The humble Claypot Chicken Rice is something which I’ve actively hunted whenever I get a hankering for it (and even when I don’t). I remember having a family vacation when I was 7 years old, with my dad bringing me to Petaling Street and telling me that the claypot chicken rice over here in KL is good and “different” from what we get back home.
I don’t know why but that memory has always stayed with me. I’ve actively sought out this…er, nostalgia tinged delicacy since then. I was told that there’s a stall at Ming Tien food court that dishes out pretty good Claypot Chicken Rice so off I went with Jan to check it out.
The stall sells Claypot Chicken Rice (RM 5) and Claypot Pork Rice (RM 5.50) so if you have any illusions about it being halal, leave them at the door (or the arch rather). It’s pork. π
I ordered the Claypot Chicken Rice since the Claypot Pork Rice didn’t look that appealing from the photo, but rest assured, I’m going to check it out some other time. You’re gonna see a lot more of Ming Tien posts coz it’s near my condo and I like how they open till late. π
It tastes pretty good, but it’s not the best I’ve had. The Claypot Chicken Rice was flavorful enough and came with the classic, sinful Crust of Charcoal Rice (TM) beneath. This is the best part of the dish, you scrape it into the pot to mix it around but if you’re a crust aficionado, you can opt to leave it longer so the crust will procreate into a veritable swarm of Crust Goodness (TM) from the residual heat from the claypot.
I don’t make any sense, do I?
I’ll tell you something though…what the cook lacks in skillz, he more than makes up for with pure enthusiasm. π
:S havent tried the claypot before but the sharks fin noodle soup didnt taste very good the last time…you should try the fried mushrooms stall and the sarawak noodles(i don’t know why i like it) their the bomb!
there’s one claypot chicken rice that my aunt ALWAYS brings me to in somewhere of seapark…cant remember in which kopitiam already… :S
and my mami lurves da crust so muchy. that’s da only charred thing that she eats…
HB, I heard of claypot chicken rice but it different here in San Francisco. Sometime called rice casarole at some places. Your look pretty good. Going to find a recipe for it now.
Ewen: Okay, next thing to try at Ming Tien! I’ll be going often since it’s just so close. π
annant: SEA Park? That’s close to where I am too…hmm ask her and lemme see if I can find it. Cheers! π
Erica: Yup, it tastes pretty good too – the best thing is the charcoal crust at the bottom from the heat radiating from the claypot. π
Forcing the girl to feed you and then repent by feeding her back?! haha…
you should try the one at damansara jaya near Atria π
there’s one somewhere in cheras, if not mistaken in u-lake area, has a nice one too π frankly, to me claypot rice is quite common and almost everywhere serves good ones π
KY, you mean Busy Corner next to the Petronas? I agree, that Claypot Chicken Rice there is so much better than the one in Ming Tien.
KY: If you’re talking about the claypot chicken rice in DJ beside the carpark near Atria, it moved to a shop. Can’t recall what it’s called. But I think it’s same row as Domino’s.
That one isn’t that great, you really gotta try the Claypot Prawn Rice at Busy Corner in DU.
Ya bro, i agree with KY and wen, try the one near Atria. Best I’ve ever tasted!
But I’ve yet to try Busy Corner, but a few of my friends said that the one near Atria is better!
the chinaman calls it claypok chi-khen lice….
Claypot Chicken Rice is one of my nostalgic- childhood food too! Hahah, my dad brought me to this place in Jalan Alor when I was in primary school. It was really good and ever since then I went there every time I’m in KL with my family. There’s a lot of good stuff to try in Jalan Alor! Havent been there for years.
eiling: Haha! No la, just posing for the camera. π
KY: Okay, I will try and find it! π
BTW, I think the nasi lemak place closed down, couldn’t find it at all.
kohping: Cheras! I’m scared, I get very lost in Cheras. :p
Naoko: Okay, let’s go someday! π
wen: I’ve gotta find this Atria place. π
ShaolinTiger: Claypot PRAWN Rice? I’m drooling already mate. π
I’ve never had claypot prawn rice before.
Marlboro Guy: Okay, I’ll try both and post about it. π
DYMM_Tuanku: Haha! Chicken lice indeed. π
chefmel: Oh ya, I love Jalan Alor too…it’s changed a lot though, nowdays it seems “controlled” by coffee shops/restaurants who provides the seating (and drinks) while the stalls are still there. A bit too touristy now. π
I love to eat Claypot Chicken Rice and always when I ordered, it tastes not good.. π
Shirley Snow: Hmm…perhaps you should leave it in longer. The charcoal crust is what makes it taste good. π
the best claypot chicken rice in restoran sorn in paramount garden, a stone’s throw from seapark. located directly behind o&s restaurant – which, by the way, has the best assam laksa, curry laksa, prawn mee, curry chicken chee cheong fun and char kway teow! this claypot chicken rice stall is open evenings only. bon apetit!
christina: Thanks for the tip! I know that place. That is really close to where I work – will check it out after work one day. Cheers! π
