My mom just died

last office

My mom has passed on peacefully at Changi Hospital Isolation Ward 2 at 2:14 pm Singapore time just now. It’s a blessing that all of us were with her when she took her last breath. I’ve been in Singapore for a couple of days now and there’s a lot of procedures involving embalming and death certificates and what not over here.

I just came back from the hospital, she has been struggling a lot with the pain last night and it was heartbreaking to see the blight that end stage cancer brings.

My mom has been real strong though, she has been fighting lung cancer since 2010 when she went for the initial operation in Auckland.

entombing service

We will all be flying back to Sibu with my mom’s body on Saturday night – if anyone wants to pay their last respects, the coffin will be at our home in Sibu for at least one (1) day before funeral proceedings on Monday.

The Christian service will be tomorrow morning at Singapore.

Thank you all for your well wishes and condolences.

You’ll be sorely missed by all of us, mom. I know you’re in a better place now.

  2. HB, your mom was strong and brave woman. Now she at peace in heaven. My dad passed away at work and did not know it also. He was 50 year old and my youngest sister was 12 could understand it for a long time. Your mom get to Ling and see her grandchildren before she passed. They say in afterlife no more suffering and at peace.

    • Missed your mum’s wit and way she delivered jokes in mandarin with her rosy cheeks and rolling big eyes. We have such good times at Sibu coffee shops whenever we met.
She made history by scoring 3As in STPM in Arts stream in Sibu.  Common to have 4 As in Science subjects.
Even in University holiday time, she studied non-stop and slept few hours. l woke up middle of the night to find her studying standing up so that she won’t fall asleep.
She condensed her study notes from many pages many times over and over to few pages. Coupled with the fact that she can write very very fast and hence always on Dean’s list.
She has fantastic memory. Fact that she can know most of her students by names is an asset as Senior Assistance of Sacred Heart Boys’ School.
Her medical knowledge and terminology is amazing by picking up from your sister.
She was so overwhelmed with joy and excitement by showing me her first grand daughter’s photos and telling me about her successful operation. She looked fantastic with rosy cheeks. That was the last time we met.
Then l sensed that something is wrong when she didn’t like to email or chat over phone as time passed by.  News from your blog is getting worst and worst.   Consolation is she was surrounded by love ones and given the best medical care, and enjoying her grand children in last few years.
Missed her dearly on how she boasted about her low pulse rate as she went jogging often. And when her knees are painful, she changed to swimming. She is always resourceful, resilient and very determine.
And she can sing very well. At our class reunion in 2009, she rushed home to photocopy lyrics of the songs so we can all sing together with her on stage: “Those Were The Days”.
Huai Bin, please take care of your Dad and grandma.
Aunty Siew Lian @ Dunedin (we were same table at your sister’s wedding reception in KL in 2008)

Pray that His comfort will be with you and your family during this difficult time and we look forward to the day where there will be a great gathering of the saints (including your mum) with Jesus when He returns.
    Take care.

i am auntie Lu, your mum’s classmate, we were togther in Chung Hua form 4 and 5.
Your mum was ‘头名哥’ in class, always diligently studying.. she was never proud or selfishly hoarding her knowledge. In fact she was our helpful walking dictionary
she was fun loving too, sharing jokes readily.
thank you, Koh Hung, you had added delightful colors in our class!

  7. My deepest condolences to your dad and family members, to your mum’s family. Although I am from Sibu I only got to know your mum when she came to Third College,MU as a resident. We became friends together with her room mate Annette Yip. Both of us are very much saddened by the early demise of such a good and kind person. But both of us know that she is now in a painless environment with angels and our Loving Father in Heaven.
    God bless.

  14. Thanks for the condolences everyone!

From the messages of support to the wreaths, to the food, to the comments and texts you left, it’s all very much appreciated during this difficult time.

Apologies for taking so long to get back, we had a lot of stuff to deal with after her death since she died in a Singapore hospital and she’s Malaysian, although she holds a long stay visa.
