments like the one below Today Hotel (5-6 am) but it’s a great place to eat what you would dub dai chow in KL in the wee hours of the night.

This place is strictly for those who observe the closing hours of nightspots. Fat Mum’s kitchen closes at 1:30 am while the others stay open till 5 am. I think their rationale is to attract the ethanol brothers instead of the chemical brothers – the latter being more apt to party late and be rowdy.

It has a simple kitchen setup and while the food isn’t anything to write home about, it does the job. You head to Fat Mum coz you want to soak up the alcohol you’ve consumed with rice and dishes, not coz you’re up for some fine dining at 1 am in the morning.

Meet the owner!

Fat Mum was still very packed at 2 am, perhaps they made an exception for CNY since I don’t remember them opening this late last time.

fat mum dinner

The best thing about Fat Mum is that like all other dai chow places, you can STILL drink while eating supper. It also features Sibu prices, dinner for four inclusive of beer is only RM 62. Heh!

  1. You know what I love about going back to my mom’s hometown? That everything is ridiculously inexpensive. Yesterday, a dinner involving 13 guests ended up with a bill of only RM 130 something.
Even cheaper than eating economy rice in KL because the dinner involved a huge cod fish.

  2. Michelle Chin: Yup, food is much cheaper than KL in my hometown too! Dinner for two with beer, 3-4 dishes and rice just costs RM 30 or less. I usually drink 3 cans over dinner. The beer at coffeeshops in Sibu is all…er, how should we put it – tax free, so it’s sold much cheaper than what supermarkets can offer. πŸ™‚
KY: Yup, and that’s not all the dishes, soime people ordered fried noodles too. RM 62 inclusive of 4 beers. πŸ™‚
Erica: The price is awesome coz food is quite cheap in Sibu unlike the dai chow over here (but admittedly, some places here are really cheap too). The trick is in the beer – triads control all the smuggled beer, and all the food outlets have to buy it from them. They sell it MUCH cheaper than what even wholesalers can offer so every place carries it. πŸ™‚

  3. I used to go there quite often. The food is quite ok… Once I brought an ex-classmate there – my same shape and size…and she said, “Are you trying to insult me?” Hahahahaha!!!! What a name! Fat Mum!

  4. Is the owner called Fat Mum. He much be a gay dude, ha ha ha. Looks like a good overall eating place, opens late and serves beer.
I was surpriced to see the kitchen, it’s the first proper commercial kicthen I have seen. It’s got wok burners and a pass. Even Gordan Ramsey would be proud.
The more imporant question is, who is the girl in the red shirt?

  5. suituapui: Hahaha! That’s a funny story. People just call it “fei ma” in Mandarin and Foochow for some reason. It’s been around for quite a while eh? I remember it being there 10 years ago.
The food is okay, I like it too, but it closes quite early compared to the other ones (the two shops a little way down) and the one below Today hotel which is still open at 5 am. πŸ™‚
rocket: Haha! It’s just a name, probably taken to signify that a fat mum is a good cook and thus good food. I don’t know how the rationale works too but yeah, we have a lot of wierd coffee shop names anyway.
Hmm…all coffee shops in Sibu has almost similar setups though.
The girl in the red shirt? I don’t know, she was waiting for the toilet. I was out with my bros. πŸ™‚

  6. fish fish: Yeah, Sibu and JB are two triad strongholds in Malaysia. It’s a combination of lax law enforcement a.k.a. corruption and I’m sure you know that some politicians have links to the triads too. Smuggling is very lucrative, especially beer. πŸ™‚

  7. rocket: Hmm…it depends on what you want to eat. I’ll say Kuching has more variety. Sibu has kampua mee but Kuching has kolo mee so it’s really hard to tell.
Yeah, Kuching is fast growing so it’s getting expensive. πŸ™‚
eiling: Yeah, that’s the norm over in Sibu coz there’s no mamaks in Sibu. πŸ™‚
We eat dai chow before going back home. Haha!

  8. M-Knight: Hey, didn’t catch you in Sibu. I was out every single night getting smashed, was in all the nightspots in town, and house parties too. I like Fat Mum but the one below Today hotel has great kung pow pig head. πŸ™‚
clement: Yup, the prices are really cheap for the quality…another popular place in Sibu is at the wet market on the second floor.
It’s only for pre-clubbing though – dinner for people to line their stomach before they head out. Extremally cheap eats there. πŸ™‚

  9. I didn’t catch u also…:) I was too tired to go out to any night spot after a long day of visiting relatives and friends from day 1 to 4 only to relax at home during the night.

Happy CNY HB. Catching up on your older post.

  11. ah nel: Yeah, it is fun but I prefer staying in KL. Sibu can be very stiffling at times. πŸ™‚
Charles: Yup, all the best spots post clubbing are located in a straight line from Fat Mum in Lanang over Sibu Gateway to Today hotel. πŸ™‚
M-Knight: I went only to relatives and closer friends for CNY visiting…was back only for a short time and Day 3 was taken up by weddings. I was a zombie by the last night despite sleeping the usual amount due to the late nights. πŸ™‚
Cheers: Haha! It’s the name of the coffee shop. πŸ™‚
    Happy CNY mate! πŸ™‚

Not that I know from personal experience, just from what I hear. *cough*
    ahlost: NO STOCK! T_T
I didn’t get to eat midin at all when I went back to Sibu. Everywhere I tried to order, they said no stock coz no one went to pick the wild ferns during CNY. πŸ™
    Haha! Yeah that’s mine. πŸ™‚
Michelle: It’s not tax free, it’s “tax free”. πŸ˜‰
    There’s a huge difference. Haha!
Sibu is a triad stronghold and they do all sorts of operations e.g. eggs (again), and smuggled liquor and beer. Actually Sibu supplies the other places like Kuching coz I know people who do Sibu -> Kuching runs. They earn RM 1,500 per trip, the lorry is full of smuggled beer. πŸ™‚

  13. I go to this place almost every week cos my husband loves the food (and also the reasonable price there). I read this blog last noon and happened to go to Fat Mum last night. I told the boss that his pic was on blogspot and he got excited about it and asked for the url. I gave “sixthseal.com” to him. He also mentioned Eddy was his ex-school mates.

  14. Portia: Yeah, it’s a great place to eat after drinking and the prices are very reasonable! πŸ™‚
Yeah, Eddy knows the owner of the place.
Thanks! Glad to hear that he likes it.
You’re from Sibu? (stating the obvious)
    Pleasure to meet you! πŸ™‚

  15. Tim: Eh, you’re from Sibu and you haven’t heard of Fat Mum? It’s at Lanang Road (kinda, sorta). Drive down from Lanang heading towards Sibu Gateway, it’s very close to Sibu Gateway, diagonally opposite from the Catholic church and high school. πŸ™‚
