Pork & Prawn Salsa Burritos with Century Egg + Cheddar Cheese

I’ll call it Surf and Turf Burritos except it doesn’t exactly qualify as such. Heh. I made this for our anniversary – it’s a bit of an eccentric mix between East and West, and it sounds like fusion gone completely wrong but for some reason it works! πŸ™‚

You will need:

  • Plain flour tortillas
  • Prawns (shrimp – and lots of it)
  • Pork (minced)
  • Newman’s Own Medium Chunky Salsa
  • Duck century egg
  • Aged cheddar cheese
  • Iceberg lettuce

We got the Jamie Oliver Pink Himalayan Salt and Tellicherry Black Pepper on sale. It was something like RM 7.99 each from Meatworks, which makes it a pretty good deal. I used it to season the pork and prawns.

I actually wanted to make crispy tacos for our anniversary but went with fajitas (burritos to be more concise, it doesn’t have grilled meat and it’s wrapped) instead – our brand of choice is Mexican Discovery Plain Flour Tortillas.

I first pan fried the minced pork with a bit of olive oil and added Β½ of a 1.5 kg bag of defrosted peeled prawns into the mix before adding in the salt and pepper.

The salsa was added into the mix at this point instead of during the wrapping process. I figured the prawns and pork could do with a bit of taste. I simmered the concoction on low heat until it reduced to just a bit of sauce.

Next, I diced duck century eggs (there are chicken and quail versions nowadays too but I like tradition) and cheddar cheese into bite-sized chunks…

…and went all ninja on the iceberg lettuce. smirk

The tortilla wraps were heated for a few seconds on a frying pan (that’s why we used Mexican Discovery, it has a higher moisture content and can be subjected to this) before being used as a base to wrap all the ingredients.

I scooped in the hot pork and prawns salsa mix before adding sliced iceberg lettuce, century eggs and cheddar cheese. The entire tortilla is wrapped up burrito style.

The trick to doing this well is to not over-fill the tortilla wraps.

My love came with dessert – a double slice of cake, which we ate with a 1.5 pint tub of Berkeley Farms Moose Track ice cream. The ice cream is loaded with peanut butter cups (kinda like Reese’s Pieces) and fudge and I originally thought this Californian ice cream was pretty crappy but changed my mind after eating it a second time.

It’s a good desert to finish everything off!

I think it has become somewhat of a tradition for me to cook during our anniversary and I’m glad I managed to do it this time too. I’m lucky to have you dear! *hugs*

The pork and prawn fajitas may sound a bit weird but it goes well together. Try out the duck century egg and cheese combo – they both have that umami taste to it, and I’ve finished the rest of the tortilla wraps with that and a bit of lettuce and honey glazed ham. πŸ™‚

      I love making sandwiches, and although not a sandwich per se, I read that tortilla wraps is now the #2 selling item behind sliced bread (bagels and muffins are #3 and #4) which is quite surprising.

      The figures are US sales though.

      Berkeley Farms ain’t too bad too – it’s a semi-budget ice cream (relatively speaking, it’s not as cheap as local brands obviously but about RM 10 or so cheaper than Ben & Jerry, Mars from France ice cream etc).

      I initially didn’t quite like it but it’s actually pretty good. Love the peanut butter cups.

      Ham and cheese works well too, that’s how I finished the wraps – with cold cuts…and century eggs! πŸ˜€

  2. HB, great meal. Now with leftover tortilas I most use it for breakfast burrito with sausage or bacon and ham and eggs. Cheese of swiss or cheddar is good on it too. I sometime grill the burrito to melt the cheese in it. In Taiwan they make a ice cream wrap with thin sheet and ice cream with ground peanut in it.

      I’ll love to do a wrap with ice cream inside too but first I gotta bizarre idea for a breakfast burrito – Continental style, with everything inside and I also wanna make one to simulate the old days where they make a sub with the main and dessert and is eaten in order e.g. one side to the other.

      It’s pretty delicious stuff! The aged cheddar goes well with the duck century egg and the salsa pork and prawns.

      I think adding some guacamole and putting the salsa last would do wonders too!

  4. Pork & Prawn Salsa Burritos itself sounds super delish already, but with Century Egg + Cheddar Cheese.. UGH… This kind of fusion is soooo rare, but im sure they’ll taste very good!!! Ahh.. all my fave ingredients!!

    • Yup! I believe all burritos/tortillas should have salsa or beans or guacamole (if you like the latter). πŸ™‚

      They’re all my favorite ingredients too! I love century eggs, have loved it since I was a kid!

      I can eat it with anything which is probably why it tastes so good to me. I made a more regular version for my love.

      I’ll eat it any way (except by itself – coz it tastes too strong to be eaten by itself).

      This combination was surprisingly good coz I usually eat century eggs with rice so I was quite surprised that it goes well with cheese and prawn + pork salsa.

      Yup, it’s surprisingly good. I thought aged cheddar and century egg would not go well together and so did Ling but when I made it, it turned out to be good. I ate all of mine like that.

      I made most of hers with just the pork & prawn salsa and a bit of Kewpie sauce. πŸ˜€

  6. Looks like a delicious meal. Can’t help but feel that century egg sounds horribly out of place but I am still curious how everything tastes like together.

      You can get Mexican salsa (although most are not made in Mehico per se but rather US of A) in most “higher end” import supermarkets e.g. Jaya Grocer, Big Independent Grocer etc.

      We got ours from Jaya Grocer but most places will carry it – check out the condiments area, or sometimes they’ll put it where the hard taco shells are or where the tortilla chips (snacks) are.

      However, it’s really quite good – aged cheddar and century eggs go surprisingly well with this cooked pork + prawn salsa burrito.
